To expect teapots in a cafe?

MrsBellTeapot · 15/07/2014 17:39

I was out shopping on Saturday and I fancied a cup of tea so I called into a cafe in one of the big department stores. I ordered a tea and a scone, expecting my tea to come in a teapot with a cup to pour it in. Imagine my surprise when the girl started making my tea and she put it in a cup. I said "excuse me do you have any teapots?" and she told me "no, sorry we only cups of tea".

I expressed my dismay at this and told the other lady on the till that I prefer tea in a teapot and they should really start doing tea in a teapot. I would have went somewhere else only I needed a tea and I told them this. I don't think they took me seriously which is a shame that they don't listen to customers.

AIBU to thing cafes should provide pots for tea? Most places do, don't they? At least most places I have been.

Is this another windup thread?

ShatnersBassoon · 15/07/2014 17:41

I simply can't imagine your surprise.

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 15/07/2014 17:42

Is this the same cafe that won't make toast for a baby?

What is the world coming to?

mumtosome61 · 15/07/2014 17:44

Oh OP, didn't you know - you're supposed to BUY the teapot you require your tea to be brewed in and THEN take it to the café. How embarrassing for the staff, did you not know the etiquette these days?

Did you not check the menu? If it states pot of tea you get a pot. If it says tea then has the price under a size of cup you get a cup. Quite simple then to choose the right place.

The menu just said tea but there was only one price and one size. The coffee and hot chocolate came in different sizes though with different prices to match.

YANBU. Of course tea should be in a pot, with an extra pot of hot water, milk in a jug that pours properly instead of that horrible UHT. And it should be leaf tea not teabags. Anything less isn't tea IMO.

Happy36 · 15/07/2014 17:54

It is a shame as tea in a pot is nicer and feels like more of a treat. However I would not say that a teapot is to be expected automatically. If it is a "must" for you then stick to cafés that do provide them.

Molotov · 15/07/2014 17:54

What is the world coming to?

No fucking teapots for tea!!!

Get a grip, please.

MrsBellTeapot · 15/07/2014 17:54

It's not really a big deal I agree, I just like to have my tea in teapot. The girl at the till did say that other people had asked about teapots when ordering tea so I'm not the only one who feels like this.

I actually regret not asking for the manager so I could tell him/her they should really take customers opinions on board and if people wanted teapots that's what they should get. Do you think I should have done?

whereisthewitch · 15/07/2014 17:54

Most independent coffee shops/cafes I find do tea in a pot, chains such as Starbucks and cafe nero etc do a mug of tea.

what's the big deal?

vestandknickers · 15/07/2014 17:59

No teapots?

The bastards!

ICanSeeTheSun · 15/07/2014 18:01

I like the teapot as you can normally get 2 cups out of the 1 pot.

WaitMonkey · 15/07/2014 18:03

I really want to know about the cafe, toast, baby story.

Happy36 · 15/07/2014 18:03

Yes. It´s not too late, either pop in and mention it to them or send them an e-mail.

littlepeas · 15/07/2014 18:04

It isn't a big deal, but I do agree that a teapot is nicer! I just accidentally pasted Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's Melazane parmigiana recipe into the end of that (obviously the last link I copied!). Actually I'll put it back - it's very yummy:

MrsBellTeapot · 15/07/2014 18:06

Exactly, it's more value for money.

I might pop in tomorrow and speak to the person in charge.

vestandknickers · 15/07/2014 18:09

Oh please pop in tomorrow.

I'm sure they'll appreciate the seriousness of the issue.....Grin

Do you think maybe you need a hobby OP? You seem to have quite a lot of time on your hands and very little to occupy your thoughts.

Just saying!

Trapper · 15/07/2014 18:11

YANBU. I was in Starbucks the other day and they gave me a drink-in coffee in a paper cup. I refused it and asked for China. They didn't have any so I demanded a refund. She looked a little surprised...

EndoplasmicReticulum · 15/07/2014 18:11

I'm guessing you're somewhere in the South where they don't know how to make tea properly.

wellnowthenmardybum · 15/07/2014 18:11

Someone please alert the village elders faints

Anarchy99 · 15/07/2014 18:13

WILL SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN

MrsBellTeapot · 15/07/2014 18:16

I have hobbies, I like art (was actually shopping for art supplies) and spending time with my children. I also like tea in a teapot. They should take it seriously because they should listen to their customers views.
