Aibu to give my dc 3 weetabix?

Mumof3xox · 13/07/2014 07:32

Following on from the thread about a 3 year old weighing a little too much where several people have commented it's "crazy" to let a 3 year old eat 2.5 weetabix, and how they themselves as an adult would only eat one

I am now wondering Aibu to let my 5&6 year olds eat 3 each? Sometimes they follow it with a piece of toast or fruit

They are both healthy weights and tbh, in the past they have eaten 4/5 each. I have actually cut them down to three as it was costing a bomb!

Actually. Aibu that my 15 month old eats 2 weetabix sometimes?

Are we supposed to let kids go hungry at breakfast in case they get a bit tubby in their twenties then?

I've always had a monster appetite and remain totally average height and weight (when not pg) at 33.

Aeroflotgirl · 14/07/2014 14:29

I agree pomm, I would rather them have extra Weetabix shock horror, instead of being hungry 2 hours later and go forraging for junk. How fat can an extra big of Weetabix make a child. Madness, one would think they were having pizza and chips for breakfast!

pommedeterre · 14/07/2014 14:50

I thought weetabx and porridge = good as well!

Then cheerios.

Then everything else.

We're on the cheerios end of the scale currently.

My two year old eats two Weetabix, then 2 slices of toast. If I don't get the milk on it fast enough, she eats it dry.

It's decent food, it's not like you're giving them sugary stuff. Breakfast is important.

I didn't realise there was a weetabix law Grin

My kids have two each. They are nine eight five and four.

ChickenMe · 14/07/2014 15:35

Not keen on boxed cereals - they are junk food. IMO of course. If someone was to eat three weetabix and then still require toast as still hungry I would be concerned that maybe the meal was lacking in protein and fat. It's not really a balanced meal as the main part of the meal is processed carbs which tend to cause increased appetite and issues with blood sugar levels. In my experience, adding protein eg two eggs on toast would slow things down and you'd be fuller for longer. Plus eggs are more nutritious.

Trazzletoes · 14/07/2014 15:55

My DCs flatly refuse eggs in any form except cake

Aeroflotgirl · 14/07/2014 15:55

Chicken Hmm are you a dietician! Very sweeping statement!

Trazzletoes · 14/07/2014 15:57

Actually DS has a dietician. She couldn't give 2 hoots about his Weetabix consumption.

Aeroflotgirl · 14/07/2014 16:10

It's just getting silly isent it!

pommedeterre · 14/07/2014 16:14

The thought of adding in cooking eggs into my already full morning routine makes me want to weep.

MrsKoala · 14/07/2014 16:26

I use weetabix to sneak as much milk into DS as possible, as apart from that and a little cheese, i can get no dairy into him.

IHaveBrilloHair · 14/07/2014 16:30

Dd has 74 avocados with cashew nut butter and a shovel full of kale.

Trazzletoes · 14/07/2014 16:33

...and my toaster is broken. So not really on to eggs on toast as a winner here...

Thurlow · 14/07/2014 16:33

It's like the worry about kids eating too much fruit. I mean yes, in an ideal world they would live on oatcakes, steamed chicken and asparagus, but in the real world surely anyone would rather kids ate a lot of fruit than they ate crisps and chocolate? Confused

ThatBloodyWoman · 14/07/2014 16:47

IHave you have got me drooling with the thought of avocados and cashew nut butter.

I like toast and peanut butter for breakfast given half a chance.

Badvoc2 · 14/07/2014 17:08

Porridge done in microwave - 2 mins
Omelette - 2 mins
Pancakes - if batter done night before - 2 mins per pan full
Fruit salad - 2 mins
Toast - 2 mins
It's really not that much of a faff.
My ds1 will not, and has never eaten fruit :(
Ds2 otoh would live on it and is a vegetarian.
As long as they get a balance, it's fine.

Badvoc2 · 14/07/2014 17:08

...and yes, I think toast and Nutella is a perfectly acceptable b fast! :)

andmyunpopularopionis · 14/07/2014 17:36

I agree with youoryou

DS used to be thin (but a big boy - biggest in his class) and eat 3-4 Weetabix each morning. But the large portions made his appetite huge and he wanted more and more and more. Then he started growing sideways and he was always hungry.

He now has a 50g portion a very nutritious (imported) cereal for breakfast each morning. He is NOT allowed any more and he is losing the weight. He is also no longer hungry at 10am as he was with Weetabix.

I don't think Weetabix is bad but I don't think it's the best thing for growing kids. I did.. I don't anymore.

I do however think kids are different and some can get away with things that other cannot.

My 3yo only has one with half a banana and strawberries, but he does get a snack at nursery at 10am.

mumminio · 14/07/2014 19:25

I think the comments about overfeeding pertained to children who were already overweight. It's a different situation if your children are with a normal range.

HavanaSlife · 14/07/2014 19:44

Agree andmy ds1 was a very skinny child who ate loads until he hit 9 or 10 and then he started putting on weight.

NoodleOodle · 14/07/2014 20:19

I've never been able to eat breakfast as it comes back up in to my mouth, which then makes me sick. I fought and fought with my DD to eat breakfast for years, because her teachers kept telling me off. Even got her a massive bottle of Gaviscon from GP to stop the morning regurge. It didn't help. Now I've stopped nagging and she just has a drink and maybe an apple or a plum like me. Some people front load, others get hungry in the evening. As long as it all balances out over the week I think it's fine.

I feel like I've just made a big confession - My name's Noodle and we don't eat breakfast in my house.
