First world problem alert

Who is being unreasonable here? I pack the dishwasher cutlery all upwards in the different holes. Forks together, knives together etc. I also rinse crockery before stacking it in the washer.

Dh puts cutlery downwards, all together wherever it'll fit in the cutlery bit. Never rinses anything and then wonders why it stops cleaning until the filter has been cleaned.

THIS DRIVES ME BATSHIT CRAZY!

So do I need to get a grip or does dh need to stack the dishwasher better?

Knives should go down.

I don't with forks but guess either poss.

Don't rinse first. Neither do I bark for my dog...

:)

Canus · 29/06/2014 17:04

Cutlery downwards, especially knives - always.

I do rinse though.

IfYouCouldSeeMeNow · 29/06/2014 17:04

Cutlery goes downwards so that you don't touch the blade of the knife when you pick it up.

I don't rinse, but I probably should.

50/50?

WeirdCatLady · 29/06/2014 17:05

Cutlery downwards, three things in each segment of the cutlery basket.
Why rinse beforehand? Does your dishwasher not wash properly?

Tiggywinklespinny · 29/06/2014 17:06

Sharp knives go down I agree, but others no? I find the cutlery doesn't get clean! shit don't tell me he's right

I'm with you, cutlery upwards and rinse.

DocDaneeka · 29/06/2014 17:09

Never rinse individually before stacking, I just scrape. Waste of water. The dishwasher has a rinse at the beginning of a wash for this reason.

Cutlery facing down. Esp knives. Safety and not having to touch blades/ eating part of spoons and forks when loading (cos they are dirty) or unloading (because it's more hygienic)

CeliaFate · 29/06/2014 17:09

My friend went on a food hygiene course and said they advised rinse first, cutlery down. You're not meant to put the same type of cutlery together in case they fit together meaning they won't get cleaned properly.

Here a whole post of answers from Monday...

DocDaneeka · 29/06/2014 17:12

If your stuff isn't getting clean, maybe your dishwasher is an older model shite

Our last place the dishwasher was quite old and yes, you pretty much had to wash stuff by hand before loading to ensure it came out ok. New house, new dishwasher. 100x better. No rinsing and downwards cutlery and still comes out cleaner than the last house.

KillmeNow · 29/06/2014 17:14

Cutlery down . Never thought about touching the blades of knives though.I always do it because of scary stories of people falling onto sharp knives held upwards.Shock

And always scrape but never rinse. Sorry .

TheFairyCaravan · 29/06/2014 17:14

OMG you are DH's ideal woman! He rants for bloody England that cutlery has to be facing upwards, and rinsed, otherwise "it won't get cleaned properly"!

Every night when he puts his plate in after dinner, he stands rinsing and moving it all the "right" way round going "how many times do I have to say yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda"!

It gets right on my tits especially as when he was away for 4 months me and the kids just did it our way and it was fine!

TheFairyCaravan · 29/06/2014 17:15

Sharp knives do go down, we are allowed to do that without a lecture! Wink

BackforGood · 29/06/2014 17:17

You are completely right
If you find a training course can you let me know the details so I can send dh and the dc.
I thnak yuo

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 29/06/2014 17:59

I'm with your DH on this, I'm afraid. Although sharp knives should point downwards for safety.

I treat our dishwasher appallingly. Never rinse or clean the filters and everything is usually clean.

Our first dishwasher lasted about 13 years before dropping dead, second one was the cheapest Bosch available and is a few months old.

emummy · 29/06/2014 18:05

Please put all knives down - treated early lady who fell onto dishwasher, came in with knife sticking out of cheek. Was normal knife so always down in our house!

HannerHet · 29/06/2014 18:07

I would do it your way op but without the rinsing part

AcrossthePond55 · 29/06/2014 18:10

No no no no! The real question is; How do you get a DH to load the dishwasher in the first place?!? Grin

DurhamDurham · 29/06/2014 18:12

All cutlery standing upwards except for sharp knives ( someone once died after falling on a sharp knife sticking up in a dishwasher)

I rarely rinse anything, only eggy type dishes get a cursory rinse in the sink. I clean the filter monthly....or when there is a smell which alerts me to the fact that it needs to be cleaned Smile

tumbletumble · 29/06/2014 18:15

Cutlery upwards but rinsing is a waste of water and should be unnecessary unless your dishwasher is old and rubbish.

hoobypickypicky · 29/06/2014 18:16

Cutlery goes upwards except for sharp knives. I don't rinse ahead of loading it or, to paraphrase a previous poster, meow for my cat! Grin

ReadyToBreak · 29/06/2014 18:17

Cutlery upwards! And sharp knives laid flat on the mini shelving bits.

JamJimJam · 29/06/2014 18:22

Cutlery downwards so you can use the handles to get it out - more hygienic.

JoeyMaynardsghost · 29/06/2014 18:26

My dishwasher manual emphasises that the cutlery must be up not down (unless using model xyz with the fancy-pants cutlery tray which we don't have ) and has a picture for the gormless showing the basket with the knives, forks and spoons all upright.

Sharp knives ie bread knife etc go in the side tray on the top shelf on their side, points to the back of the machine.
