To think I've permanently damaged my knee?

Iusedtobelardy · 15/07/2014 17:09

Last year, ie 2013, I gained 4 stone. I was massive pretty obese (14 and a half stone at my heaviest) and I'm 5'2.

There were lots of things that pushed me to lose it (last summers heat wave wasn't pretty) but my knee was agony. I could barely walk, Im not kidding.

4 and a half stone down now and I'm back to a normal weight.

From time to time that knee still aches.

Have I permanently damaged myself through being a lardarse?

Which part if your knee aches? How long has it hurt for? Can you see a physio and ask for excersises to strengthen it.

Iusedtobelardy · 15/07/2014 17:20

It only aches from time to time - very sporadic, but nonetheless it's there. Usually if I've been squatting down and stand up again, I 'feel' it, I've noticed it since I gained the weight to be honest.

I've no idea how to go about seeing a physio! Plus I don't think it's that bad. It barely hurts but from time to time it does and it never used to. So I think I must have weakened it when it was carrying my flab around Blush

Go to your GP who will refer you to the appropriate person.

Iusedtobelardy · 15/07/2014 18:12

Hmm, I don't have a GP. I'll have to leave it, I think - thanks!

I hurt my knee slipping on a wet manhole cover. I didn't bother going to my GP, as they are fairly useless. I am now pain free after 5 months - so it may take time.

ICanSeeTheSun · 15/07/2014 19:15

How come you haven't got a GP, are you in the uk

MildDrPepperAddiction · 15/07/2014 19:22

You need to register with a doctor and pay them a visit. If you leave it it will get worse.

RevoltingPeasant · 15/07/2014 19:25

I'd see a physio.

It may possibly be muscular weakness that can be remedied with exercise.

It may be joint damage of some type that is longer term but will eventually heal. The fact that it has got better suggests it might heal further. I have an old injury in a joint which flares up periodically but is not generally an issue, so it may be like this.

I would not see a GP because they can really only prescribe painkillers and refer you for physio, and you are unlikely to get NHS physio for something comparatively minor which is not affecting mobility etc.

Iownafourinchporsche · 15/07/2014 19:48

You haven't said which part of the knee hurts. It sounds similar to something I had though, which I've recovered from now. There will be excersises you can do to help it if you google

Iownafourinchporsche · 15/07/2014 19:49

Google physios in your area and then email them asking about costs, appointments. It's simple to do

Iusedtobelardy · 15/07/2014 22:20

Well, I don't know about it getting worse! It's been a lot better since I stopped being lardy!

But it hasn't gone altogether. It's just achey from time to time. And I don't know which part hurts. Just - my knee? Grin Yes, I'm in the UK, I just haven't bothered registering with a GP as there's never anything wrong with me apart from once being fat

The thing is I really don't think it's bad enough for a physio. It doesn't hurt 23 hours and 55 minutes of every day. But ever so often it does, when I stand up or something. It never used to, but when I was fat it hurt a lot. The pain is the same as the fat pain but nowhere near as frequent - in other words it doesn't ache just to haul my body around.

Get your self registered at a gp, you never know when you will need antibiotics.

If you have no gp, intake it your smears are not up to date.

Iusedtobelardy · 15/07/2014 22:28

My smear is actually as I moved in spring 2012 and had a smear done just before I moved. Grin I can always use the walk in centre if I need antibiotics.

You need some quadriceps strengthening exercises. Of course a physiotherapist would be of help.

Get thee registered with a GP asap, you silly mare.

And I cannot tell you how impressed I am with your weight loss - kudos.

Igggi · 15/07/2014 22:34

There is clearly something else going on here or you wouldn't be saying "I'll have to leave it" when someone suggests you get yourself a GP.

OHforDUCKScake · 15/07/2014 22:36

Physio.

4.5 stone weight loss in 12 months is bloody brilliant by the way.

OP, last summer started running. I hate exercise. Its shit, cant stand it. The only reason why I started running was because each time I left the house I pictured myself closing the door and running away from my kids after a hard day with them (obvs they werent alone).
Anyway, my knee hurt 3 weeks in and Id never suffered with knee pain ever, stopped running and it lasted months before it healed itself.

Ive not run since, Ive been too worried, so I can totally understand why it bothers you too. Im waiting for physio for my scoliosis and wonkey hips and pelvis (which prob caused the knee pain) and Im told its worth sticking at.

Iusedtobelardy · 15/07/2014 22:37

Igggi like what? I don't know what you mean? Confused

Thanks Pacific! Grin I suppose I am technically registered with a GP, but it's at my old address.

The thing is, I do do exercise, and it doesn't bother me then, and it doesn't generally bother me at all. But for instance I was squatting on the floor earlier (I was looking at a book in Waterstone's; I don't generally squat on floors!) stood up and - yowch! - for a split second, then fine.

It's just it never did this before becoming fat! And now I am not fat and the knee seems weaker, somehow!

OHforDUCKScake · 15/07/2014 22:38

Hang on, you dont have a GP?

Iusedtobelardy · 15/07/2014 22:38

Yeah I don't run because I can't I'm worried about my knee!

I do do other cardio exercise though and it seems fine but running is obviously quite high impact.

OHforDUCKScake · 15/07/2014 22:39

X posted.

Physio.

OHforDUCKScake · 15/07/2014 22:40

Also, you need really decent running shoes.

LoveBeingInTheSun · 15/07/2014 22:40

Totally off on a tangent well done for the weight loss and how did you do it?

Iusedtobelardy · 15/07/2014 22:41

I don't run, though! Grin

Thanks, Love, I did Slim and Save, a meal replacement thingy (you can google it) - it was hard at first but so much better than being fat!

OP physios are not just for constant pain, they are for any niggle you want sorting out. I use them any time I have a sports injury which isn't going away on its own. It's an ounce of intervention for a pound of cure long term.

Also much as I love my GP, many GP are not super experienced at dealing with sports injuries and will tend to say things like "well don't run if it hurts" and tell you to take ibuprofen. Which is not great if you want a safe way to keep running (or whatever).

Whereas a physio will be more about supporting you to exercise and strengthen yourself so the pain goes away.

Iusedtobelardy · 15/07/2014 22:45

Cheers Revolting (love the name!) - will try to get something sorted.

Hopefully it CAN be sorted and I haven't permanently done any damage!
