To wonder if most of the Commonwealth will understand the opening ceremony

It's very, well.....Scottish?

How many people will recognise a Tunnocks tea cake or understand the cone on the head of the statue?

Not sure everyone will even be able to understand what Karen Dunbar is saying.

The cone is an emblem now on welling tins state outside the gallery of modern art. The council remove it every so often (been going on for years) and someone will replace it.

Frogisatwat · 23/07/2014 22:03

Anuerin bevan regularly wears a cone!

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 23/07/2014 22:08
St Davids I just learned to do that! Dragon

I hate the phone waving by the athletes. They are supposed to be the centre of attraction and the ones being filmed. It's like an oscar winner standing on the stage and filming the audience applauding her, it's just wrong. If they want to take pictures they can get audience seats and not bother competing.
Surprised there are so many folk in wheelchairs, didn't realised there was a disabled games attached to it, shows how much attention I've paid to past Commonwealth games.

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 23/07/2014 22:15

Shoot me down if you want to - but I don't think the UNICEF plugs are appropriate.

Janethegirl · 23/07/2014 22:17

I find the Unicef plugs intrusive too

Toadinthehole · 23/07/2014 22:18

I bet that if the Indians had made a thing of Cobra beer and how it's "most thrilling chilled" at their opening ceremony it would have been thought a bit odd and insular.

Bearbehind · 23/07/2014 22:20

I was a bit baffled but the UNICEF plugs too- are they the Commonwealth games charity or something.

Still laughing at the Scottish Terriors refusing to walk!

Thanks. Apparently the rest if the world is stupid.

Bearbehind · 23/07/2014 22:27

Bloody hell- people take offensive quickly don't they Hmm

I wasn't casting aspersions on any nationality's intelligence- simply pointing out that the very, very Scottish cliches might not be appreciated by everyone.

OP posts:
Middleagedmotheroftwo · 23/07/2014 22:38

Why are the commentators talking about "we" when England comes on?

Montegomongoose · 23/07/2014 22:39

They're not cliches if you don't know what they are, they're just something representative of that country.

I simply did not see why you needed to state the obvious; that some people watching might wonder what the red and silver foil mushrooms signified.

I don't think I'm easily offended at all, but I did think your OP was typically British overcompensatory panic-in-case-the-former-colonies-take-offence-and-feel-excluded.

I want a Scottie dog to pee on someone. Ewan McGregor preferably.

Well it wasn't meant to be at all and I think it that's how you took it you might want to consider who is over compensating Hmm

Well it wasn't meant to be at all

There we are then, salutary lessons all round!

Wales seem to be dressed as ageing Bay City rollers.

I'm looking forward to the ^closing* ceremony. The arrogant disdain the BBC is showing for those not obsessed with sport over the next eleven days us beyond outrageous.

omg I love you
so glad I am the only one who feels this way

Bearbehind · 23/07/2014 22:48

They have nothing on the Scottish outfits- still they'll all want to run, swim ride faster than anyone else otherwise they'll have the piss taken out of them for that ensemble if anyone catches up with them!

OP posts:
Middleagedmotheroftwo · 23/07/2014 22:55

Oh! Leave off the Welsh!St Davids.
Scots looked predictably awful. I saw the outfits in the papers couple of weeks ago.

Bearbehind · 23/07/2014 22:58

Is it only me that thinks UNICEFs donation system will just blow up now anyway?

OP posts:
Montegomongoose · 23/07/2014 22:58

Can you imagine the kicking they'd get on Sauchiehall Street at chucking out time?

If it was Edinburgh, they'd all be in navy pleats and wee lawn blouses with tasteful earrings. And the women.

Worth still begin up at this silly time taking imaginary offence to leer over James McAvoy in a kilt and boots. Grrr.

Bearbehind · 23/07/2014 23:00

Has he got a kilt and boots on?

I can't stop looking at his eyes!

The UNICEF thing isnt right imho, its like watching comic relief or children in need or something, this is the commonwealth games. I dont mind a bit of sport, I enjoy it. This feels all a bit cheap.

Frogisatwat · 23/07/2014 23:02

Pissed off with the unicef plugging. If anyone asks why.. I just am..

Bearbehind · 23/07/2014 23:04

For me I think it's because if you choose to watch Children in need, sports relief etc you know what to expect- this seems to be ramming a charity, unrelated to sport, down your throat.

OP posts:
Middleagedmotheroftwo · 23/07/2014 23:05

Me too. This isn't a sportathon. I donated though.
I suppose from the event producers POV, its a cheap way to fill in time.

jeanmiguelfangio · 23/07/2014 23:08

Good point middle, celebs waive fees too for charity
