Funny, DS was having a go learning it today too. Not for 3 hours though !

Green bananas - I agree. Isn't it great though, kids should sing !

I think it's something you either can or can't do. I'm not a piano player, but I started off playing by ear on a piano when I was five, only picking out the melody with my right hand. I play flute and I can play anything by ear after one or two listens. Easier when you only have to do one note at a time. Wink

pianodoodle · 09/07/2014 22:25

I worked out a version of Duelling Banjos on piano - it works pretty well :D

IAmTheGodOfTitsAndWine · 09/07/2014 22:29

THAT WAS NOT A STEALTH BOAST, by the way.

VolDEmortIsOnMyLaminateList · 09/07/2014 22:30

Isit you've made me think now...

You can usually hear and recognise popular chord progressions: for example, C, Am, F, G, and so on. The first few melody notes should give you an idea of what key it's in. See if you can play along with the song-even if it's only the melody part. Then try different chords around prominant notes...if it's a long 'A' for example, play around with Am, D, Gbm...till it sounds right.

Fuck a duck, that's an essay!

Do we all work out left or right hand first? Usually left for me.

I have a digital so I put the headphones on when I want to play daft stuff.

If anyone heard it they'd realise I'd finished my "important lesson planning" and start disturbing me Grin

curiousgeorgie · 09/07/2014 22:30

You know those tiny little bells you get in Christmas crackers and you're supposed to each get a number and play a line of a song together?

I used to be a floor manager for a shopping channel and we were selling them... I spent 2 hours working out how to play Katy Perry's Firework on them for the live sell.

Good times... Wink

VolDEmortIsOnMyLaminateList · 09/07/2014 22:32

Iam I play flute too! Not very well, though! Grin

Just played the "Prisoner, Cell Block H" theme... I need to get a life...

vol I would work out the melody first then fill in with chords on the left hand until I get the feel of it, then finally add in any proper bass line.

Incidentally, I think I an the only parent of an 8 year old in the country who doesn't know that song from Frozen!

VolDEmortIsOnMyLaminateList · 09/07/2014 22:44

Treacle see the video I posted! Has anyone seen the one of a man singing it in Disney voices? Grin

Anyone fancy 'Skyfall'..Cm,Ab,F and G... Repeat forever! Enjoy :) (a variation of the C, Am, F and G pattern)Smile

VolDEmortIsOnMyLaminateList · 09/07/2014 23:09

still I once had to play 'knocking on Heaven's Door' for a gig- just the basic chords. Man was I bored shitless!

stillenacht1 · 09/07/2014 23:31

Oh I bet... C,Am,F and G make me want to rip my face off!ConfusedConfused

Ericaequites · 10/07/2014 02:57

I am in awe of people who can play by ear. My family is the sort who know the National Anthem tune because it ends with "Play ball!" Or "Drivers, start your engines!"

VolDEmortIsOnMyLaminateList · 10/07/2014 07:44

still I don't mind singing a song like that...a decent harmony, etc, can transform a song...but playing it? Nah!

I just googled the free sheet musicGrin

VolDEmortIsOnMyLaminateList · 10/07/2014 11:29

Dame free sheet music? I'm fighting temptation now, because if I look, and find that I'm doing it 'wrong' I'll be gutted...don't want to cwy on my birthday Grin

It is in Em though, right?

isit I think in terms of intervals. I can hear the progression of the melody in my head and know if it's a 5th or a 4th or whatever.
