I think that flaunting wealth earned by doing something you have just publicly failed at is an insult to millions of us who mistakenly believed that England might have just made a ripple this time.

And yes I AM more than a tiny bit jealous Envy

Sorry it's the Mail!

VSeth Omg his torso is gorgeous and the England team should play topless from here on and forever.

I do think it would be appropriate if they kept out of the media for the duration of the World Cup tournament

Was he offered a choice? Or was it simply the lovely paparazzi helping themselves to free shots of someone famous minding their own business, which is not unheard of?

HattyMonkey · 30/06/2014 21:28

To be fair and I am not an England or Liverpool supporter but Steven Gerrard is not a player I would ever accuse of not giving a shit about playing for his Country. He always puts in everything even in friendlies. Yes the money and adulation is over the top but the thread wasn't about that. Hope your dh is on the mend Lizzy.

MrsVamos · 30/06/2014 21:31

Lizzy

So glad he will be OK.

Shameful what value 'we' put on certain sports people, compared to nurses, docs etc.

Its all gone so wrong, and no-one seems willing to put it right.

I wonder if players would have played a bit better if they were earning minimum wage.

I'd like to see them try it at Club level. Then see how well they do.

JohnFarleysRuskin · 30/06/2014 21:31

The photos were from his Instagram.

dagmarsablob · 30/06/2014 21:41

Annie 'minding their own business' would involve applying appropriate privacy settings to social media. He hasn't posted these snaps or his daughter's faces just to share with his nearest and dearest.

On the whole if you see these people in the Daily Mail, they want to be there.

At least he didn't bite anyone

slithytove · 30/06/2014 23:17

And in fairness, their fees for the World Cup aren't massive. Around £1000 a game if they play iirc. Which does go to charity.

Precious Wow! That is actually quite offensive - you think I am wishing people dead because I suggested a little restraint? I don't think I have posted anything indicating I am feeling murderous.

OP posts:
PrimalLass · 01/07/2014 08:22

Why should he show restraint? They weren't good enough and got knocked out so he went on holiday. It's not a personal affront to the fans. If your colleagues aren't good enough at their jobs do you cancel your summer holiday?

londonrach · 01/07/2014 08:35

Don't understand man finishes work and goes on holiday with wife and children .... Why does he need to keep low profile. He not been naughty with another woman or anything like that (not that matters to anyone but his family) and he isn't a Harris or a js. So why can't he ho on holiday. Strange question op. By the way his girls are beautiful and lovely to see them.

Groovee · 01/07/2014 08:44

I don't really care, he's gone on holiday with his family like any other parent. At least he wasn't there for cheating on his wife while he was away!

He looks like hes really having a nice time with his children. The season starts again soon so who can blame him.

MostlyMama · 01/07/2014 09:02

What a nasty OP

Happydaysatlast · 01/07/2014 09:05

Most people on mumsnet by nature couldn't give a toss about football. So you won't have much agreement op.

I don't deny him a holiday with his kids but I do feel very sorry for the people who really were looking forward to watching at least some Englsnd matches past the group stages.

My disabled neighbour for example, he was so disappointed. The pubs who needed the customers, thousands of people who for various reasons have lives where football is really very important.

There is no denying that England should have done a lot better and the players are paid a huge amount of cash to do so. They did not perform.

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 01/07/2014 10:00

But, again, HALF the teams have to go out at the group stage - why SHOULDN'T England be one of them? If you enjoy football, surely watching the rest of the matches is still great even though it's not England playing? The knock-out matches so far have been really exciting with late goals, penalties and lots of drama. I could see why Uruguay would be very disappointed in Suarez, but I think it's ridiculous to get angry at the England team for losing. I'm teaching my toddler board games at the moment and the main lesson I'm trying to convey is that losing isn't failure, someone always has to lose and the important thing is to enjoy playing. I'm pretty sure that pubs will still get plenty of customers! England often don't get very far, it's hardly a surprise and it doesn't make any material difference to the general public whether the players go on holiday or sit at home weeping.

Flipflops7 · 01/07/2014 10:03

Agree with all that, Jelly.

Tiredmumno1 · 01/07/2014 10:22

Well said jelly

Lizzylou · 01/07/2014 10:29

Again, they weren't expected to get out of the group stages, but at least to have a bloody good go! They lost against Italy but at least they tried, I teach my dc to try their hardest, it doesn't matter if they lose if they have done their best.
And what the players get paid for playing for their country is a red herring, they should be proud to represent their country, it should be the pinnacle of their career.

Happydaysatlast · 01/07/2014 10:37

It's a great pity Suavez didn't bite Rooney. We might have got a penalty then. Grin

No I don't think England do okay with the passion of some teams and that showed.

MrsVamos · 01/07/2014 10:38

I don't think they should get paid for playing for their country.

To be chosen should be honour enough.

Cheap journalism - nick someone's photos from instagram and sell it as a story.
