I do not expect my friends to know every piece of classical music, or to know the Latin names of every plant - but jeez, I expect them to have heard of Brief Encounter!

What's any of it got to do with the price of fish?!

Fram · 20/07/2014 19:10

I think there are just some things, such as cultural references that one expects ones friends to know!

And, no Argy, I doubt there's anything I haven't heard of! Wink

Ha got halfway through this thread thinking what was so romantic about that film and why has no one mention the big fuck off spaceship before I realised I had 'close encounters...' In my mind- don't suppose you'll be my friend then OP Grin

I used to love this film. When I rewatched it recently, I felt that the affair was a bit sordid rather than a grand passion. I think I've been tainted from lurking on too many MN relationships threads.

MardyBra · 20/07/2014 19:14

The music's Rachmaninov isn't it?

MardyBra · 20/07/2014 19:15

No idea about the station though.

greedygal · 20/07/2014 19:19

It is my most favourite film. I love love love it! My Husband organised a private cinema screening of the film as part of my 40th this year. Pure classic & intelligent.

Bin your friend.

I thought the DH was pretty OK - especially for the time. She sort of does her own think while he's at work - no controlling behaviours as far as I can see. He gives her emotional space when she needs it.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 20/07/2014 19:24

Carnforth station.

But you can't bin a friend over this, that would be far worse than he not knowing a very old film, even if it is a classic. I've only seen it once, yes it's atmospheric but I wouldn't rush to watch it again.

PhaedraIsMyName · 20/07/2014 19:25

I'd be amazed if any of my friends hadn't heard of Brief Encounter.

It's the second piano concerto. I don't like Rachmaninoff generally and I think it's a bit overwrought although I suppose it's meant to reflect their inner turmoil.

I don't know the station.

MardyBra · 20/07/2014 19:26

Alec was such a drip too.

MardyBra · 20/07/2014 19:27

And he should have been sacked from his doctoring job. Bloody shirker.

LangenFlugelHappleHoff · 20/07/2014 19:28

Waa? Is it a film? I'll guess aliens?...

Or a porno....

either way... waaaa?

Dolcelatte · 20/07/2014 19:28

YANBU!!!!!

shakethetree · 20/07/2014 19:28

Oh greedygal I think I love you - & I'm an ordinary woman, I didn't think such violent things could happen to ordinary people.
