The Shame!

Last summer myself and DS 3 AND DD 7 (at the time) went camping to a beautiful place in the South of England.

We had a woodland pitch and were surrounded by trees and a short wall with a steep hill behind it.

Anyway, cut this story short, in the middle of the night DD needed to pee and it was too dark to navigate to the toilet or see very much at all in fact. I led her outside of the tent and down a bit to pee in the bushes :/ bad momma She cleaned herself up using tissue paper and asked where she could put the used tissue, we had no bin to hand and I told her to pop it on the wall for the morning and I would clean it when the sun comes up.

Anyway the next morning I could see that the sheet of tissue had blown off the wall and into the trees below, no biggy I thought but didn't give it a 2nd thought.

Anyway, fast forward 1 year and I just emailed to book at the same campsite. Here is the reply I received:

"We wont be taking any bookings from you, as after you left last time, we had to clear up a lot of tissues and wet wipes from over the wall of the pitch. We had to climb over a pick off the tissues which were hanging from the branches. Not nice to do and dangerous as well."

I am MORTIFIED

It was only one sheet of paper, we certainly did not leave wet wipes and tissues behind unless daughter copied her terrible mummy and continued to do this on the other nights

AIBU to think it is a bit harsh banning us from the camp site?!

I detest littering and genuinely feel awful!

Maybe your DCs put more tissues etc. over the wall and you didn't know about it?

Sorry, but you should have taken a bag with you to put the tissue in.

wowfudge · 15/07/2014 16:44

Email them back and apologise if that's how you feel. Explain the one incident as far as you were aware.

Speak to your daughter and ask if she did this more than once.

But if you go camping and there is a toilet on site then go prepared and have torches/head torches so you don't find yourself in the same situation again.

hmc · 15/07/2014 16:45

I doubt the campsite were exaggerating - why would they refer to tissues and wet wipes in the plural if there was just one. Also, imo it was skanky to leave used toilet tissue on the wall over night. Why did you think that was a good idea!

3PacketsOfCrisps · 15/07/2014 16:48

Because I did not want to leave my young son alone - the toilet was a lot further than advertised. In hindisight camping was probably a bad idea!

And of course I have apologised - profusely!

It does sound like you made a genuine mistake as you went out to remove the tissue in the morning, however it does seem fairly obvious that it would have blown away by the morning. Confused

Unfortunately I don't think they are BU by refusing to take another booking, but maybe find out if your DC did leave tissues and wet wipes lying around more than once, and let them know if that was the case? And if they agree to a further booking, bring a bag for rubbish this time. Grin

KnackeredMuchly · 15/07/2014 16:50

Iget why you're annoyed you can't go back but theyre well within their rights to not want you back after they had to climb a tree and pick off wet loo roll. It must have been disgusting.

I'd email and apologise, don't excuse it, then find a new camp.

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 15/07/2014 16:51

Next time leave your wellies and a torch near to the entrance of the tent.

There's not really much excuse for weeing outside when they had toilets you could have used and then leaving (even just one) dirty tissue to be blown around the campsite. Yuck!

diddl · 15/07/2014 16:52

Well was it you/your kids or not?

You've put that you left one piece of tissue that blew into a tree (and you left it??)

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 15/07/2014 16:52

Just seen your update - if you don't want to leave a child alone in the tent you need to take a potty or bucket with a lid on.

adsy · 15/07/2014 16:54

Why didn't you take the used tissue back to the tent and deal with it in the norning Surely it's obvious it would blow away in the night?
Sorry, I think you were skanky

Catsmamma · 15/07/2014 16:54

Maybe you were not the only skanky camper person inconvenienced by the trek to the toilets? Possibly others were at it too?

But then I view 3*hotels as camping so what would I know? ;)

SauvignonBlanche · 15/07/2014 16:56

Eww, gross!
Another reason why I'd never go camping.

3PacketsOfCrisps · 15/07/2014 16:56

Lesson learnt. At 4am I wasn't thinking straight :(

Floggingmolly · 15/07/2014 17:02

That's seriously rank, actually; why did you have to wait for the sun to rise to clean up your used toilet paper? Hmm. Ffs!

3PacketsOfCrisps · 15/07/2014 17:11

Because it was too dark to look for bin bags!

OP posts:
Calloh · 15/07/2014 17:14

Poor you OP! I can totally see why you would do that and I know that hindisght is a brilliant thing so clearly you wouldn't leave a tissue around to blow away again. I made the mistake of camping as the only adult with two small children, in the early stage of pregnancy, in torrential rain having forgotten a bucket and completely, utterly, totally understand.

I don't think there's much you can do. As Cats said maybe others did it too or maybe your daughter did it again and didn't say anything to you, either way hopefully your apology will convince them of the truth and they'll change their mind!

However I am glad that they do ban people who genuinely leave rubbish around as it's pretty grim.

Fixitagaintomorrow · 15/07/2014 17:14

Surely you realised the distance between yourselves and the toilet long before it went dark?! The first thing I do wherever I go is check where the toilets are for dd, she wouldn't pee in a bush even if I told her to. Even if getting to the toilets really wasn't an option, as someone else has said, why not just take it back to the tent. I don't think you had any intention of getting it off the wall in the morning.

Why didn't you pick up the tissue?

Iusedtobelardy · 15/07/2014 17:22

Is it just me who thinks that's an overreaction to one piece of tissue?

or there's more to it

3PacketsOfCrisps · 15/07/2014 17:23

I was aware of the distance, and ensured everyone peed before bed and had no fluids after, these things happen! I did have intentions of cleaning it up the next morning!

OP posts:
3PacketsOfCrisps · 15/07/2014 17:23

heck where the toilets are for dd, she wouldn't pee in a bush even if I told her to

what is the relevance of this comment?

OP posts:
3PacketsOfCrisps · 15/07/2014 17:24

Why didn't you pick up the tissue

I was planning on clearing up the next morning

OP posts:
shouldnthavesaid · 15/07/2014 17:27

How on earth did they know it was you and your tent specifically? Were there no tents in walking distance? How come all the toilet paper blew in the same direction and landed in the same place?

And why did you not do what most campers do, and keep a bucket and bag in the tent, or at the very least, a torch? If it was so dark you couldn't see any bin bags, how did you manage to get to the toilet? I'm baffled.

Fixitagaintomorrow · 15/07/2014 17:28

My point was I'm aware that children need to pee at the most inconvenient times and so I always make sure I am able to get her to a toilet.
