I think that flaunting wealth earned by doing something you have just publicly failed at is an insult to millions of us who mistakenly believed that England might have just made a ripple this time.

And yes I AM more than a tiny bit jealous Envy

Sorry it's the Mail!

Should England fans be burning effigies of him ? Hmm

That was probably Stevens last world cup. Its a shame we didn't/don't have a Manager in the same class.

ilovesooty · 30/06/2014 20:35

He should, of course, have taken his girls to a B and B in Blackpool, where he should have been put in the stocks every morning at 6am while the disgruntled fans pelted him with runny soft boiled eggs Bloody ridiculous OP.

Rainicorn · 30/06/2014 20:36

Unless you're paying his wages, why do you care?

Football is just a game, just like rugby, tennis and cricket. Do you berate the English players for not winning at those sports as well?

Redcoats · 30/06/2014 20:36

Nobody thought we were going to do well, not even the england manager.

Nice to see him smile. He's quite frowny but well fit

Lizzylou · 30/06/2014 20:38

I really thought after the first game against Italy that England was going to be an exciting team to watch again, they weren't. They were woeful in the Uruguay and Costa Rica games.

In fact, I watched the Uruguay game in a hotel room after my husband had just suffered a stroke whilst in a different city. The amazing medical team who managed to make sure there would be no permanent damage earn an annual wage which equates to less than the average England player earns a week (far less in most cases).

To be fair, Steven Gerrard at least looked like he tried. Nice he is on holiday, he is obviously a caring Father, but a bit of tact wouldn't go amiss.

MooMaid · 30/06/2014 20:45

Get a grip - seriously Biscuit

Lizzylou · 30/06/2014 20:47

Sorry, that was all a bit deep, and I am feeling raw right now, but really, all dh wanted was a tv to watch the game, but couldn't because he was under such observation. We are a football loving family, but this hero worship of people who just kick a ball around (badly unless it's for the more lucrative club games) or on TOWIE/Big brother, whatever, I am sick of it.

AnyoneForTennis · 30/06/2014 20:47

Ooh this thread didn't go well for you op!

dagmarsablob · 30/06/2014 20:47

LIzzylou a bit of tact wouldn't go amiss.

That's all I was trying to say.

Wow, I've read some strange things online but this one is right up there, especially the bit about England having a chance. Agree with Rhonda he put his heart and soul into his game.

MrsVamos · 30/06/2014 20:51

dagmar

Yes, but you picked out 1 player.

There were 23+ others out there besides him.

Agree with being sick of 'adulation for doing nothing'.

Lizzylou · 30/06/2014 20:54

I never thought they had a chance to get out of the group, but at least against Italy they were exciting to watch and looked hungry.
The next two games they looked like they were just dreaming of their holidays.

Missda · 30/06/2014 20:54

Wow outrageous. A Dad enjoying quality time with his girls. What a scandal.

MrsVamos · 30/06/2014 20:58

I didn't either, Lizzy and had to crush my DS dreams of us doing well, bless him.

DH and I have warned him that at 14, he has at least another 60 years to get used to us doing nothing in Euro and World events, because Club pays means more. Sad

dagmarsablob · 30/06/2014 21:03

mrsVamos No I didn't pick him especially. I didn't intend this to be a personal attack on Gerrard or his family either. It just happened to be his pictures splashed all over social media looking like 2 fingers up to the nation. It just happened to be his pictures I saw - pick any of the other 23.

AnyoneForTennis What do you mean? How bizarre that you think I planned this thread hoping for universal approval....

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 30/06/2014 21:05

I don't understand this petulance when England lose. It's a game - someone loses every time. I'm sure they all tried as hard as they could. But half the teams go out in the group stage - should all those players go into hiding? Why do they need to be 'tactful'? I agree that the amount of money in football is obscene and plenty of players have been involved in very distasteful scandals but one of them going on holiday hardly seems like a problem to me!

VSeth · 30/06/2014 21:08

1, Yes they give their England wages to charity.

2, I think he deserves a family break and obviously loves his girls.

3, Omg his torso is gorgeous and the England team should play topless from here on and forever.

Lizzylou · 30/06/2014 21:08

Mrs V, mine are 8 and 10, our boys have years of disappointment ahead of them Grin
To be fair, Steven Gerrard would be the last person I would be annoyed at, I have an unnatural resentment towards Wayne R though, especially after his rant against the fans during the the last World cup.

MrsVamos · 30/06/2014 21:09

I know you didn't, I'm not having a go at you.

Steven has always been known as one of the hardest working players, for club and country.

To be fair, maybe he didn't know pictures of him & family would be splashed all over the papers.

I dare say, I expect the others are all on holiday too.

But I expect the paps get big bucks for big players. Tomorrow it will probably be Wayne & co.

Feckin annoys me when we work our arses off and can't afford a holiday. Sad

dagmarsablob · 30/06/2014 21:10

Jelly I don't think they need to go into hiding necessarily but I do think it would be appropriate if they kept out of the media for the duration of the World Cup tournament. After all they should still be at work!

OP posts:
MrsVamos · 30/06/2014 21:11

Wayne is just a prat, Lizzy !

Don't get me started on why he always performs well for club but not for country...Angry !

Lizzylou · 30/06/2014 21:12

It's not petulance, Jelly, it's just expecting the national team to actually look like they are trying. Not so much to ask, surely?

If you want examples of petulance, look on the field, not off it.

JohnFarleysRuskin · 30/06/2014 21:12

He was pretty crap though, wasn't he?

(I will now go into hiding for duration of the tournament)

MrsVamos · 30/06/2014 21:13

PS Lizzy

Hope your DH is going to be OK.

xxx

Lizzylou · 30/06/2014 21:16

He is, thankyou MrsV, a lot of work ahead but he was treated so promptly and so well, all will be good.
The nursing staff were doing 12hr shifts, I had a lovely nurse talking to ne on my journey down, whilst I was a snotty howling mess, then when I got to the hospital, she came and found me and gave the biggest hug. Just put our faux sleb culture into perspective.
