I do not expect my friends to know every piece of classical music, or to know the Latin names of every plant - but jeez, I expect them to have heard of Brief Encounter!

I do love the clipped accents and the period details though. Like changing one's "laibrary book at Booits".

susiedaisy · 20/07/2014 19:30

Off to google brief encounter as I've never heard of it.

Deverethemuzzler · 20/07/2014 19:32

I love it.
I saw the stage adaptation and that was wonderful.

I bought the DVD for a quid from Sainsburys.

A QUID!

If you like Brief Encounter you must like Mrs Miniver and Random Harvest, Waterloo Bridge and This Happy Breed?

grocklebox · 20/07/2014 19:32

It's a great film, but its from 1945. Why should everyone know about a 70 year old film?

TinklyLittleLaugh · 20/07/2014 19:32

Oh, I think I may have a bit of grit in my eye.

PhaedraIsMyName · 20/07/2014 19:33

The husband was fine, I didn't really see what the attraction for the other man was but then I've never understood why Anna fell for the awful Vronsky over Karenin.

shakethetree · 20/07/2014 19:34

It's great Mardy isn't it - I've seen it so many times Smile

I love Random Harvest and Waterloo Bridge.

MardyBra · 20/07/2014 19:35

"I've never understood why Anna fell for the awful Vronsky over Karenin."

And as for Mme Bovary... I just wanted to give her a good slapping.

noblegiraffe · 20/07/2014 19:35

Actually, if there had been big fuck-off spaceship in it, I might have enjoyed it more.

MardyBra · 20/07/2014 19:36

Genuine lol at giraffe

shakethetree · 20/07/2014 19:38

The war ended in 1945, I'd expect people to know about that.

Just because something happened years ago is no excuse ( & I'm joking with you Wink )

What with the Close Encounters confusion, and some smutty people thinking it was a porn movie, I now have a mental image of Celia Johnson confronted by naked aliens.

Form an orderly queue and step right up.

MardyBra · 20/07/2014 19:41

I don't know any latin plant names. And obviously my piano concerto knowledge is limited OP. Would you ditch me OP? Wink

MardyBra · 20/07/2014 19:41

Sorry. Overuse of OP there.

Not at all Mardy, you like Brief Encounter so I could forgive you being a bit thick in other areas Grin

shakethetree · 20/07/2014 19:46

Hello Precious - you don't know how pleased I am to hear that Smile

SallyMcgally · 20/07/2014 19:48

Yes. You are being ridiculous and snooty.

brainwashed · 20/07/2014 19:50

Brief encounter used to be my favourite film..until I saw random harvest :-)

TalcumPowder · 20/07/2014 19:51

Well, it's not to everyone's taste - all that suppressed feeling and clipped consonants (and that's only the children!) - but I would think it odd if a 43 year old from this part of the world hadn't at least heard of it.

Loving the idea of aliens infiltrating the station buffet at a crucial moment.

shakethetree · 20/07/2014 19:54

Supposed to be about repressed British emotions but they were all over each other and only circumstance stopped them shagging.

Really noble?! Is this some 90s US remake?
