To think there is nothing at all wrong with not going abroad on holiday

That's it really. We love to go abroad but can't afford it every year, so this year we're off to the South West for a week. We're really looking forward to the break and the dc are excited about it too.

I am sick to death of people looking all Shock when I say where we are off too. I am sick of MIL people telling us how awful the journey will be (we've done further before and drove across half of fecking Canada when dd1 was 20 mo). I am sick of my parents banging on and on about their recent 5k cruise (yes I am jealous) before asking if our static caravan has electricity and running water ffs.

I am sick of the media telling me I am going on a staycation. It's a holiday.

Is it just me? I am starting to feel really down about it because people are telling me how awful it's going to be.

We're going here in just over three weeks. It's in north Wales
I'm very excited as are the rest of my family.

allhailqueenmab where is this campsite, please…?!

I have to say I don't notice the attitude in the OP. We always go to Cornwall for our hols because we have a holiday cottage there. We love it & we are very lucky.

I don't like the idea of our kids equating holiday with must go abroad - so I like to shake things up - we often take a travel abroad at Easter when the weather is cool enough to explore and then we explore the uk over the summer - we stay in everything from 5 star hotels to campsites with no flushing loos. This summer we are heading to the south west too - no one has felt sorry for us and we're really looking forward to it - the long drive will be a bitch, but so are the long flights we often take.
Forget other people and enjoy the holiday - for me cruises and resorts are my holiday hell, but lots of my friends hate camping and love resorts...no one's should be judging!

WhatTheFork · 17/07/2014 10:57

Crieff Hydro for us this year again.

I spent ages trying to get us a last minute-ish holiday last year. We wanted to go to Barcelona but flight times were silly. Didn't fancy Sharm or Magaluf etc.

Booked CH after thinking sod it we'll stay in UK. Now it is our first choice for a summer holiday.

allhailqueenmab · 17/07/2014 11:06

Elizabeth, I'm not telling you!! if there are any pitches left I want my sister to nab one

LalaLeona · 17/07/2014 11:06

Wow, sorry OP but your friends and family must be the most dreadful snobs!! We have had holidays in Devon and Cornwall for the last two years, and never once have we been greeted by a shocked face on telling people.

RonSwansonsLushMoustache · 17/07/2014 11:07

WetAugust those photos are beautiful. Your username fills me with anxiety though.

Due to factors we're also going to the SW this year. Nobody has remarked on it, lots of people we know holiday in the UK. We are a bit nervous about the weather, our usual preferred destination is southern Europe.

I'm looking forward to exploring the SW though. I haven't been down there since I was a teenager and it's nice to have the opportunity to go before heading back to Europe next year.

digdeepforanswers · 17/07/2014 11:09

I am a rarity. I have never been abroad Except to Scot/Wales. I hear children of 14 say they have been to six foreign countries. Not for me

lynniep · 17/07/2014 11:14

I think you know the wrong people!! We are going on our first 'abroad' family holiday this year.
For the last 7 years we've always holidayed in the UK and no one has ever questioned it or asked when we are doing a 'proper' holiday. (Although MIL did query once why we didn't go to Canada as 'she could sort us out some accommodation with her friend'. Um, because of the cost of four flights to Canada?!!)

Openup41 · 17/07/2014 11:21

Holidaying in the UK can be fun.

However in my opinion it does not compare to going abroad. In my teens/20's I lived for sun holidays. I would not say this in rl as it could offend people.

We are not going abroad this year. We cannot afford it. Sad

Vintagejazz · 17/07/2014 11:25

When I was a child (in Ireland0 the vast majority of people didn't go abroad for their holidays. I have lovely memories of holidays beside the sea or staying in country locations and seeing cows being milked and getting to ride on donkeys down country lanes.

I am taking a month off work and will be going to a couple of nice hotels for mini breaks and the rest of the time just chilling, seeing friends, enjoying having unstructured days etc. I actually think that can be more relaxing than going abroad with all the shopping for summer clothes, making sure passports are in date, changing money, packing suitcases, the nightmare that is airport security, delayed flights etc.

hell2theno · 17/07/2014 11:29

I love holidaying in the UK. And in fact I've found that the more I've travelled around the world the more I long for holidays just at home. No airport/travel hassle, no language issues, no worrying about what to pack. We have a beautiful country and we are very lucky. Give me a week in Dorset over a week in Sharm el Sheikh any day.

whatthefork we very nearly booked Crief Hydro too. I wanted to go to Loch Lomond and be by the sea so we are doing that but hoping to drive via Crief

Pico2 · 17/07/2014 12:04

Getting to the Isles of Scilly is sadly expensive too.

Vintagejazz · 17/07/2014 12:29

I don't really understand the snobbery about going abroad anyway. A package holiday in Spain is much cheaper than staying in a lot of hotels or holiday homes in the UK or Ireland. And things like eating out, buying some drinks or paying into various tourist attractions is often much dearer at home than abroad.

FryOneFatManic · 17/07/2014 21:15

We are on holiday in Northumberland right now. It's been a lovely day for the weather, have been out all day and I'm now just sitting with a cuppa while on here for a few minutes to relax. The DCs have just gone to bed.

Due to a combination of factors, we rarely get more than one week off together to go away each year, and we try different parts of the UK, only going back to fave places every 2-3 years to keep it all fresh for us.
