To drink two bottles of red wine on my own at the weekend?

Rocktheboat73 · 30/07/2014 00:06

I drink three large glasses on a Friday, from 6pm - 11pm. Then another three on a Saturday again between 6-11pm. Then the remainder - around 2 glasses on a Sunday night. I don't drink alcohol Monday - Thursday and I class myself as a pretty healthy fit person. Am I unreasonable to drink this amount by myself?

Binge drinking is drinking more than 6 units (for women) in a short space of time.

2 bottles over 3 days is on the heavy side but not terrible.

I'd try cutting it down to one bottle over 2 days instead.

I am always amazed by how virtually teetotal Mumsnet is.

Me too - I always feel like a raging alcoholic! I drink alcohol once a week (maximum), but on that night I will have either a bottle of wine or around 8 spirits, and occasionally more. I genuinely don't think it's that much and I'm never lying in my pit of a morning screaming for alka seltzer but often on here I think I'm a bit of an Ollie Reed.

squoosh · 30/07/2014 14:30

I drink two bottles of wine most weekends. I enjoy it and have no plans to change.

externalwallinsulation · 30/07/2014 14:45

obfusKate Not everyone is as lovely about the difference as you are, though. Often the attitude is sanctimonious: 'You must get help, you clearly have a problem'. I don't have a problem. I like a drink, and I like being drunk occasionally (the two are different pleasures). In the latter case, I like the numbness, I like the speed at which things move, I like being out with my friends who are all exactly the same, drinking cocktails and laughing til we cry at stupid stuff. I stay off it five nights a week because I need to function in a very precise and demanding job, but I also get a great deal of pleasure and enjoyment from LETTING GO!

I do have a caffeine problem, though. I am a functional caffeine addict. I can't manage without at least 2 cups first thing. :)

Part of it's down to the fact that this is a female-dominated site, and most women have been socialized to feel guilty abouteverything and aware that hedonism and fun are for men, not women. Even if you don't believe that consciously, it has an effect on you.

Davsmum · 30/07/2014 14:52

You cannot use ml as a guideline because some wines have more alcohol in them than others. You can drink more millilitres of a 12% than a 14% wine. By putting how many units there are in each bottle you get a better guideline.
Some bottles say 7 or 9 units and some say 10 depending on how much alcohol is in there.
I don't think 2 bottles over 3 nights is too bad but it is probably better to have a day free of alcohol in between.
Binge drinking is not good.
Having said all that - I have on odd occasions had a bottle and a half in one night!

I think it's fine but it's a lot less than I drink Blush

DomesticSlobbess · 30/07/2014 15:02

I agree with ObfusKate, to me that sounds a lot OP but I feel that on MN, the majority like a few drinks at the weekends.

I only drink a few times a year on a night out. And twice this year I've had a couple glasses of wine at barbecues. But on a week-to-week basis, I don't drink. I don't see the point in sitting at home with a bottle of wine when I'm happy enough with a soft drink. Sure I won't get that tipsy feel

DomesticSlobbess · 30/07/2014 15:04

Oops. Tipsy feeling but I would rather have that feeling on a night out in a social setting than just at home.

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 30/07/2014 15:11

I drink about three bottles a week. I have a couple of glasses most nights, and a bit more at the weekend.

eyebags63 · 30/07/2014 15:13

YABU, too much in too short a time frame IMO. I don't understand why being blasted on wine is so socially acceptable these days.

Happydaysatlastforthebody · 30/07/2014 18:07

Each to their own.op that's a hell of a lot less than some if my friends drink.

I don't usually drink sun/mon/thurs but enjoy a glass/bottle of I feel like it when I feel like it.

Some people are vile after one glass or can't function so shouldn't at all. Others are find. Everyone is different.

The only sure thing in life is we are all going to die so personally Iike to enjoy the time I have here so if I want a glass/pudding/pair of shoes and we can afford it then I do.

I wonder how many women pushed away the dessert trolly on the titanic. Live and enjoy.

Really? I'm always surprised at how much alcohol is drunk, both on here and in RL.

grocklebox · 30/07/2014 18:18

Sounds fine to me, I drink more than that.

What I want to know is why I'm supposed to only have 14 units and himself is allowed 21, a whole third more than me? We are the same height, I weigh slightly more than him, I'm younger and probably healthier.
Why does having a penis mean he can drink a third more alcohol than me?
Not that either of us stick to the limits anyway, but still.

YANBU

I drink a bottle both Friday and Saturday night sometimes an extra glass too
I also have one bottle, one night during the week as well (usually tonight...whoop!)

Absolutely fine and normal in my world.

"Well that is 15 units. Recommended is 11 units per week for women,"

When did that change? It used to be 14 units.

I read that the average bottle of wine is 9 units, so two bottles is 18 units. It is a little over the recommended units, but not something I would be unduly worried about. When OH is away I make one bottle last over three days, but I have a lower tolerance to alcohol.

SpeedofSound0 · 30/07/2014 18:48

Yes, you are a borderline alcoholic. Grin

That was a joke. However, government guidlines busybodies would probably state that you are drinking over the recommended amount.

If you are happy with what you consume, then that is nobody's business but yours. Unless of course you still feel under the influence and drive a car the following morning or something.

I don't drink alcohol personally, but I also don't believe in lecturing other people about their drinking habits.

SirChenjin · 30/07/2014 19:08

Not really - if the amount that you're consuming is causing you to use the NHS more than average, or your behaviour is taking up police time, or your anti-social behaviour, or anything else that impinges on resources, then it's the business of the Govt.

hettie · 30/07/2014 19:12

Think there ate 2_different things about whether this is OK. Is it ok in health terms and is it OK in problematic drinking terms. Healthy living... It seems the advice is less, but it's all relative risk factor, how long and healthily you live also depends on a myriad of other factors. Of you want to live a long life, we all know what the advice is but very few follow all of it. Problem drinking wise it sounds fine... But only you can know this

nostress · 30/07/2014 19:40

I do that too! Well usually a bottle on friday and maybe saturday too. Just been on holiday and drank every day. Dont drink monday-thursday. Binge drinker yes but I couldnt care less- I could be run over tomorrow.

Its much worse to drink everyday (even small amounts) and never have days off as your liver doesnt have chance to recover.
