school report

Today we had our children's school reports, we are rather concerned.
Before we opened dd's report we were approached by another mother who said that she had received her dd's report which had her dd's name on the front of the report and our dd's report on the inside. We then opened our dd's report to find our dd's name on the front of the report and this other child's report on the inside. Headteacher then snatched the report away and said "I will have so speak to (dd's teacher) about this I am not very happy). Furthermore we then received our son's report and we quote "he enjoyed our trip to Jodrell Bank and loved exploring the centre. He learned so much on this trip and really enjoyed looking at the stars"
In fact ds was at the hospital that day and missed the trip.
We think that this is totally unacceptable what do you think.

Unfortunately these days reports are barely worth the paper they're written on. Generic, mass-produced, computer-generated platitudes. Mistakes happen, pronouns are wrong occasionally if you tick the wrong box for male/female by mistake. It has been known.

So what have I been doing since Easter then? If they are just mass produced computer generated. I have written every single one from the ground up. I have not copied and pasted once. Yes, some will have the same phases in, but that is because there is only so many ways to say that a child can count to 20. Just because some teachers just press a button, don't think we all do.

FYI my standard report is about 1,400 words. Times that by 25, the number of children in my class, and you have 35,000 words. Which is why it takes so long and teachers are so tired and liable to make mistakes.

CeliaFate · 03/07/2014 16:03

Pipbin I was only referring to schools who use the computer programmed reports, obviously. Writing reports is a time consuming business. I didn't mean to disparage everyone.

Catkisser I hope you're just having a bad day because you sound impatient, aggressive and confrontational to me.

Pipbin · 03/07/2014 16:08

Thank you Celia, I just didn't want people thinking it's just a case of pressing a button. I think that some 'ox-bridge' types could do with knowing that teachers are writing the equivalent of a couple of dissertations alongside teaching, planning, marking after school clubs etc. I acknowledge that it is our job, and I'm not saying 'woe is me' but I am saying that just because it's your job it doesn't put extra hours in the day.

CatKisser · 03/07/2014 16:10

I haven't addressed you at all, CeliaFate, my comments were to BettyFlour and I stand by them although they were, admittedly, impatient.

My sons report this year had two subjects missing saying there were staff shortages and so reports on those subjects wouldn't be available and on another two subjects they had forgotten to add his name to the text so they said " (child's name) has had a productive year etc etc)" so safe to say at least those parts were mass produced

Pipbin · 03/07/2014 16:26

Has the OP disappeared up her own arse?

Callani · 03/07/2014 16:30

Why can't they have a "confidence level in subject" page with ratings from 1 to 5 for each subject, and then a short half page summary of overall performance for each student?

1 and a half sides of A4 and probably a lot more personal to each child when a teacher only has to write that much than the copy & paste that goes on now.

Hulababy · 03/07/2014 20:34

manicinsomniac - I work in an infant school and teachers do not put the reports together, photocopy them or put them in envelopes. They write the reports and send them electronically for checking to the head of key stage and the HT, who then email them to the office for printing, copying and putting together ready for parents.

diddl · 03/07/2014 20:43

I'd be more annoyed about the HT snatching the report away after it had easily been sorted with the other mum.
