Driving too fast

AIBU to moan at my (D)P for riding his motorbike at 90mph (even if only for 'a few seconds on a perfectly straight and empty road') with my 10YR OLD DS ON THE BACK!!!!!
He doesn't seem to think he's done anything wrong.

There are speed limits for a reason

Handsoff7 · 02/07/2014 20:39

On a motorbike, YANBU

ICanSeeTheSun · 02/07/2014 20:41

I hope your ds has full protective clothing and his own fitted helmet.

90 is ridiculous and I will be saying the 10 year old will not be going on the bike again unless your fuckwit of a partner learns to abide by traffic laws.

scurryfunge · 02/07/2014 20:46

DottyDooRidesAgain · 02/07/2014 20:47

Your DP is an idiot.

YANBU.

AnyFucker · 02/07/2014 20:47

Your partner is a cock

OberonTheHopeful · 02/07/2014 21:10

YANBU, I've seen some really frightening videos about the exponential way stopping distances increase with speed.

mumtosome61 · 02/07/2014 21:13

YANBU.

Don't care if it's quiet, dark, 3am in the morning, straight road, empty, all the excuses under the sun - it's dangerous and there is a limit for a reason. I'm all for experiencing things, but a 10 year old may lack to ability to make an informed choice without being influenced.

What if something had come out in the road? No straight road is immune from that.

whilewildeisonmine · 02/07/2014 21:15

It's people like him who give bikers a bad name.

MissMilbanke · 02/07/2014 21:15

If this is not a joke then your do is a knob end

Why ? Just why?

Stratter5 · 02/07/2014 21:15

I'd be fucking furious if anyone I knew did that. Let alone with a child on board. Just how fucking stupid is he?

RainbowsStars · 02/07/2014 21:18

YANBU - far from it.

DoJo · 02/07/2014 21:33

YABU if all you do is moan. I would be tempted to insist that he sell the bike if he cannot be trusted to behave appropriately with a fucking 10 year old on the back. What a twat sack.

Stratter5 · 02/07/2014 21:35

I would leave a partner over something like this, in my eyes it's unforgivable

HotDogJumpingFrogAlburquerque · 02/07/2014 21:46

I'm thinking organ donors.

I'm sorry, I know this is your son your talking about, not to mention your P (although that part could be Darwinian) but really. Neither of them wI'll stand a chance if something goes wrong.

And your 10 year old can't make an informed decision.

angelohsodelight · 02/07/2014 21:58

Why are you allowing your ds on the bike?

supersop60 · 02/07/2014 22:21

I'm usually happy for my ds to go on the bike - sometimes he gets picked up from school - it's only a mile away and mostly residential area.He has a padded jacket and helmet, and he's tall for his age so he can reach the footrests etc.
Tonight, my dp took him to macd's which is about 10 mins away on a dual carriageway. It wasn't till they got home and ds said 'Daddy went 90 miles an hour' that my blood ran cold.
DP is an experienced rider and has a large ex-police motorbike (well maintained, very safe), but he is also a boundary bender, and went too far this time.
Thanks for your input - he knows I'm furious. I'm wondering whether to ban ds going on the bike altogether.

gobbin · 02/07/2014 22:26

Upright, straight line, 90mph isn't going to kill anyone on a bike. Speed itself isn't a killer.
What your DP has done has been to take a risk which could result in an accident.

As a biker, have I ridden at 90mph on a straight road? Of course, that's part of the thrill of riding. Would I do this with my partner's 10 yr old son on the back? Absolutely not.

I wonder why you allowed your child to ride? It would suggest that he is already bike-aware and maybe has the helmet and clothing, though moto-cross is more suitable for this age group. If he wasn't wearing gear bought and fitted for him then you really need to question why you allowed him on the back. The issue here is not just your DPs riding.

Oldraver · 02/07/2014 22:26

Yep I wouldn't like to allow him on the bike again. How you police it I dont know

Jollyphonics · 02/07/2014 22:27

Holy shit I would be beyond furious.

I remember hearing a Jeremy Vine programme about speeding. A woman rang in whose husband had always been a fast but safe driver, very experienced, very controlled, but very fast. They'd always argued about it but she'd learned to accept it. He took their son out for a drive one day, crashed his car and killed them both.

Jollyphonics · 02/07/2014 22:30

I disagree gobbin - if you're going at 90 on a straight road with no other traffic but you hit a stone or small hole in the road, you can crash. Someone I knew did that, and died.

Susyb30 · 02/07/2014 22:36

I can't believe you are actually asking if yabu..your dp sounds like an immature idiot. I would never allow this. Tell him no if he wants to risk his own life and do this fine..but how dare he risk your sons. I cant stand idiots like him on the road..a danger for everyone.

Susyb30 · 02/07/2014 22:40

I would also leave a partner like this.

Plomino · 02/07/2014 22:40

It might only have been for a few seconds . It takes a split second for a person to die . Take your own life in your hands if you must , but gamble your kids ? Not in my lifetime .

But then I spend a substantial part of my life dealing with the aftermath , so I'm biased . Just a few weeks ago I didn't even make it into work as I ended up dealing with a very serious accident where a motorcyclist got thrown over 30 metres from his bike . He's lucky to be here at all , and he wasn't even speeding .

EssexMummy123 · 02/07/2014 23:00

I don't think it's ok for your 10 year old to be on the back of the bike, your OH might be very experienced but there are a lot of idiot drivers out there and in an accident your 10 year old - Jesus, I don't want to think about it.

You say he has a padded jacket and helmet, but not actual full on leather / kevlar and not protective boots / trousers.

There was a father around here who ended up in prison for manslaughter - he thought his young daughter would be fine on the road on a mini-quad bike - very sad.
