It's very, well.....Scottish?

How many people will recognise a Tunnocks tea cake or understand the cone on the head of the statue?

Not sure everyone will even be able to understand what Karen Dunbar is saying.

Flat not fist. I give up this ipad is being charged...now

LePetitPont · 23/07/2014 21:28

Susan Boyle was incredibly out of time with her pianist. Just don't get it!

Loved the tunnochs tea cake but overall, was expecting someone to come on with a big Vote Yes banner after the demonstration of Scottish industry (sans oil).

millionsofpeaches · 23/07/2014 21:28

Didn't Susan Boyle mess up the words at the beginning or did I just imagine it?

Numanoid · 23/07/2014 21:28

Not sure everyone will even be able to understand what Karen Dunbar is saying.

Really? I struggle with a lot of English accents... maybe it's just avice-versa thing. I can't understand Liverpudlians over the phone for the life of me.

If they are promoting the Yes vote, have to say I'm fully behind it. Also no harm in showcasing Glasgow, the host city.

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 23/07/2014 21:30

I thought she messed up too million.

Andrewofgg · 23/07/2014 21:32

I'm looking forward to the ^closing* ceremony. The arrogant disdain the BBC is showing for those not obsessed with sport over the next eleven days us beyond outrageous.

cardibach · 23/07/2014 21:32

She messed up big time then was unable to keep in pitch - as usual when she doesn't have the benefit of autotune... I know many, many amateur singers who have better tone and technique than Susan Boyle. The National Anthem singer was better than her, whoever was saying he couldn't sing Hmm

Bettercallsaul1 · 23/07/2014 21:33

The ballet was lovely - that was the best version of that song I've heard.

cardibach · 23/07/2014 21:33

I'm not obsessed with sport, Andrew, but I accept that a major event like this will have pots of coverage. I prefer it to the World Cup, but I didn't complain about that, just watched other stations.

cardibach · 23/07/2014 21:34

lots not pots!

Janethegirl · 23/07/2014 21:34

I loved the tunnocks tea cakes

Numanoid · 23/07/2014 21:35

Andrew I can't wait for it to be over either. So many roads are closed, train station is packed every day and getting to work is now difficult for a lot of people. It's good for the economy and the city (tourist industry and such) but I'm not in the least interested.

Bearbehind · 23/07/2014 21:35

This is terrible. I know a lot of the cast are volunteers but it's like a bad school play.

It's catching cardi thus posting problems.... :-)

Groovee · 23/07/2014 21:37

They were still advertising for performers a couple of weeks ago.

Still looking forward to seeing Tattie at the bowling this weekend. My wee lad is so excited. He can't believe his dad grew up with him in the bowling circuts.

Bettercallsaul1 · 23/07/2014 21:37

Susan Boyle's voice was quite wavery - may well have been nerves. I don't think she's the most confident of individuals.

Groovee · 23/07/2014 21:38

OMG the athletes are holding phones and stuff to video it.

millionsofpeaches · 23/07/2014 21:42

Groovee they always do this. Did it at the Olympics and Winter Olympics too. What's wrong with it?

Bearbehind · 23/07/2014 21:43

PMSL at the man having to carry his Scottish Terrior!

Groovee · 23/07/2014 21:49

I think it looks awful. Never noticed it before. The world is taken over by technology.

Montegomongoose · 23/07/2014 21:51

To wonder if most of the Commonwealth will understand the opening ceremony

I'm from the commonwealth, and I understand it fine as will the majority of my rellies gathered round the one telly in the village...

I don't expect to understand every cultural reference of every country I have lived in; I'm not sure what you mean by 'understand' in this context.

Surely everyone non-Scottish watching it will 'understand' that it's a celebration of Scottish heritage, and a welcome by Glasgow to other countries.

Forgive me if I misread your tone, OP, but that sounded SO patronising.

CorporateRockWhore · 23/07/2014 21:52

I'm not really getting the whole Yes propaganda argument.

If we weren't coming up to the referendum do you think there would be no tartan/pipes/rod stewart/stupid wee dogs?

We would have had the same tacky embarrassing out of date crap we are unfortunately showing right now!

Andrewofgg · 23/07/2014 21:52

cardibach BBC1 and BBC3 handed over wholesale and at some points BBC2 also showing sport, that dismal procession known as Grand Prix. Just too much.

Bearbehind · 23/07/2014 21:53

It wasn't meant to sound patronising at all- I just wondered how many people would understand the 'cultural reference' of a Tunnocks tea cake!

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 23/07/2014 21:55

I'm looking forward to seeing the Scotland team in those really nice outfits they had specially designed Grin
