To think that people should stop using the word 'methinks' to complete a sentence.

Disclaimer: Lighthearted

Is 'methinks' the most over used word of 2014? Are there any other words that seem to be overused at the moment and are becoming really annoying?

It's like the new 'random'.

I find the ubiquitous 'So' at the start of a sentence even more offensive. It seems to be a favoured response to interview -style questions.

'So, we've been in business for five years...'

'So, epi-genetics is the study of...'

'So, in order to make a rainbow cake..

YANBU. It's the equivalent of sticking signs on yourself saying "I am a total twat"

Icimoi · 04/07/2014 00:11

I agree with that one too, Elderflowergranita. Why use a totally unnecessary extra word which isn't even correct in that context?

I always think of UKIP voters as saying stuff like "methinks"

FederationPresidentBarryFife · 04/07/2014 16:10

ooo YANBU. I cannot stand methinks. Oh and 'doth'. And 'tis.

Grin to Goldengirl - can just see Farage now "methinks we doth vote 'nay' for Europe, tis a betrayal of the English folk"

gertiegusset · 04/07/2014 18:02

NU at all, it's a bit wanky isn't it.

ithoughtofitfirst · 04/07/2014 18:11

Ergh 'tis. And twas.

Shudder.

TheLovelyBoots · 04/07/2014 18:22

I think inevitably it makes the speaker sound stupid. Lofty origins aside.

MardyBra · 05/07/2014 00:02

Yep. Checklist:

Methinks
tis
twas
Doth
Yay or nay ( a current thread titled in baby names)

Elderflowergranita · 05/07/2014 00:06

'Anyhoo'.

MardyBra · 05/07/2014 00:19

Verily
Forthwith

MuttonCadet · 05/07/2014 00:25

I heard it from pretentious mates at school in the 80's, never heard it since.

MardyBra · 05/07/2014 08:46

A lot of people use it on MN though.

MardyBra · 07/07/2014 09:25

From discussions of the day:

"Toddler music group - harmonising: yay or nay?"

Hmm Wink

MardyBra · 07/07/2014 14:56

Ha Ha. They've edited it! Grin

badtime · 07/07/2014 15:11

There are worse things than 'methinks', no?

(I hate that ^ 'no?' Even if I agree with the person who says it, it makes me want to go 'You're right - NO!')
