To be annoyed with my friend saying she's broke all the time?

Glastogirl · 12/07/2014 21:43

Every time I see her she always seems to mention how broke she is and how she is scraping by.

I saw her yesterday and she has just bought a £7000 watch!!! Shock When I said I thought you were broke she said she is and her current account is empty but this money was from their savings account Hmm.

I find it quite insulting, she knows we are in financial difficulty at the moment and don't have any savings so if anyone is broke it's us not her!

I'm sorry if you think IABU but if you can afford to buy a watch for that much money then you're not broke and shouldn't say you are all the time.

Not planning to meet up again any time soon!

Having scraped by for 20 years to save for my 27k diamond bracelet, I sympathise. I now have the bracelet but I live in a shed. Life is SO UNFAIR!

Only1scoop · 12/07/2014 22:12

Bet she drives a white Range Rover Grin

Bearbehind · 12/07/2014 22:13

From the poster who wouldnt know a £7k watch if it bit them on the behind

Ok- without the aid of google, please find me a £7k watch.

Then find me a £6.5k watch that is guaranteed to be worth £13k in 10 years.

monkeyfacegrace · 12/07/2014 22:14

Yes, they do appreciate. Very well.

They appreciate with the cost of new.

Rolex generally have a 7-12% price increase every year. They now haven't had one for 4 years due to the economy, which means they will probably now have two large ones within 6 months.

It's a very good time to buy one.

Even if he doesn't make much cash, he won't lose any. And he gets a lovely collection of watches to wear. Better than having it sat in a bank as far as I'm concerned.

Maybe your friend has just thought the same?

No Hmm do your own research

monkeyfacegrace · 12/07/2014 22:16

bear he is considering a Rolex Yacht Master 2 at the moment. They are currently sat around the 24k mark due to the current rrp.

If two price rises happen this year as predicted, he will make 14% in a matter of months.

Same as all retail, it's a gamble, but without taking a risk you don't make money.

80sMum · 12/07/2014 22:16

I'd be scared of wearing it in case it got lost, damaged or stolen. Much prefer my little watch, which was £8.99!
I don't know the rate of appreciation of 2nd hand watches, but I would be surprised if they are worth double after 10 years. Possibly if it's a special edition, but an ordinary bog standard 2nd hand watch, probably not.

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 12/07/2014 22:17

Patek phillippe watches, Rolex, Cartier, anything with a shed load of diamonds on the face. £7k watches aren't hard to find if you walk into a high end jeweller/department store

Watches will appreciate in value just like any other type of jewellery may do depending on condition, style, materials etc

Bearbehind · 12/07/2014 22:17

No do your own research

Ahh- the classic - I can't prove you wrong so I'll put the onus on you argument- convincing Hmm

swooosh · 12/07/2014 22:20

You will only make money if you plan to actually SELL them though.

I have a bag which has doubled in value, if I sold it I would get current retail price. Retail price goes up every 6 months. I would NEVER sell it.

ThePinkOcelot · 12/07/2014 22:21

It pisses me off when people always go on about being skint when they clearly aren't! Walk a mile in my shoes arsehole! Also, I find these people boring to be with!

BalloonSlayer · 12/07/2014 22:21

YANBU but just make sure that every time she pleads poverty in future, look sympathetic and say loudly "Ah that's a shame, DFriend, but, can you tell me what's the time, on your SEVEN THOUSAND POUND WATCH?"

STOPwiththehahaheheloling · 12/07/2014 22:21

Ahh- the classic - I can't prove you wrong so I'll put the onus on you argument-

Seriously? I could direct you to a 7k watch in less than 30 seconds, they are not difficult to find. Whether you choose to believe they exist or not. Why on earth would me showing you one of thousands of £7k watches help your 'argument' in any way? Confused

fuzzpig · 12/07/2014 22:21

Next time she says she's skint, reply "Awww you poor thing. Have you considered selling your watch?" :o

Owllady · 12/07/2014 22:21

They are mega bucks bearbehind. My dh used to work in Saudi and the hotels gave their own watch establishments for all the wealthy businessmen/tourists
My husband was a paltry engineer though :o

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 12/07/2014 22:21

Watches can go for an extraordinary amount of money

I worked with someone who had a £100k watch. It was fugly as hell and he probably paid more in insurance a month than I paid for my watch! But he could afford it.

If you think of watches as jewellery with a bit of master engineering it gives a better sense of the pricing

Bearbehind · 12/07/2014 22:21

bear he is considering a Rolex Yacht Master 2 at the moment. They are currently sat around the 24k mark due to the current rrp.

Anyone who understands even basic economics will appreciate that the current selling price of an item will factor in both current and future supply and demand to a certain extent.

Yes- it might appreciate by 100% in 10 years but that is by no means guaranteed.

Scousadelic · 12/07/2014 22:23

It is fine to buy a £7k watch if you have money and it is no hardship but you are not broke if you can do that comfortably. Your friend is either not broke or incredibly stupid and living beyond her means

Owllady · 12/07/2014 22:24

The divide between the rich and poor is vulgar isnt it
Sigh
And the government engineer the arguing between the poor and the muddled as some kind if smokescreen

weatherall · 12/07/2014 22:24

I know 2 women like this, claim poverty because of their low incomes but have thousands in savings.

My isa has £6 in it.

Bearbehind · 12/07/2014 22:24

Seriously? I could direct you to a 7k watch in less than 30 seconds, they are not difficult to find. Whether you choose to believe they exist or not. Why on earth would me showing you one of thousands of £7k watches help your 'argument' in any way?

I'm not doubting for a second they exist. My watch is certainly not an £8 argos special- I'm disputing whether most people would recognise one if they saw it and where this miraculous 100% return on investment over 10 years comes from.

monkeyfacegrace · 12/07/2014 22:26

Oh it's like banging my head against a brick wall.

No, nothing is guaranteed. But it's not like the OPs friend has just pissed 7k up the wall on a holiday, or a night out. She is in effect just wearing her savings on her wrist. It makes no bloody difference if it's in the bank or she bought the watch.

I agree with the original point that no, she isn't skint. But don't think of it as she has spent the money iyswim.

BeckAndCall · 12/07/2014 22:26

There are posts of watches that cost £7k. But you don't buy them if you're broke.

Your friend is taking the piss, OP.

STOPwiththehahaheheloling · 12/07/2014 22:27
Confused

Well then what exactly would me showing you a £7k watch prove?

Surely you would have been better to ask if anyone has a 10 (or older) year old watch that cost £7k and is now worth at least £14k?

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 12/07/2014 22:27

The op has clarified that the friend told her the £7k watch was worth just that so she didn't need to be able to spot it herself
