AIBU to be rather cynical over Mo Farah pulling out of Commonwealth Games

So, Mo has pulled out of Glasgow because he is still suffering after effects of his 'mysterious stomach problems a couple of weeks ago' and wants to ensure that he will be fully prepared/ready for the European Championships in August - or is it because he knows he's not in the form to take on the Africans. Me thinks he never really intended to run atGlasgow but to keep himself back for the Europeans where there is not such a high standard of opposition.
And, yes I do know what the effects of an illness can be on training/competition as I am actively involved in athletics.

he's the Olympic and World champion at 10K and the Olympic, World and European champion at 5K. Why on earth would you think he can't take on anyone??

YABVU.

museumum · 25/07/2014 16:21

I think it's nothing to do with fear of "the Africans" as he can beat them all on a good day and anyway there are no Ethiopians at the commonwealths.

But... I suspect he and his team probably suspected all along that being in form for competing in both was a long shot and the Europeans were clearly his priority.

Username12345 · 25/07/2014 16:23

He is the current 10,000 metres Olympic and World champion and 5000 metres Olympic, World and European champion.

So were there no Africans in the Olympic and World championships then?

I am well aware of who he has beaten IN THE PAST. My point is that tickets were sold on the basis that he (and some other high profile athletes) would be at the games.

Its cos he eats too much Quorn.

Lets be honest, this isn't about his decision and whether it was the right thing to do or not. Its because you are pissed because you don't get entertained.

If he didn't want to compete at the Olympics FOR WHATEVER reason, its up to him. Its not about entertaining the public...

No. Tickets were not sold on his presence. He initially said he would NOT run. THEN later he said he would.

museumum · 25/07/2014 16:34

I know because I have tickets. It was a nice surprise when he announced he was running, but initially when the ballot was open it was thought he wouldn't.

When you the 'Africans' you do realise he is Somali? Having a British passport doesn't change your ethnicity.

TheXxed · 25/07/2014 16:45

*say

NoArmaniNoPunani · 25/07/2014 16:49

I was coming on here to make a Quorn joke but I've been beaten to it :)

TortoiseUpATreeAgain · 25/07/2014 16:50

"My point is that tickets were sold on the basis that he (and some other high profile athletes) would be at the games."

But (in the main) they weren't. All bar the last tranche of tickets had already been sold before he announced in May that he was hoping to run. And it was only in mid-June, long after all the tickets were gone, that it was confirmed he would be in the team. So it's not a brilliant point, all things considered.

allmycats · 25/07/2014 16:50

Of course I know he's Somali.
This posting was meant to cause interest.
I am far more interested in the World Junior Championships than the Commonwealth Games.

Picklepest · 25/07/2014 16:53

No op it's just you are being a bit silly. Plainly you would prefer him to run, endanger his health, all so could can say cheeky fucker should've pulled out. Oh and I find the way you refer to his competitors as very distasteful.

Mrsjayy · 25/07/2014 17:02

Usain bolt was tempted to the relay by being offered dj gig he wasnt going to come allegedly I think there is more to it than they are making out I dont think its to do with mo not being able to take on africans though,

Nomama · 25/07/2014 17:05

VVU.

Not only was he ill he is also recovering from a muscle pull. And you do know it is only 2 weeks since the stomach pains hospitalised him, don't you?

He has had to make a decision, do the Commonwealth whilst not fully recovered and risk both comps, or forfeit the Commonwealth and go for the Worlds. He has already missed one prestigious comp because of his illness, worse, the Commonwealth is one of the medals he doesn't yet have - he will have had to think long and hard about that.

None of the high profile athletes had confirmed months in advance, they don't tend to because of injuries and problems with periodisation etc.

Nomama · 25/07/2014 17:07

*European Championships, not Worlds.... oops!

Butkin · 25/07/2014 23:08

Mo had nobody to fear at the Commonwealth Games. Even 90% fit he'd have won but he has sensibly saved his body for the events, like the Europeans, that he thinks he'll be fully fit for.

David Rudisha should be the star of these games (along with a cameo performance by Usain of course) but he'll be doing the 800 metres - not clashing with Mo's distances.
