Aibu to give my dc 3 weetabix?

Mumof3xox · 13/07/2014 07:32

Following on from the thread about a 3 year old weighing a little too much where several people have commented it's "crazy" to let a 3 year old eat 2.5 weetabix, and how they themselves as an adult would only eat one

I am now wondering Aibu to let my 5&6 year olds eat 3 each? Sometimes they follow it with a piece of toast or fruit

They are both healthy weights and tbh, in the past they have eaten 4/5 each. I have actually cut them down to three as it was costing a bomb!

Actually. Aibu that my 15 month old eats 2 weetabix sometimes?

Genuinely surprised at peoples dc having 8 weatabix, surely that lot doesn't even fit in the bowl!

As an adult I think 2 is a normal sized serving, 1 is stingy, 3 is ok if you're hungry.

SaveTheMockingBird · 13/07/2014 21:24

My dcs go mad for weetabix when we have it as we hardly buy any cereal at all. Even then they only eat one (3 and 5)....the 5yr old sometimes ask for another one but leaves most of it. They will have other food afterwards though.

HavanaSlife · 13/07/2014 21:24

I must be a wicked mum ds2 is 11 and has 2 with fruit, i would be saying no if he wanted 8

Thurlow · 13/07/2014 21:35

My skinny little 2.5yo has two weetabix and will often follow it with some fruit as well.

Some people and kids just prefer some meals to be bigger than others. So, for us, DD eats a BIG breakfast so we go with it - but one other meal that day she'll just play with.

I always eat 3 Grin

Am I wrong but aren't weetabix and porridge two breakfast cereals that are on the better choice for breakfast category?

Dd has 2 with banana, honey and milk.

MrsKoala · 13/07/2014 23:55

Cripes. DS had 2 weetabix and half a banana for breakfast at 9mo. He's now 21mo and has 2, a banana AND toast. (He also has a 2 egg spinach and cheese omelette and half a tin of beans followed by fruit for lunch and a dinner of a piece of salmon, mash, cauli cheese, broccoli and carrots followed by fruit and custard for pudding. As well as 2 choc chip cookies as a snack. Shock )

I was raised on weetabix and the rule was two, and one more if you are very hungry. My mother would have been very angry if any of us took eight! She would have thought it greedy and selfish as that would have meant less for everyone else.

My children aren't very keen breakfast eaters, getting them to eat anythign before they have properly worked up is always a struggle.

dh and I like birchers porridge. We have ours with yogurt and whatever soft fruit we have in hand. I also like oats with diced apples and walnuts and milk in the morning.

RaspberryRuffle · 14/07/2014 00:40

I can't finish 2 weetabix! I thought DH was a human bin because he has 3. Hope he doesn't see this thread!

Happy36 · 14/07/2014 01:11

If he eats it and enjoys it, there is no problem.

Trazzletoes · 14/07/2014 07:09

You won't fill hungry young bellies with highly processed crap am I missing something here? If you eat it on its own (who would?) it has a moderate GI index, and if you have it with milk it's low GI.

I feel your description is a little unfair. It may not be what you choose to feed your child but of all the potential breakfasts out there, it's not that bad. And certainly not comparable to, say, Frosties, or even Bran Flakes which market themselves as healthy but are secretly the devil's work.

makeminea6x · 14/07/2014 07:26

Thanks allthe sounds yummy and I'll try it.

MummyPig24 · 14/07/2014 07:33

My 4 and 6 year olds have two weetabix and fruit. They would only have one piece of toast though.

My DS eats like a fully grown man. He also never stops. So probably burns like 4000 calories a day or something. He's none stop.

You can see his ribs he's so thin although he eats loads. His paediatrician says that that's healthy.

As long as they aren't over weight I don't see the problem

pombearsforbrunch · 14/07/2014 08:36

I have 4 teens (3 boys, 1 girl), and one box of Wheetabix = one sitting at breakfast. No idea who eats what, but there's never any left for me. The kids are very fit and sporty, and not at all overweight. As long so the kids are active, they can eat whatever they like. I'd rather my kids had 6 wheetabix, than a bowl of coco pops.

pombearsforbrunch · 14/07/2014 08:39

Good point below about the cost of food. Our wheetabix consumption isn't a daily event!

MrsKoala · 14/07/2014 08:50

What i don't understand is if your dc are only eating 1 weetabix for breakfast, how do they get their calorific daily needs in? Toddlers need about 40 calories per lb they weigh. So a 30lb child needs 1200. 2 weetabix with full milk is about 200cals (possibly 250 if you have loads of milk). That still leaves about a 1000 calories for them to get thru in a day. I really struggle to make sure DS has 1200-1400 a day, even when he has a big breakfast.

BellaVita · 14/07/2014 08:59

Why do people gets so pissy about how many weetabix one can eat?

If they are hungry and otherwise fit and healthy, let them have three weetabix.

newrecruit · 14/07/2014 09:02

My 8 year old can put away extraordinary amounts of food. His record for Weetabix is 6.

If they are hungry, let them eat it. As long as they don't also have lashings of sugar on them, or lots of sweets etc throughout the day, why can e the harm.

I would be tempted to give them full fat milk though to fill them up a bit more.

newrecruit · 14/07/2014 09:06

Also, I do think a little 'only on Mumset' perspective is needed.

Yes to your oats and walnuts but there are children going to school with only a can of coke and a bag of crisps for breakfast. Hmm

MrsKoala · 14/07/2014 09:13

When i worked in a school the breakfast a la mode was red bull and monster munch...mmmmm Hmm

tumbletumble · 14/07/2014 10:11

Why do people gets so pissy about how many weetabix one can eat?

I think people are using Weetabix as an indicator of the rest of tha day's eating. So they are assuming that a child who eats 4 Weetabix also has, for example, a massive plate of pasta for supper rather than a normal portion. That's often not the case though - some kids just eat a lot at breakfast.

2boys1girlNoPeace · 14/07/2014 10:29

My 8 year old DCs often eat 3/4 weetabix
They have always been hungry boys though.
They are perfectly healthy in weight.
My 2 yo DD will sometimes eat 1, maybe another half after that if she is hungry, but she can go through 4 yogurts in one sitting. Again, perfectly healthy weight for her height and age.

Oh, my boys also went through a whole box of 36 between them one morning last summer (age 7) !! Then still had all their lunch and dinner, plus snacking in between! pigs
