To not have a clue how to sew name tags on dd's uniform

Dd1 is starting YR in September and I want to use sew on labels rather than iron on ones as I've had issues with those at nursery previously.

I know I am a daft cow but I haven't got a clue how to sew these buggers on .

Do I need a sewing machine? Are there any online tutorials? Is it going to take ages?

I am not always so hopeless

just sew round the edges with small stiches. alternatively write on the clothes with a laundry pen

You can use a needle and thread. Do you have a sharp needle and black sewing thread? I would use running stitch.

I've got an Attach-a-tag

It attaches a little plastic black tag, that is printed with your name on, to the washing instructions (if that makes sense)

I love it!!, three children and it takes about 15/20 minutes

You need a sharpie black marker, just write on the tags, saves hours

Are you sure you want to sew them?! I don't like the iron on ones either but I've been using clip on ones for my dd. Check out the name label company.

Oh and at the end of the year you can take the tags off the old uniform and reuse them on the new one!!!!

Or buy sticky labels? They are great, very resistant, will survive years of machine washing and drying.

I write their name on with a sharpie laundry pen. Hasn't failed me yet!

Get some Stickins. I spent years sewing on name tags, I wish I'd found these fabulous things years ago!

Oh just write your surname on the label with black marker.

You can hand that down to siblings then.

Parents pull the labels off to use for their own kids ie steal.

I sew on tags for the logo stuff. So much easier for teaching staff to read, doesn't wash out etc. But nothing neat for me. Needle and thread. Line the tag up on a seam or neck part of a jumper where there's a double layer of material. Do the ends of the label only. I just stick the needle through one layer of material so you can't see the stitching.

Also people less likely to "forget" to give back an item of clothing that for mixed up if it had another child's name in it, in indelible ink!

Sewing makes it easy for other parents to unpick and relabel.

I pay for the names to be sew under the school logo. It fail proof of getting jumpers/cardi back.

ideally you would borrow the white board marker pens they use in school as they never wash out without a lot of hassle and good fortune.

I like the button tag idea a lot but dd and teachers should be able to read the name quickly and easily without having to look for it so not sure if the tag is to small...

I looked at "my name tag" and love the idea to just stick'em on. However some of the uniform items don't have a standard washing instructions tag and I gather that the stickers won't work on the actual garment. [clueless emoticon] also there is so much 'design choice' that I get overwhelmed and can't decide....

I use iron on and sew on name tapes and iron on transfers.

Sewing machine for name tapes is daft and a whole lot of faff.

iirc buy via MN and you get a discount.

I use the iron in ones from Easy2name and use the MN discount for school uniform. They go on the back at the top for shirts and jumpers, and in one of the front pockets for shorts or trousers. They easily last for a long as the clothes fit. The name stickers are good for lunch boxes, drinks bottles, shoes etc. too.

I also have sew in name tapes for longer lasting things like towels and flannels for cub camps and rugby training. I have put 'ds1's name Surname, ds2's name' on those tapes so they'll do for either of them depending which end I turn over before I sew them in.

I use a hemming stitch, it's very quick. It really doesn't matter how beautiful your sewing is.

Mind you, I still treasure the memory of when I had to embroider dd's name on some piece of uniform. I really cursed at the time, but I felt like I'd received a medal when dd told me that she'd been asked to stand up and demonstrate for the benefit of her classmates' mothers what it was meant to look like. Mind you, I bet all the other mums hated me
