Here I am watching her on TV with a massive massive crowd and she's so dull! Is it all a bit Emperors New Clothes ? Or would she be better live?

Unique is good, but not when it means you are doing it differently form others when there is reason they do it that way, molly. She will damage her voice singing like that.

MagnificentMaleficent · 29/06/2014 22:13

Yes mintyy we will see Smile

Sparklingbrook · 29/06/2014 22:15

Perhaps EG could give Gareth Malone a bell and get some tips if her technique isn't good. Smile

Smelsa · 29/06/2014 22:16

Music snobs are so boring.

cardibach · 29/06/2014 22:17

Now that would be an interesting programme to watch! I always want them to show more of the tutoring that goes on in his programmes and in others like 'The Voice'. I'm really interested in the technical stuff

cardibach · 29/06/2014 22:18

Smelsa that's a bit offensive. It doesn't make someone a snob to want something to be done with skill.

Smelsa · 29/06/2014 22:19

How is it offensive? I find music snobs boring. Do you class yourself as a music snob?

MagnificentMaleficent · 29/06/2014 22:21

Thing is cardi I'm sure she is surrounded by experienced professionals who know their stuff and who advise her.

There are plenty of musical greats or do things 'wrong'. Keith Moon for example.

I really don't get your tuning comments either.

Fairylea · 29/06/2014 22:21

Sparkling - the wrecking ball one was amazing :)

As a side note I LOVE john Newman. Out of my head has become one of my all time favourite songs ever. (Someone mentioned him upthread).

Claybury · 29/06/2014 22:22

I may be a music snob. But I'm not offended.
You only really notice technique when it's poor.

The world would be very boring if we all had the same taste.

OP posts:
cardibach · 29/06/2014 22:22

You seemed to be directing it at me and others who have said much the same. No, I don't think it is snobbery, or boring. It's a reasonable way to discuss who is good and who isn't. Feel free to like whatever, just don't call people who have other priorities in their judgement boring.
I could say that people who don't care about technique are boring. But I'm not a snob, so I don't.

shakethetree · 29/06/2014 22:25

If Ellie wasn't good at her job she wouldn't be as successful as she is.
You're starting to sound a bit weird cardibach.

cardibach · 29/06/2014 22:26

Magnificent I don't think you can assume that at all - they are advising her based on what is selling now, not on what is good for her long term, sadly. They don't care about her. Her tuning is an issue for me because her odd sound production makes it unreliable.
It was me who mentioned John Newman, Fairy. He Is awesome.

iwantgin · 29/06/2014 22:26

I thought she was great.

Plenty of pop/rock stars don't have perfect singing voices but are successful anyway
Bruce Springsteen for one. He is a fabulous performer

cardibach · 29/06/2014 22:28

shake she is good at making money. I am talking about musical technique. I think we all know that many successful (and therefore in some people's judgement good) pop artists are not great musicians. I am not the only one on the thread who doesn't like her by a long way - I am just the only one trying to explain why she is not to my taste. I am not suggesting others shouldn't like her, just explaining why I (and probably some other posters) don't. What's weird about that. Verging close on a personal attack, by the way...

Sparklingbrook · 29/06/2014 22:29

I don't really want to justify liking EG any more. I think her single and album sales and sell out tours speak for themselves TBH.

I will leave it at that.

cardibach · 29/06/2014 22:30

iwant Springsteen is fabulous, yes. His voice is not 'classical' but the sound production is good. Quality of voice and technique of production are two different things.

Smelsa · 29/06/2014 22:32

I'm surprised you are offended by a comment that apparently doesn't even apply to you. MN is always good for that, I guess!

I think our definitions of music snobs are different if you think I'm commenting on their judgement of music by saying they are boring. I'm referring to people who can't comprehend why someone might just like a song or singer and must know immmmmmmediately what their redeeming features are. I just like it coz it sounds nice isn't good enough and that's boring.

cardibach · 29/06/2014 22:32

I don't think anyone is asking you to justify liking her, Sparkling, rather explaining why they don't. I am not an advocate of the snobbery that says popular=bad, but neither do I think popular necessarily=good.
I too will leave it at that now. Off to bed.

shakethetree · 29/06/2014 22:33

I'm with you sparkling.

< gets coat >

cardibach · 29/06/2014 22:34

Smelsa just saw that as I posted my 'last' comment and need to explain. 'It sounds nice' is good enough. All I have been saying is that EG doesn't 'sound nice' to me and trying to explain why. Why do you want to say my viewpoint is wrong? No need to answer as I really am off to bed now!

Sparklingbrook · 29/06/2014 22:34

Could those who like her explain why? I'm not seeing any redeeming features. What am I missing?

That's the question that made me feel the need to justify it.

Never mind. I am off to bed soon too.

scottishmummy · 29/06/2014 22:35

Ellie has stunning voice, great range.she could sing a bus timetable and itd sound great

TheBabyFacedAssassin · 29/06/2014 22:35

Yawn....cardibach you may say you are not a snob but you sure do sound like one.

Smelsa · 29/06/2014 22:38

Music snobs are boring. And people who flounce off to bed but can't resist checking one more time before flouncing again are boring too. Hope that clears it up for you!
