Am I being a total brat or is my boss taking the piss out of her staff ?
We process huge amounts of paper due to audit trails in Finance etc but are not allowed to file it in work time. We are expected to come in early or work late to get it done- I am hourly paid and despite starting an hour early every single day never get paid for this. Today I went in and started filing to be told she would prefer me to not file and do month end, still 55mins before I start work and bearing in mind I am not allowed to file in work time.
Later in the day she then proceeded to put her massive pile of filing in my trays for me to do!

What is the reason give for not being allowed to do it during working hours?

Orangeisthenewbanana · 01/07/2014 21:56

Why are you expected to do filing outside of your paid hours? Is it part of your job description? If so, then you should be paid for it.

zoeymlucas · 01/07/2014 21:57

She says there are more productive things to do, this is not only at month end we just are not allowed to file full stop in paid time!

Um. What? This is madness.

Luggagecarousel · 01/07/2014 21:57

Your boss is taking the piss.

She pays you for the time, or you don't do it.

Simples.

MrsMaturin · 01/07/2014 21:59

So she is compelling you to do unpaid overtime by refusing permission for you to do certain work tasks in work time? Right...........

Do you have a HR department (and/or a union rep)

zoeymlucas · 01/07/2014 21:59

Was super angry today over my pay being docked so wanted to check I want being a brat before I call a meeting to discuss

Post in employment. But the answer is no you do not have to work outside your contracted hours. Do you have an HR department? If so go and see them and get it sorted out.

SwedishEdith · 01/07/2014 22:00

Eh? Are you in a union? I think I can guess the answer
I would look into joining one and getting some advice here

Why was your pay docked?

zoeymlucas · 01/07/2014 22:01

It's a bit awkward as it's a firm of solicitors and I am new but I just don't think she can expect people to work in there own time doing work tasks for nothing!
Today at lunch I even sat on a bench outside to make sure for once I got a lunch break- think a work to rule and hours it needed

That sounds appalling. I regularly do unpaid overtime, but I'm in a professional career on a salary and it's part of the job description. Asking you to do this is insane.

What would happen if you don't do it?

whereisshe · 01/07/2014 22:02

Either filing is part of the job, or it's not part of the job.

If it's part of the job, it gets done in work hours and you get paid for it. If you get paid on an hourly basis do you get paid enough for a longer work day to be ok? (I used to get a great contract rate that would have made "over and above" tasks ok, but that's not the norm).

If it's not part of the job, you don't do it.

I don't understand her position on "do it in your free time"...?

Softlysoftlycatchymonkey · 01/07/2014 22:02

She is taking the piss, your working for free! Add all those extra hours a week, then month then in to the year! Your probably giving her a free weeks worth of work.
Go speak to your union.

zoeymlucas · 01/07/2014 22:02

I had hospital so took the afternoon off work, however I came in a morning on my week off (booked holiday) to make up the time, her answer was I had a day sick in May they paid so it's tough

OP posts:
Orangeisthenewbanana · 01/07/2014 22:02

You are not being unreasonable. She has no right to force you to do unpaid overtime, especially on such a regular basis. Set up a meeting with HR. Do you have any written instruction from her teling you not to do filing in work time?

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 01/07/2014 22:03

How long have you been such a mug so exploited? You must be owed some serious back pay. Your boss is a cheeky twat and needs pulling up sharp. Can you arrange a meeting with the lot of you and explain that this is in fact not on and you're all owed a bit of money for unpaid work?

OatcakeCravings · 01/07/2014 22:03

What does it say in your contract about overtime?

zoeymlucas · 01/07/2014 22:05

If we don't do it, it's left and piles up and everyone bitches and moans about the mess! I don't get paid great as am actually more qualified than boss but have stepped down while doing college and starting Uni in Feb - when I will be quiting this job

OP posts:
LostTeacher · 01/07/2014 22:06

I thought this was a joke thread and you were going to admit to being a teacher!

Your workload sounds like mine but in teaching we get paid a salary and so it's part of the job. It's not yours if you are on an hourly wage.

ThePinkOcelot · 01/07/2014 22:06

If this were me, there would be no filing being done, fullstop! There must be some sort of law against this type of thing!

zoeymlucas · 01/07/2014 22:09

No written proof, but my contract is in my desk so will dig out tomorrow and have a good look. Luckily I am part time but am sick of feeling like I am being taken the piss out off.
We are a small team her assistant is up her arse and loves doing extra for nothing and the job share of me is like an outcast as she won't do it

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 01/07/2014 22:10

No way would I file a single sheet of paper. Id shove that days papers in a box and leave it outside the bosses office. They dont want to pay anyone to deal with it then they can deal with it themselves.

FunkyBoldRibena · 01/07/2014 22:19

Why do you need your contract? Work the hours that you are paid for. If you r manager doesn't want you to file in working hours then the filing won't get done will it?
