What do you think? Iceland - and the Sun newspaper.

Lurker emerging here in the hope that I'm not the only one.

I shop at Iceland regularly (it's handy, and they sell brilliant things if you look). They've just gone into a partnership with the Sun newspaper, and while I am completely averse to any dealings with that paper, I know that not everyone is, (and that's not necessarily the point of this discussion.)

They now have a stand in the shop selling the Sun, it's right in the entrance and it's at a low height so kids will undoubtedly see it.

Given the image on the front, I thought this was inappropriate and said so to the shop manager - it seems I am the only one to complain so far.

I've attached today's and yesterday's images for your info.

So, AIBU to think that a store that surely represent themselves as a family brand, thinks it acceptable to display this?

Perhaps I am hugely overreacting. I'm just genuinely shocked that every other parent with kids has been happy/unruffled to walk their kids by the stand without saying anything.

What do you think?

No YANBU. Don 't shop there. It's a shithole and the "savings" are crappy, processed food dressed up as bargains.

Go to Aldi.

MrsVoleTheVet · 01/07/2014 11:22

Please don't let the fact I'm an Iceland shopper detract from my post... I use it for salad, veg, frozen veg, bread and milk mainly. I'm on foot, and it is by far the handiest option.

The manager said it's a nationwide thing and that instructions on where to put the stand are not his jurisdiction.

YABU to call the Sun a "newspaper"

Laquitar · 01/07/2014 11:23

Is there any child who will at Sun instead of the ice cream and pizzas etc?

I hate the Sun but still i think it is Iceland' s bussiness to decide and ours to decide where to shop and what to read.

MrsWinnibago · 01/07/2014 11:24

MrsVole it's a good point...why shuoldn;t you shop there without this crap on show? It;s awful..write to head office perhaps?

Laquitar · 01/07/2014 11:25

'who will look at..'

Rubadubstylee · 01/07/2014 11:27

I won't shop at Iceland again. I actively boycott the Sun so anyone in partnership with the Sun (as opposed to a general retailer selling all newspapers) won't get my business. Thank you for raising this.

MrsVoleTheVet · 01/07/2014 11:29

Yes, Head office - I will get in touch with them, thanks. Do you think it's better on paper, or via email/Facebook?

Ha at "YABU to refer to the Sun as a newspaper" :)

Rubadubstylee are you going to get in touch to tell them so? I would love it if I wasn't the only one!

kali110 · 01/07/2014 11:31

Think its up to them what they sell

windchime · 01/07/2014 11:38

What is wrong with a bare arse, pray?

MrsVoleTheVet · 01/07/2014 11:42

windchime - I'm not trying to open a debate on the merits (or otherwise) of nudity in mainstream "family" publications.

I'm saying that a "family" shop shouldn't make it impossible to ignore for the sake of their free advertising space (or whatever). That I choose to keep this stuff away from my kids, and I don't see why I should have it unexpectedly forced upon us while I am choosing lunchbox items.

OP posts:
MrsVoleTheVet · 01/07/2014 11:43

Obviously I can no longer shop there. That is what I am going to do, in fact. It doesn't mean all is well again, though.

I also found out something about myself - that I am in the obvious minority.

"Obviously I can choose to no longer shop there."

That sounded a bit more impassioned than I meant it to :)

I really don't think a child is going to pay much attention to a copy of The Sun on display.

Also, papers are on sale at every other supermarket already (with the exception of Aldi) - always at a child-height level. How is this different?

MrsVoleTheVet · 01/07/2014 11:47

It's different because instead of being on a newspaper aisle surrounded by other newspapers, it's in a stand in the middle of the entrance on its own.

OP posts:
SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 01/07/2014 11:48

Will you be avoiding every outlet where The Sun is available at an eye catching level?

All supermarkets, newsagents, WHSmith etc. etc. etc.?

If not then please do get over yourself.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 01/07/2014 11:49

It's really not different at all. They are also just inside the doorway in our local WHSmith.

MrsVoleTheVet · 01/07/2014 11:49

No, because they are not in partnership with the Sun, they are not actively promoting their customer's seeing/buying of it.

I can't see that there's any reason to be so rude. You disagree- I get it.

AnyoneForTennis · 01/07/2014 11:51

It's a pregnant woman?

AnyoneForTennis · 01/07/2014 11:53

Maybe Iceland are doing offers via the sun same way as haven do?

All Iceland shops have the stand, the manager won't be able to simply remove it. It's not his choice.

MrsBoldon · 01/07/2014 11:54

Surely your local newsagent and every supermarket also have these on display in their newspaper/magazine section?.

I'm not saying it's fine but it's not a banned or censored publication so it's in all the supermarkets isn't it?.

It certainly is in Tesco (just been there).

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 01/07/2014 11:54

Are you new to MN? I am really not being rude. You have asked for opinions and my opinion is that you are being very precious about a complete non-issue.

I am not a fan of The Sun either, but it is available everywhere. We don't have it in the house and none of my children have ever given it a second glance when out & about.

OwlCapone · 01/07/2014 11:57

I think the real issue is that the Sun puts these images on their front cover. Or anywhere else in their paper.

kali110 · 01/07/2014 12:01

Yes its a family shop. All families are different and not all have young children. Your family isnt better than other families. They are for everyone.
If you want to boycott all then you will have to boycott marks, tesco, morissons, sainsburys they all sell it and they are 'family' shops.
