school report

chopin33 · 02/07/2014 19:02

Today we had our children's school reports, we are rather concerned.
Before we opened dd's report we were approached by another mother who said that she had received her dd's report which had her dd's name on the front of the report and our dd's report on the inside. We then opened our dd's report to find our dd's name on the front of the report and this other child's report on the inside. Headteacher then snatched the report away and said "I will have so speak to (dd's teacher) about this I am not very happy). Furthermore we then received our son's report and we quote "he enjoyed our trip to Jodrell Bank and loved exploring the centre. He learned so much on this trip and really enjoyed looking at the stars"
In fact ds was at the hospital that day and missed the trip.
We think that this is totally unacceptable what do you think.

Aibu?

The Jodrell Bank bit might be excusable, a stock sentence for a trip. But not the rest of it. Head is going to be absolutely fit to be tied with that teacher.... issues of safeguarding and confidentiality are taken very, very seriously. You can imagine the possible ramifications.

Hold that thought and let the head do their stuff. You can let them know how disappointed you are when you are a bit less angry about it, knowing that you can then sound determined not raving Smile.

Trust me, that teacher is in quite a lot of hot water!

CatKisser · 02/07/2014 19:11

Actually, I wouldn't imagine the teacher will be in the shit. More like the admin person who stuff the reports into envelopes. It's an unfortunate error.

Opinionatedbugger · 02/07/2014 19:13

I've often wondered whether they print them out in bulk and just change the name. There's been instances where I've heard other parents quote word for word the same that was on my child's report.

fedupbutfine · 02/07/2014 19:16

Two weeks ago I wrote 150+ reports. Whilst I do know the young people concerned and what they may (or may not be capable of) in my subject area...there comes a point at which you start to repeat yourself.

CatKisser · 02/07/2014 19:18

Opinionated I can't speak for others, but my Maths, English, Science and Personal Development comments are written from scratch. My other subjects are selected from a bank and tweaked. Obviously altered to take into account special talent or areas of particular success/weakness.
They would be totally unmanageable if I didn't do it this way.

greenfolder · 02/07/2014 19:18

i would take it as an admin error with no harm done.

one year we got a lovely covering letter explaining how each report was lovingly crafted for each child. The first sheet started $NAME! has worked well in English this year.

Groovee · 02/07/2014 19:19

My friend got a different childs name in one of her son's reports. Seeing as my friend spent the whole of her Easter Holiday's writing her reports starting 8am every morning and spending around 10 hours a day, she said mistakes can be made. Her jobshare double checks them and changes any mistakes.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 02/07/2014 19:21

I would expect Primary School reports to be tailored to each child and not carbon copied - teacher has 30 kids they know incredibly well.

Secondary school - yes to stock phrases used but care really really meeds to be taken to get the right report to the right student!!

massagegirl · 02/07/2014 19:23

It will be the exhausted teacher who made a mistake and put the wrong report in. I have now left the profession. When I was a teacher we would copy and paste but I would also change it to suit each child so that I fel each report have a genuine picture of each child. Bear in mind teachers have all the marking, planning, resource making, teaching, patents evenings, staff meetings, after school clubs, school productions, monitoring student teachers, subject coordinati

Nomama · 02/07/2014 19:24

Catkisser, really? I can't imagine any head passing that off as an admin error.

Then again I had forgotten that such a thing exists - we don't get admin support in FE Smile

CatKisser · 02/07/2014 19:24

ThinkIveBeenHacked whilst we DO know our kids very, very well, we also have to write comments for about 11 different subject areas and quite frankly whilst slogging on at 11pm before deadline day, trying to recall how little Jimmy's performed in French, I'm not ashamed to use and tweak a stock comment!

massagegirl · 02/07/2014 19:24

Subject coordination, and then reports on top of that.
No doubt the teacher that made a mistake will get a bollocking.

CatKisser · 02/07/2014 19:25

Well I'd have thought so, NoMama - I've never put reports in envelopes anyway. And when I say admin support, I mean the office manager...not my own personal admin person! Grin

choppin33 Have you never made a mistake?... Ever? Either in your job or in life? If you can honestly answer 'no' to that then I will give you your YANBU.

Add in the fact that most teachers are absolutely exhausted by this time of year - from lots of things, but particularly finding at least 30 hours of their own time to write the reports.

And a headteacher who says that about his/her teachers doesn't sound great. For a start, it should NOT have been the teacher putting the reports into envelopes. A more professional headteacher, who has more respect for their staff, would have absolutely apologised to you and assured you that they would find out what happened.

No, it shouldn't have happened, but it did. Nothing to be done about it now and maybe they will check more carefully next time.

CateBlanket · 02/07/2014 19:32

Bear in mind teachers have all the marking, planning, resource making, teaching, patents evenings, staff meetings, after school clubs, school productions, monitoring student teachers ...

That's their job, what they're paid to do Hmm

Opinionatedbugger · 02/07/2014 19:34

You start to wonder what the point of a report is. I understand teachers are exhausted and it's a really taxing job ( I couldn't do it). I just don't see the point of reports anymore. You won't get a very accurate account of your child as it's the same template they seem to use for every kid. Would save the teachers the hassle of not having to write them either. I'm a big believer in parents night that's when you find out what you need to know.

PeanutButterAndMarmite · 02/07/2014 19:35

I'd be more annoyed at the comment on enjoying the trip your DS didn't go on. The mix up between DD's report is probably an admin error, mistakes happen. I'm a teacher and took 90 year 9 kids on a trip abroad this year, I damn well know who went and who didn't.

Nomama · 02/07/2014 19:35

Ah we don't have one them either Catkisser.

We have to do all of our own envelope stuffing.... and filing the triplicates (aaaaaaaargh!)

And CateBlanket - don't bother. No one is going to nibble that old chestnut.

fedupbutfine · 02/07/2014 19:36

actually...not paid to do stuff after school, nor to monitor student teachers...amongst other stuff we all do without question, day in, day out.

CatKisser · 02/07/2014 19:37

That's horrific, NoMamma!
And CateBlanket....riiiight.

Haggisfish · 02/07/2014 19:41

As a teacher, when dd is at school, I will contact their form tutor once a term and ask them to send a quick email round her teachers asking for areas to improve and where she is doing well. I will time it do it does not fall within report writing time!

BoneyBackJefferson · 02/07/2014 19:42

CateBlanket

Hahaha, you're joking right? What kind of gold plated school has admin people who put teachers' reports into envelopes for them?! We somehow find time to do it ourselves on the last day of term.

I live in dread of making a mistake like that. Why would you cause a fuss. What harm does it do, really? They just get switched back.
