What do you think? Iceland - and the Sun newspaper.

Lurker emerging here in the hope that I'm not the only one.

I shop at Iceland regularly (it's handy, and they sell brilliant things if you look). They've just gone into a partnership with the Sun newspaper, and while I am completely averse to any dealings with that paper, I know that not everyone is, (and that's not necessarily the point of this discussion.)

They now have a stand in the shop selling the Sun, it's right in the entrance and it's at a low height so kids will undoubtedly see it.

Given the image on the front, I thought this was inappropriate and said so to the shop manager - it seems I am the only one to complain so far.

I've attached today's and yesterday's images for your info.

So, AIBU to think that a store that surely represent themselves as a family brand, thinks it acceptable to display this?

Perhaps I am hugely overreacting. I'm just genuinely shocked that every other parent with kids has been happy/unruffled to walk their kids by the stand without saying anything.

What do you think?

For posters saying "the Sun is available anywhere" that is completely diferent to a retailer entering into an agreement with one specific newspaper.

To me, that says "This company endorses the message from this rag newspaper". As I said upthread, I actively boycott the Sun and will not give my money to a company which supports its values.

If you go into any supermarket they have news papers sun being one tbhe star another whivh might have a woman on the front in very little clothes you go to iceland you buy your milk you leave its a non issue imo

Mrsjayy · 01/07/2014 12:46

By boycotting the sun nobody is making a political stand you are just not buying a shitty tabloid newspaper we all know its shit and has dodgy stories and naked women its q gossip paper just like heat magazine

PinkSquash · 01/07/2014 12:48

I would have a very upset DS1 if he saw the child sex killer headline, it would petrify him. Why should I have to explain to my child about a paedophile is because the newspaper is right in his way without any avoiding it.

ComposHat · 01/07/2014 12:53

I can see this doing Iceland's sales on Liverpool a huge boost. If shops get vandalised on Liverpool they only have themselves to blame.

Couldn't disagree more. Had more people objected to the cover up of Hillsborough by police & politicians with the Sun playing an active part then maybe we wouldn't still be having discussions now about the relationships between News International, the police and politicians.

Sez643 · 07/07/2014 16:32

Totally agree. The Sun newspaper is a disgrace to society just like The News of the World. It is degrading to women & highly inappropriate headlines & images almost always plastered over the front page, not to mention page 3!
It's about time the government get a grip & stop being so hypocritical - so it's NOT ok to wolf whistle at a woman or shout nice bum but completely exceptable to have men perve at them almost naked in a Daily newspaper that is fully accessible to influential children???? Absolute idiots!!

SpeedofSound0 · 07/07/2014 17:02

No, YANBU. I hate that newspaper and everything it stands for and represents..Rupert Murdoch and the lies former editor Kelvin MacKenzie deliberately printed about the miner's strike and the battle of Orgreave, Hillsborough etc. etc. Angry

YABU calling the scum a newspaper though Grin.
It is a misogynist, racist, homophobic right-wing rag
that should not be exposed to innocent minds. Smile

Really though it is your choice, and it sounds as though you have made your decision anyway, ignore my ramblings above.

You say you no longer shop at the shithole known as Iceland anymore though? Well Morrisons have also tied up with them with a free voucher scheme, so that is one place I shall give a miss myself, although there are plenty of other reasons that I am not shopping with Morrisons for though.

What some people find tasteful or what others feel is distasteful is purely subjective anyway, as we all know.
