Ok so it's great film, good story my kids love it BUT whoever they picked to sing are flipin aweful. Screechy, nasel twang and shouty. Such a shame as the songs are (as we all know) are really good. Next time you hear the songs close your eyes and actually listen to the voices.... ouch!
Shock

Frozen, Mama Mia the movie, Les Mis the movie.

Hid.e.ous.

IloveJudgeJudy · 13/07/2014 12:58

YANBU at all. I was so looking forward to Frozen. Bought it on Blu-Ray, got the family to set a date to watch it together. Well.. I/we were so underwhelmed. I usually like Disney cartoons, but I was so disappointed. I don't like Let it go at all and DD keeps playing it to annoy me.

So, in answer to your question, no, YANBU to think that the singing is terrible, but imo it's the whole film that's rubbish. Don't like the plot. I think it's very thin and ridiculous.

Bearbehind · 13/07/2014 13:01

YADNBU OP, the high parts in the main song are screechy and over sung- I think it sounds awful.

SiennaBlake · 13/07/2014 13:09

I love that axis of awesome thing aaaah

ithoughtofitfirst · 13/07/2014 13:09

I've never seen it but I imagine it's something that would make me turn inside out from cringing so hard.

Bearbehind · 13/07/2014 13:10

Don't like the plot. I think it's very thin and ridiculous.

I totally agree- I'd heard all the hype before I saw it and was totally underwhelmed by it.

I kept thinking there'd be a big twist or something as it was so poor but no- it was a real let down.

AntoinetteCosway · 13/07/2014 13:13

Idina Menzel is my ultimate girl crush and has the most amazing voice EVER.

NadiaWadia · 13/07/2014 13:16

Agree with Antoinette. I was lucky enough to see her in 'Wicked' when it opened in London, and she was amazing. Cast members came on for a question and answer session after the show, and she was lovely.

DontPutMeDownForCardio · 13/07/2014 13:23

I thought the plot was weak. Certainly no strong feminist message. It would have been better if they had stuck closer to the snow queen.

Didactylos · 13/07/2014 13:27

yanbu
hate the music, the singing and the inexplicably poor plot line
liked the reindeer tho

EnchanciaAnthem · 13/07/2014 13:30

Shock Idina is amazing!

UncleT · 13/07/2014 14:05

Don't get it. The songs are hammy and thoroughly unoriginal, nothing special whatsoever. I think the over-the-top cutesy 'charm' has distracted things hugely.

AntoinetteCosway · 13/07/2014 15:00

Nadia I saw her in Wicked in London too and thought she was utterly incredible. I don't think there's anyone else working in musical theatre at the moment who's a patch on her in terms of talent. She was wonderful in Rent too.

Provencalroseparadox · 13/07/2014 15:29

YABVU

Idina Menzel rocks

GatoradeMeBitch · 13/07/2014 21:47

There are some parts of her singing I don't like, like the way she mispronounces 'fractures' and how the 'the perfect girl is gone' is slurred, it's sounds like 'lerr perfect girl'. And the big finishing note is kind of bellowed, like she's shouting to someone instead of singing. When I first heard it, I genuinely thought I was listening to a demo version.

That said though, she has a nice sounding voice, and the song is catchy as hell!

whitepuddingsupper · 13/07/2014 21:53

like the way she mispronounces fractures

Isn't it meant to be fractals, not fractures?

CocktailQueen · 13/07/2014 21:55

I don't like the breathing! She breathes in the middle of phrases - awful. Also nasal and screechy in bits. I like the one with the deeper voice best.

hiccupgirl · 13/07/2014 21:56

I absolutely love Frozen and the songs but I have to admit (in a teeny little voice) that the end of Let it Go is very screechy and I think she does overdo it.

Love. Kirsten Bell's singing and the 2 songs they sing together though.

ithoughtofitfirst · 13/07/2014 22:03

cocktailqueen like gasp Matt gasp Bellamy gasp lead singer of Muse?!

I don't really know what I'd rather him do though tbf. Certainly wouldn't want him suffocate.

Provencalroseparadox · 13/07/2014 22:03

Yes definitely fractals

JohnFarleysRuskin · 13/07/2014 22:06

The story is great - for Disney (ie schmaltzy crap)

But I did like the songs!

MajesticWhine · 13/07/2014 22:11

great word: fractal. I challenge you all to use this word in a sentence tomorrow.

chocomochi · 13/07/2014 22:16

Shock YABU! Think the singing is great and portray Elsa and Anna very well! Have to admit, I loved Wicked and Rent too!

trufflesnout · 13/07/2014 22:16

She's not good exactly, but she's a stage musical singer and that style is shouty, lots of stage singers seem to think shouty=good. It's on par with all Disney singing though, nothing especially dreadful.

FiveExclamations · 13/07/2014 22:18

Can I ask out of interest, those who like Idina Menzel who else do you like? And same question for those who don't like her.

I love her voice, Defying Gravity gives me chills, but I'm becoming increasingly convinced that peoples ears are tuned differently (lack of musical education in my case probably).

As a sample of what I like: Idina Menzel, Florence Welch, Doris Day (My ears definitely like show tunes), Billie Joe Armstrong, Alanis Morisette, Eddie Vedder, Kate Bush and Annie Lennox.

There is a "belting" quality to all of those I suppose.
