To think there is nothing at all wrong with not going abroad on holiday

manchestermummy · 16/07/2014 20:49

That's it really. We love to go abroad but can't afford it every year, so this year we're off to the South West for a week. We're really looking forward to the break and the dc are excited about it too.

I am sick to death of people looking all Shock when I say where we are off too. I am sick of MIL people telling us how awful the journey will be (we've done further before and drove across half of fecking Canada when dd1 was 20 mo). I am sick of my parents banging on and on about their recent 5k cruise (yes I am jealous) before asking if our static caravan has electricity and running water ffs.

I am sick of the media telling me I am going on a staycation. It's a holiday.

Is it just me? I am starting to feel really down about it because people are telling me how awful it's going to be.

I thought a staycation meant staying at home

We're going within the UK too (from uk) and I definitely consider it a holiday

manchestermummy · 16/07/2014 20:53

So did I but then some holiday show was comparing 'proper' holidays with 'staycations' then proceeded to go on about going to Edinburgh. Or somewhere.

The SW has some really fab things to do with kids, some fantastic scenery, Moors, beaches, woods....of course you are NU for wanting something more exotic, but really, it is an amazing part of the world and you will have a fantastic holiday!!

Happy36 · 16/07/2014 21:01

Of course you are being reasonable.

I live abroad and my kids go to an expensive school (where I teach) so some of their classmates are ludicrously wealthy but leaving the country for a holiday is very very rare and almost exclusively for visiting family members if they live abroad.

For people who live in the U.K. it can be much cheaper to holiday abroad so there can be no financial stigma attached to holidaying in the U.K.

Enjoy your holidays and ignore anyone with low self-esteem trying to show off about their exotixlc travels (diarrhoea on RyanAir, more like).

NothingMoreScaryThanAHairyMary · 16/07/2014 21:02

I love the sw (I live here) we are going to Scotland for our holiday ! Staying with family is nice but there is so much more to do down here...

writtenguarantee · 16/07/2014 21:03

I think it's just you.

if it's what you want to do, then do it. It sounds fun to me.

lovelyredwine · 16/07/2014 21:03

The UK is a beautiful country and the weather can be great, so why not go on holiday here? We've recently been to the SW by car from the NW (so sounds similar to your holiday). It was great- lovely old fashioned fun. Beaches, sand castles, rock pools, ice cream and fish and chips on the beach. Our dd loved it and so did we. The journey was fine (although made easier by a seat back DVD player and lots of snacks!). Ignore everyone who is negative and enjoy our lovely country.

mrsminiverscharlady · 16/07/2014 21:04

That's really not been my experience at all. Nobody has ever raised an eyebrow when I've said we're not going abroad, and I know loads of people who holiday in this country too.

Is it an inverted-snobbery-class thing?

Perfectlypurple · 16/07/2014 21:06

Going on holiday is going somewhere and doing something you wouldn't do at home. If your idea of a holiday is a uk one then it's a holiday. Ignore anyone else. I live in the south west so have to go elsewhere for a holiday though! Although I probably should do a 'staycation' one day and make the most of what I have on my doorstep!

dietcokeandwine · 16/07/2014 21:06

Ignore them OP.

The UK can be the very best place for a holiday IMO - especially if you get a few days of decent weather. Fabulous scenery, amazing beautiful beaches, loads and loads of things to do. We're big fans of the Welsh coast and always have a wonderful time.

And think about all the practical advantages of a UK based holiday. No airports, no awful flights or flight transfers, no faffing around for hours waiting for luggage. No chance of your holiday being ruined by flight delays, cancellations, passport hassles or anything like that. (You can always travel at night to avoid major traffic jams for your UK break, that's what we always did as children, we'd set off around 3am and be pretty much there in time for breakfast. Can't do that when you're tied to the airline's schedule).

If all else fails, smile sweetly and point out that the UK is currently having hotter weather than the continent anyway Grin

You'll have an amazing time, have fun!

