I wear glasses and just recently my prescription has changed so I need more expensive lenses. Dh moaned as these glasses cost £250. So as I also needed sunglasses I agreed that some of my birthday money could be put towards sunglasses. (Ie moey mil was giving me). Instead he decided that he would give me an iou for sunglasses but I couldn't spend more than £100. This is ampl e as I planned to get single vision ones.
However, for his birthday he received treat items from everyone.
Now he needs glasses. We had a discussion in store as to whether he should get the cheap £69 ones or go designer. I basically said cheap ones. (as they were good enough for my birthday present)
This unlike me. Normally I rarely makes a fuss when he is extravagant. He earns good money. But tbh I am pissed off.
He is always moaning that we spend too much but as soon as he need something these rules no longer apply

Imagine if you woke on the morning of your birthday and you're DP had wrapped up some of your prescription for you. 'Happy birthday dear, here's 74 cerazette tablets, have a good'un.'

Same principle, it's something you need, it's not a gift or a treat. I can understand if you were truly skint, DP and I have done this whereby we get presents for each other that we actually need but when there's enough cash, it's not a present.

YANBU, he is though.
DH has glaucoma and needs specific (think jam jar bottom thickness) lenses which he gets from glasses direct and pays extra to have them adapted so they're not so thick. Even with the lovely Ted Baker frames he got last time they were still over £100 cheaper than they would have been at the optician and he got a free pair of prescription sunglasses.
