AIBU to wonder why someone would wear full makeup when swimming?

Swimming in a leisure centre pool and noyiced someone with full makeup.

I know I could not do it

I have never swam with my face under the water. I can't stand it. Nothing to do with make up.

Its not ineffective and its not 'granny swimming' either.

Jesus you can't get in a pool without people looking at you sideways for not doing something right.

We go swimming once a week, twice if it's the school break or on holiday it's very frequently.
I always have full make up on when swimming.

I'm not at all insecure about my looks, I just like how I look in makeup. I wear it every day regardless of what I am doing.

I don't put my head underwater when swimming as I think the chemicals are really bad for hair. As a result my face never gets wet so I don't see the point in removing my make up.

I don't see anything strange about it.

Re getting your face wet, I swim 'proper' breast stroke so face under and then up to breath in etc, I swam competitively as a teen and do distance swimming and swim in the sea, do snorkeling etc but I cannot stand to have my face in a shower I feel like I can't breath! Totally odd but I hate it makes me feel claustrophobic.

Do people do that ineffective granny swimming just so they don't have to wash their face and hair - or can't you do the breast stroke properly?

I can't really do it properly to be honest - I have never been able to do the proper breathing, having never been taught. Incidentally I do also have bad and sensitive skin and I don't like having bare, shiny, spotty, red skin in the pool.

I am so happy that my DC are getting proper swimming lessons and spend most of their time under the water. DS2 is only 3 and is so much more comfortable under the water than me.

It is very different. My swim-like-a-fish niece (who learned at 5) accompanied me to the local pool and offered to help me down the stairs as they might be different to what I'm used to and she didn't want me to fall in as I might not be good at swimming...

Make up doesn't cause acne. Total myth. She should wash her brushes regularly though.
And unless she is sleeping in make up her skin will be clean for hours a day/night.

Agreed. Wearing makeup in the daytime clears my skin. I have very greasy skin and specifically use a matte/drying foundation that works wonders for it. Without I'm a greasy mess and spots soon follow - not little surface whiteheads either, but deep cheek volcanoes that really damage my self esteem.

I was taught doggy paddle then granny breast stroke when I was a kid.
It make me boggle a bit that DD was in a national swim final at 11 whilst I was 11 the first time I ever got in a pool. The teaching is utterly different now.

Pagwatch... I don't like swimming on my back. Such is my er... physique, that I would feel as though I were in a sensory tank. I'd probably swim into somebody and it would make me nervous.

I have developed a weird thing about putting my face in the water in recent years. I don't know why really - I get a bit angsty about it.
I don't mind getting hair wet - I can do a gentle backstroke. And, when ds2 wanted to snorkel I was able to go with him.
It's odd. At some stage I may go back and have lessons or something. I've never been a great swimmer but this is an anxiety thing really. It's odd.

If they had granny breaststroke in the Olympics I would win something. Last year I swam from dhs water villa to mine without getting my face or hair wet. I am a human bloody turtle.

Another granny-type breaststroke swimmer here... I'd be interested in that research, Olga - I swim for an hour head up out of the water (make-up intact). Nothing wrong with my neck or back.

However, if I have a session with my trainer, every scrap of make-up comes off before he starts on me or I would look like Alice Cooper.

I rarely wear makeup anyway but swimming, no way. Saying that I couldn't see myself in a mirror without my glasses..

I've often wondered about that Olga, the people who can pootle up and down with their head up for ages - it hurts!

If the worst that's in the water at your local pool is a bit of sun cream and make up then you're very lucky! There are usually more serious things for the filters to work on.

I used to go swimming mid morning, make up on. It was all where i left it when i got out again. Only my lips get wet, i keep my nose and upwards out of the water.

At home i sometimes put a shower cap on and have a shower without wetting my face as well, if i need a random freshen up. Make up stays put then too

Well not really for the approximately 20 meters I do between generally poncing about, dangling my feet and watching the children. I think my back and neck are safe.
My eyes hurt from the amount of eye rolling I'm doing on this thread though. Everything in moderation I suppose.

Makeup/perfume etc. does pollute the pool, the 'chlorine' smell most people associate with pools is actually the chlorine reacting with dirt, cosmetics etc.

At my local pool you have to walk through a shower before you get in to wash off make up, Sun cream etc it's better for keeping pool water cleaner. I make sure I rinse off all the moisturiser I use on my skin.

I wouldn't swim wearing make up but I wear goggles and swim with face under etc.

Some people do swim keeping hair/face dry.