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 16/07/2014 21:14

Well I'm all Envy that you're going away at all. We had a few days in Kent when the dc's were small about five years ago and before that it was my honeymoon about ten years ago. That was the last time I went abroad.

MiddleAgeMiddleEngland · 16/07/2014 21:23

This attitude really annoys me. For various reasons, we rarely go abroad and have had some fantastic holidays in the uk. There are so many beautiful places to visit. The SW is lovely.

Quite a few people I know are having holidays in the Uk this summer, I don't think it's that unusual. And when you get there, there will be lots of British people also on holiday, you won't be the only ones.

Have a really good time, I hope the weather stays warm.

funkybuddah · 16/07/2014 21:25

We go to Dorset every year. Asked the kids if they want to go to Spain or elsewhere abroad next year to be met with wails of protest at not going to dorset (6 & 12 so well aware of what it means) we always have a wonderful time so dorset it is. We go at easter too rather than summer hols so people would be even more aghast at me.

areyoubeingserviced · 16/07/2014 21:47

I have been fortunate to have visited many countries. However, this year I am going to the Isle of Wight.
I am really looking forward to it
Ignore OP, England is a beautiful country.

BrianButterfield · 16/07/2014 21:53

We don't like the idea of travelling abroad with young children (well, specifically our young children) but as we can only go away in school holidays going abroad is very expensive anyway. So instead of that we spread it through the year and have done B&B by the seaside, a caravan in the Lakes, camping and Center Parcs already this year, with more camping, a city break and a staycation (we live near the beach and have a chalet booked) planned this summer. All with happy children in tow as nothing is more than three hours travel away. No worries about the sun or unfamiliar food for picky toddlers, and all the fun of new places to explore, caravans to check out (we love them) and plenty of lazy days spent playing, in pools or going for day trips.

FryOneFatManic · 16/07/2014 21:57

Dp is 53 and has never had a passport. We have holidayed in Britain all the time we have been together (27 years +).

I'd sort of like to go abroad, but he won't and we have had some lovely holidays here.

OliviaBenson · 16/07/2014 21:58

I know what you mean op. In the UK we have such amazing things to do- fabulous landscapes, wildlife, heritage, towns and cities. I think we take it for granted and as a nation are obsessed with going abroad.

I have been abroad this year and enjoyed it, but I love my uk based holidays too - I get just as much from them!

Enjoy your holiday Grin

Mintyy · 16/07/2014 21:59

Has anyone said to you that there is something wrong with going on holiday in the UK?

ILoveCoreyHaim · 16/07/2014 22:01

I used to go abroad but after 2 crap all inclusive holidays i decided to stay in the UK. I just have 3 caravan holidays instead of one abroad. The kids love it. We are away next week and the last week of the school holidays.

Next year I am aiming to get down to Cornwell or the Isle of Wight or Man. I have already booked Blackpool, yes cheesy but the kids love it.

CMOTDibbler · 16/07/2014 22:02

I'm very happy camping in the UK. Colleagues tell me that they can't imagine not having a 'hot' holiday to look forward to (we are book something 3 weeks in advance people, though have the time booked off many months in advance).

My idea of hell is sitting by a pool or on a beach, so being the three of us in peaceful surroundings is bliss

Itscurtainsforyou · 16/07/2014 22:07

I am currently on holiday in the south west and having a great time!

Tbh I have no idea how people afford to go on holiday abroad with a family...

Only1scoop · 16/07/2014 22:09

Have a great time all my favourite hols as a child were like the one you describe....

Wolfiefan · 16/07/2014 22:11

Ooh serviced us too. And we are camping! Soooo looking forward to it. This way we can take all our crap essentials. We won't be getting heatstroke or stranded in an airport.
It's a holiday. Enjoy!!
(Oh and trawl the papers looking for stories of dysentery on cruises and snakes on planes! Grin)

Rivercam · 16/07/2014 22:12

We've had two great holidays on Cornwall during the last couple of years. Enjoy!

manchestermummy · 16/07/2014 22:12

minty "Omg, you're going to [insert name of destination] for you main holiday?!"
