To think people should use these words/phrases more often

Inspired by the 'hubster' thread, there are several words and phrases in our glorious language that have been much neglected of late, and I resolve to use them more often.

My current favourites:

"I don't like the cut of your jib"

"steal a march [on someone]"

"lollygagging"

What words and/or phrases do you think should be brought back into common parlance?

Some Canadian friends of ours came over for DSis's wedding

I asked one of them what he had been up to and was like this Shock Shock Shock when he replied

"Oh, just fucking the dog"

guffaw · 26/11/2014 23:20

we use 'jolly' a lot - jolly cold, jolly good, jolly good sort etc,
curate's eggy, for 'so so',
'cats after me' , for something that's gone wrong (catastrophe, think we got it off a cartoon)
splendid! is indeed a splendid word.

GoringBit · 26/11/2014 23:29

DM was talking to someone who'd had a landmark birthday, and was told that they'd had 'enough champagne to cobble dogs'.

TheSoulCakeDuck · 26/11/2014 23:38

When we asked what was for tea, my mum often used to say "three kicks at the cupboard door and whatever falls out"

Or

"Waitnsee"

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 27/11/2014 07:37

Duck we used to get "bread and pullet" or "bread and duck"

HellKitty · 27/11/2014 07:50

Full as a gun - DP said this last night, never heard it before.

In and out like a dog at a fair/in a butchers shop.

What a fanny on - my favourite and now adopted by DP.

desertmum · 27/11/2014 08:37

we use 'top johnny banana' or just 'top johnny' if in a rush. Also 'the DB's' (dog's bollocks) when things are going well.

There's a Black Country expression for someone who's having a bad day: "they must have trod on a robin". Absolutely no idea what it's on about but it makes me laugh every time!

guffaw · 27/11/2014 16:12

we use 'face like a dropped pie'

Shockers · 27/11/2014 17:45

I had a group of teens sniggering when I suggested that their language was a little ripe.

Can also be used on teenage boys after a heavy rugby session, ' You're a little ripe, shall I draw you a bath?'

DancingDolly · 27/11/2014 18:46

He's no goats toe - he's not daft (possibly northern iris?)

DancingDolly · 27/11/2014 18:47

Irish not iris!

50ShadesofGreyMatter · 27/11/2014 20:40

Oh "bread and pullet", my DDad used to say that and until now I thought it was bread and pull it!! Hmm

vienna1981 · 27/11/2014 21:39

I'll go to the foot of our stairs.

No idea what this means. I think it's a George Formby expression.

I must be old fashioned. I say "blimey", "good lord", "old bean/fruit" and "for heaven's sake"all the time.
I also say "as black as a * arsehole". Blame my long -dead granny for that one.

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 27/11/2014 21:43

Oh yes 50, it's a pun. (Homonym?)
Here's one that I had to live down. My dm used to say "Charlie's dead" if your underskirt was showing.so I came out with this at my great aunties. Unfortunately her recently deceased much loved Dh was called... Yep. Blush

HappenstanceMarmite · 27/11/2014 21:55

Happenstance Grin

Toadinthehole · 27/11/2014 22:05

He looks like a dog chewing on a wasp.

She has a face like a slapped arse.

Snatchoo · 27/11/2014 22:10

I enjoy using bilious and when I feel my gorge rise Grin

Toadinthehole · 28/11/2014 01:44

I have just described someone as a "toerag". Do I win?
