To think Ellie Golding at Glastonbury is wildly over rated

Here I am watching her on TV with a massive massive crowd and she's so dull! Is it all a bit Emperors New Clothes ? Or would she be better live?

Leona Lewis was given the option to release this. She gave it back to Ellie. There's a recording of it on YouTube.

Flipflops7 · 29/06/2014 21:55

Can't stick her. & she destroyed Your Song.

Sparklingbrook · 29/06/2014 21:56

That was fab.

cardibach · 29/06/2014 21:56

I'm not suggesting she is not a nice person, Sparkling. But being nice is not a reason to have a singing career otherwise I would have one. Magnificent I'm aware not all young girls are body confident, but the post I responded to suggested that there was a reason why she might not be and that she had risen above somehow. FWIW I don't like what she is wearing despite being jealous of her body, so slating for what she wears is not necessarily related to her body...
I am a musician (amateur) and know lots of others (pro and am) and she doesn't seem to have any musicality to me. She is very average and her diction and intonation are very poor. She produces sound in the 'wrong' place resulting in an odd sound which is probably damaging her vocal chords I could link you to many girls (and boys) with more talent and musicality, and many of them are very lovely people too...
Still not even remotely convinced.

TessOfTheFurbyvilles · 29/06/2014 21:56

I think she's over-rated, so no, YANBU in my opinion.

CremeEggThief · 29/06/2014 21:58

I had to turn over, because she was annoying. I do think she has a good voice, but she just annoys me.

Sparklingbrook · 29/06/2014 21:58

I meant more that she has the whole package, hence the being nice, a great voice, fabulous image. She has it all IMO.

I am nice but I can't sing. Sad

cardibach · 29/06/2014 21:59

Juni ones who have some technique! Not many modern singers have, tbh. Ed Sheeran is fab. Florence Welch has her moments. Many country artists (e.g. Carrie Underwood, Kacey Musgrave) have good technique.

cardibach · 29/06/2014 22:00

I am nice, I can sing (not well enough to be pro) but I don't think I should be recognised. SHE doesn't have it all in terms of technique, though if you like her, you like her. No accounting for taste! (Meant in a non PA way)

Fairylea · 29/06/2014 22:01

I think she is very overrated and I've been told she is very rude in real life however it could have just been an off day - if I was followed about all bloody day I'd have pissed off days too....!

Sparklingbrook · 29/06/2014 22:03

I don't care or know anything about 'techinque' I just like what I like. Confused

I was a massive Duran Duran fan back in the day. SLB was a good singer to me, but don't know if he was singing correctly, doing the right breathing or whatever. Grin

TheBabyFacedAssassin · 29/06/2014 22:03

I think she's fab! She has an amazing energy and you can tell she loves what she does and seems a natural. I really like her voice and her songs too. Each to their own! That's why I love Glastonbury though, there's something for everyone!

MagnificentMaleficent · 29/06/2014 22:04

I can't hear any tuning issues. She has a distinctive voice and you always know her songs when you hear them.

IMO one of the signs of longevity.

cantbelievemyeyes · 29/06/2014 22:04

I don't mind some of her stuff, but I don't understand the really odd pronunciation of certain words. Particularly love, which she turns into 'lowf'' (the ow sound as in Ow, that hurts). Why? She doesn't say it like that when she talks.

Mintyy · 29/06/2014 22:05

Totally Emperors new clothes afaiac.

Claybury · 29/06/2014 22:06

Cardibach - I'm with you. Her signing is very breathy, I can't imagine her voice will last a long career the way she is singing.
It's a shame that having an athletic body commands a huge festival crowd, do people value that over good music ?

OP posts:
Mintyy · 29/06/2014 22:06

Lol at longevity. Let us see.

Mintyy · 29/06/2014 22:07

Quite an alarming number of people value looks and a good body over just about anything else.

shakethetree · 29/06/2014 22:08

Didn't she sing at William & Kate's wedding reception?

If she's good enough for Wills & Kate she's good enough for me :-)

Sparklingbrook · 29/06/2014 22:08

She went out with the divine Greg James too. Envy

mollypup · 29/06/2014 22:09

YABU.

I first watched her in Manchester 6 years ago along with about 10 other people. I knew she'd end up massive, and look at her now.

IMO her voice is fantastic and very unique but each to their own I suppose.

Fairylea · 29/06/2014 22:10

Greg James is just too good for her... I loved his parody of the hideaway video he did recently :)

cardibach · 29/06/2014 22:11

It's not just breathiness - she is producing the sound in her throat. It won't end well. Sparkling many (most?) 80s artists had good technique, possibly as a result of poor amplification in the clubs when they were on the way up! There are some good new artists (John Newman, Sam Smith) who have a very 80s sound.
I am an English teacher and I can't read anything badly written anymore as the technique grates on me, similarly I can't enjoy a singer with bad technique as I want to shout at them!

flipchart · 29/06/2014 22:11

It's horses for courses.

You like what you like, it's not a big deal.

She's not my taste but each to their own.

Sparklingbrook · 29/06/2014 22:12

What about the Wrecking Ball one he did Fairy? Grin

Well she seems to be with Dougie Poynter now. They make a nice couple.
