I,m with you op. Make up and smearing your hair with conditioner etc comes off in thepool so I might swallow it, or clogs up the filters so they have to close the poolg

EpitomeOfFrump · 28/07/2014 14:47

I do not remove make up when I go swimming but after working outdoors for years my favoured brands are waterproof stuff anyway. I swim with face above water as well.

achtunglady · 28/07/2014 14:51

Well I have to smother my hair in leave in conditioner before swimming to avoid spending 30mins after brushing all the tangle and knots out with tears in my eyes.

I do remove my make up when I remember, but I'm not particularly bothered if I forget to. And I'm a messy, face in the water kinda swimmer!

BolshierAyraStark · 28/07/2014 14:55

I never bother to remove make up before I go swimming.

specialsubject · 28/07/2014 14:56

I also hate stinkers in a pool - civet cat's bottom and fake coconut being particularly disgusting.

Deverethemuzzler · 28/07/2014 15:08

Oh please. Make up clogging the pool filter? Hmm

hilly if I was your sister, your constant 'advice' would make me want to wear more makeup.

Make up is not 'bad' for your skin. It can protect your skin from sun damage and pollution.

Make up doesn't cause acne. Total myth. She should wash her brushes regularly though.
And unless she is sleeping in make up her skin will be clean for hours a day/night.

FloozeyLoozey · 28/07/2014 15:12

What on earth is a civet cat's bottom and fake coconut?!

Pyjamaramadrama · 28/07/2014 15:12

I've been swimming after work and can't be bothered to take make up off.

I sometimes put just foundation on if going swimming as I think my skin looks bad without it.

Pagwatch · 28/07/2014 15:12

A kid at swimming a few weeks ago hurled in the pool and they still didn't shut it so I'm guessing it will cope with a bit of bronzer.

donkir · 28/07/2014 15:14

My best friend always keeps a face full of makeup when swimming or doing exercise. Years of bullying when we were at school which led to several suicide attempts means that she has extremely low confidence and if makeup makes her feel a bit better about herself then do be it. We've been friends 21yrs and I've seen her twice without makeup and both times she's had a panic attack because she was so traumatised that I'd seen her.

HillyHolbrook · 28/07/2014 16:12

Devere

It's hardly constant advice! I'm big on beauty and skincare stuff, I work in the industry, she complains to me her skin is bad and wants to know why so I told her what I thought of it.

Makeup isn't bad for your skin and doesn't cause acne on it's own, but sweating, layering stuff over the sweat, never washing it off and layering more on in the morning does. She doesn't wash hers off, ever. I did mention she sleeps in it and no makeup is truly non-comodegenic. It's mostly clogged pores and inflammation that's her problem, and it's not the makeup alone, it's the dirty face, but she won't take off her makeup to clean her face. She then gets upset that it's patchy and cakey and you can see spots and things through it.

Like I said, vicious cycle.Sad

Frontier · 28/07/2014 16:48

How do you know with such certainty it's the make-up Hilly? Presumably she had problem skin before she started using the make-up or she wouldn't be using it....vicious circle

NellyNoodle1 · 28/07/2014 17:13

What's it to do with you?

I get so pissed off with all the judgemental shit on here 'why was she wearing make up' 'was my friend right to shout at her DS'

Unless it affects you personally butt out of peoples lives.

I always wear make-up. 'Cos I want to. I read someone's comment the other day that it was nice to work at a university because all the women didn't have to wear make-up to prove anything. WTVF?

NoodleOodle · 28/07/2014 17:28

Makeup doesn't bother me, but perfume does.

capsium · 28/07/2014 17:31

I wear make up swimming too (everything apart from mascara). I do the granny type breaststroke as well Pagwatch, Grin and the make up does not come off. I don't have to put more on when I come out or anything.

I can even wash my hair in the bath and leave my makeup intact if I want too . Not that I do this very often, only if I decide I want to wash my hair quickly, during the day. However, before you ask, I do wash my make up off at night!

Hey, I like wearing make up and I like the way it makes me look. I don't wear outrageous make up particularly, quite natural colours, though you know I wear at least eye make up. Am not embarrassed about the fact. My skin looks a bit blotchy without it, I am fair.

I actually think people who pride themselves on wearing none, and who judge those that wear it, can come across as a bit smug. Some people, I personally think, would look better with a little bit of make up, but I don't say anything to them, because that would be rude and it is only my opinion.

Deverethemuzzler · 28/07/2014 17:34

If she keeps layering make up on over old make up and never washes her face its not really the make up that is the issue is it?

I mean how does that even work? She must look really strange with months of old make up on her face.

5madthings · 28/07/2014 17:37

At my local pool you have to walk through a shower before you get in to wash off make up, Sun cream etc it's better for keeping pool water cleaner. I make sure I rinse off all the moisturiser I use on my skin.

I wouldn't swim wearing make up but I wear goggles and swim with face under etc.

Some people do swim keeping hair/face dry.

Olga79 · 28/07/2014 17:40

Makeup/perfume etc. does pollute the pool, the 'chlorine' smell most people associate with pools is actually the chlorine reacting with dirt, cosmetics etc.

If you're really doing granny head up breast stroke, then I guess that isn't an issue, but any benefits of swimming are negated by the fact that it's really bad for your back/neck.

Pagwatch · 28/07/2014 17:47

"If you're really doing granny head up breast stroke, then I guess that isn't an issue, but any benefits of swimming are negated by the fact that it's really bad for your back/neck."

Well not really for the approximately 20 meters I do between generally poncing about, dangling my feet and watching the children. I think my back and neck are safe.
My eyes hurt from the amount of eye rolling I'm doing on this thread though. Everything in moderation I suppose.

Pagwatch · 28/07/2014 17:49

"If she keeps layering make up on over old make up and never washes her face its not really the make up that is the issue is it?

Her face must be slowly getting bigger too as the layers build up. She must be like a cross between one of those women on beauty counters and the Face of Boe.

fluffyraggies · 28/07/2014 17:52

If the worst that's in the water at your local pool is a bit of sun cream and make up then you're very lucky! Grin There are usually more serious things for the filters to work on.

I used to go swimming mid morning, make up on. It was all where i left it when i got out again. Only my lips get wet, i keep my nose and upwards out of the water.

At home i sometimes put a shower cap on and have a shower without wetting my face as well, if i need a random freshen up. Make up stays put then too Grin

Frontier · 28/07/2014 17:55

I've often wondered about that Olga, the people who can pootle up and down with their head up for ages - it hurts!

capsium · 28/07/2014 17:59

Must have neck muscles of steel Frontier Grin It doesn't hurt. Mind I'm not as fast as DH who used to play water polo (and who swims properly).

HighwayDragon · 28/07/2014 18:00

I rarely wear makeup anyway but swimming, no way. Saying that I couldn't see myself in a mirror without my glasses..
