To think he shouldn't do his shopping and ride home in rush hour??!!

There is a man who lives just outside my town who comes to do his weekly shop on a horse. Seriously! I have no issue with this. But. He then rides home, slowly, on the main road at rush hour. It causes chaos.
AIBU to think he should time his jaunt on his trusty steed for a different time of day?

What does he do with the horse while he is in the shop? How does he carry the shopping on the horse?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 08/07/2014 20:10

YABU. unless specifically restricted, horses have just as much right to use the road as cars.

Flisspaps · 08/07/2014 20:12

Perhaps that's the only time he has free?

TessOfTheFurbyvilles · 08/07/2014 20:14

Horses and their owners were using the roads of this country for hundreds of years before cars, or indeed any other kind of vehicle or transport were using them.

Roads aren't just there for those on two, four or more wheels.

ScrambledSmegs · 08/07/2014 20:15

Crikey, I hope the horse is ok. Must be stressful for it in rush hour.

hoobypickypicky · 08/07/2014 20:17

YABU, ItsAllGoingToBeFine has it in a nutshell. The horse has as much right to be there as an other road user. For all we know this could be the only convenient time for the rider.

Lots of vehicles cause delays on the main roads. Tractors, caravans, learner drivers. Do you drive, OP? Did you not cause delays when you were slowly driving then?

PuddingAndHotMilk · 08/07/2014 20:21

Tuscon - he ties it up outside. I've seen it a few times and it seems happy enough. I might take an apple next time I go.

OP posts:
PuddingAndHotMilk · 08/07/2014 20:22

Hooby, I don't drive slowly. I drive at an appropriate speed for the road Smile

There is a man near to us that drives his horse to the pub every night (with cart) it's a worry when I hear him trotting back late at night, last time I checked horses don't have headlights.

I am sure it's annoying if you get stuck, how about you change your route?

hoobypickypicky · 08/07/2014 20:30

I'm sure you do now, pudding. I'm just suggesting that this might not have always been the case, when you were a learner driver. :)

Even if that doesn't apply to you that must apply to a significant number of learners (and tractors, and caravans etc etc). Should they too be expected to keep off the roads at certain times so as not to cause delays and inconvenience drivers of the faster vehicles?

The chances are that, for a horse, that road user is also going at an appropriate speed. Grin

BTW, I don't know if you're serious about the apple but if you are then please don't! It might make the horse ill!

NB, does it show that I'm a bit envious of the rider? Grin

Iflyaway · 08/07/2014 20:35

Does he bring a pooper scooper in case the horse does a dump while being tied up outside the shop? Grin

PuddingAndHotMilk · 08/07/2014 20:35

Hooby, I didn't go on the roads in rush hour until I was able to drive at a reasonable and safe speed.
I knew I'd get some sanctimonious BS about the apple Confused

OP posts:
PuddingAndHotMilk · 08/07/2014 20:39

VSeth - it's a worry, isn't it!
Ifly - I didn't see a pooper scooper so I assume he's hoping it'll wash away soon enough! I wonder if the fines for dog poo apply... Wink

ThePinkOcelot · 08/07/2014 20:41

I also knew you would get sanctimonious clap trap about horses having as much right on the road as cars!! Well when horse owners start paying road tax and insurance I might agree!
YANBU OP

Pixel · 08/07/2014 20:44

I do pay insurance actually which is more than cyclists do.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 08/07/2014 20:46

Car owners pay insurance because of the death and destruction they cause. Very few cyclists kill people.

And there is no such thing as "road tax" we all pay through general taxation.

Ohwhatbliss · 08/07/2014 20:47

There is no such thing as "road tax", it is vehicle excise duty the rate of which is based on emissions. Also, vehicle excuse duty does not find highway repairs. Ill informed argument there.

smellyfishead · 08/07/2014 20:49

well pinkcat, they were there first!! cars only came much much later on! and most responsible riders do have insurance, however, don't let me get started on cyclists.......

gordyslovesheep · 08/07/2014 20:49

oh I knew there'd be some incorrect boswellox about 'road tax' ...which isn't a thing

OP he's doing it to annoy you - try leaving work 20 mins later next week

TessOfTheFurbyvilles · 08/07/2014 20:55

Any horse rider with an ounce of sense has insurance, both personal accident and public liability.

I have to laugh when people who clearly know nothing about owning a horse, come on here and spout drivel about not having insurance.

And the road tax thing has been sufficiently covered.

Pixel · 08/07/2014 20:57

Actually now I come to think of it the rush hour could be the safest time. Round this way the roads are gridlocked and the traffic never moves very fast anyway. At different times of the day you are more likely to get the impatient gits and boy racers zipping past.

His horse is obviously pretty chilled out though, can't say I'd like to try it myself.

Joysmum · 08/07/2014 21:16

Didn't take long for the usual misinformed bollocks about 'road tax' to be spouted Grin

TucsonGirl · 08/07/2014 21:18

Is it a crime to be drunk in charge of a horse? I know its a crime to be cycling drunk.

hoobypickypicky · 08/07/2014 21:26

"I knew I'd get some sanctimonious BS about the apple"

Did you mean to sound so rude? My post was lighthearted but, sanctimonious or not, there are several reasons why a horse should not be given food without guidance from the owner.

Goblinchild · 08/07/2014 21:35

'Is it a crime to be drunk in charge of a horse?'
Yes, a previous boyfriend got done for it. He was asleep, the horse was taking him home and a passing police car noticed.
