First world problem alert

Who is being unreasonable here? I pack the dishwasher cutlery all upwards in the different holes. Forks together, knives together etc. I also rinse crockery before stacking it in the washer.

Dh puts cutlery downwards, all together wherever it'll fit in the cutlery bit. Never rinses anything and then wonders why it stops cleaning until the filter has been cleaned.

THIS DRIVES ME BATSHIT CRAZY!

So do I need to get a grip or does dh need to stack the dishwasher better?

Someone died once by falling onto knives in a dishwasher. Cutlery downwards

cardibach · 29/06/2014 18:33

You are unlikely to die falling on a teaspoon, though, Blueandwhite! I put sharp knives in a different bit and cutlery facing up. Geography of my kitchen actually makes it more or less impossible to fall on the dishwasher, but it's a habit to put the sharp knives on the top shelf thingy. Dishwasher stacking is an art not a science, though.

I think you need to calmly lie him down and sit on his face for a while.

KirjavaTheCat · 29/06/2014 18:35

I've decided, if I ever have room for a dishwasher, I'm going to be the nicest dishwasher owner in the land, after reading all these dishwasher threads.

You lot don't know how you good you've got it. Obvs you rinse first.

Yama · 29/06/2014 18:37

Apparently we've got a dishwasher that doesn't need plates to be rinsed. Result.

Cutlery, except knives up.

olympicsrock · 29/06/2014 19:00

There was an article by scientist about this. The verdict was cutlery pointing up to clean better (apart from sharp knives which should point down for safety . Also that it is pointless to rinse first (just scrape excess food off). I sent this to Fil who is painful to watch washing everything first.

SmiteYouWithThunderbolts · 01/07/2014 12:37

We have a pain in the arse actually fancy pants cutlery tray and I drive DH to distraction by just plonking stuff in there and not grouping together all the knives, forks and spoons. Tbh, if he didn't make such a performance out of it, I probably would put them together. It's just too funny to wind him up over it though .

I do rinse stuff though. Our dishwasher goes on once a day in the evening, so if you put Weetabixy spoons in after breakfast, they're practically cemented together by the evening.

DeWee · 01/07/2014 13:44

Knives down. Just before we got our first dishwasher, there was a young boy who fell onto the dishwasher and an upwards knife went through his heart. Sad
Still makes me wince if I ever see anyone putting them upwards.

AnnieLobeseder · 01/07/2014 13:48

Don't put sharp knives in the dishwasher anyway, DH (who is a knife fanatic) says it blunts them.

bobbywash · 01/07/2014 14:39

Knives down, rest up (with the cutlery tray we have the rest will not go down). I only ever pre rinse if it's something like tomato soup, otherwise that's what the dishwasher is for.

As for large and sharp knives, hand wash those as I never thought the dishwasher did them any good, and am pleased to see someone has said it blunts them.

Berryglitter · 01/07/2014 14:46

I want a dishwasher :( (totally misses the point of the thread)

Mintyy · 01/07/2014 14:47

Oooh, why was title edited by HQ?

Yama · 01/07/2014 14:50

Yes, what was wrong with the thread title?

s88 · 01/07/2014 14:53

everything upwards apart from knifes . and I do rinse if there is still part of the Sunday dinner on the plate Grin

flowery · 01/07/2014 14:56

Cutlery upwards except knives, sharp or otherwise.

Mix cutlery for better washing.

Rinse only if absolutely caked, or tomato sauce (to avoid orange Tupperware).

flowery · 01/07/2014 14:57

Oh, and yes proper sharp knives (as opposed to cutlery knives) don't go in dishwasher at all, as it blunts them.

HenI5 · 01/07/2014 15:11

I only rinse if there's stuff on the blade or prongs that's going to lodge in the filter, it's not often necessary.

Our cutlery lies down in a pull out tray, each piece fits in its own slot. It's safer with blades and also makes sure that the items are kept suitably apart.

Oh just seen your post smiteyou I'm the only one who ever fills our dishwasher so it gets done how I like it, but I admit I group things, seeing as it's also me who empties it and puts the stuff away then it helps to group things that go together.

FreckledLeopard · 01/07/2014 15:12

Cutlery facing down and I never rinse (will occasionally soak a saucepan if needed). Never had an issue.

RiverTam · 01/07/2014 15:14

cutlery up (so you can see what's what) but why bother rinsing? Surely if you clean it regularly the filter won't block?

DoJo · 01/07/2014 15:31

So sharpen them! Life's too short for having a dishwasher and still washing up yourself so I don't rinse either and everything comes out clean. Knives go pointy end up and I just hope that I won't kill myself, same as I do when crossing the road/driving/flying/showering/any other thing that could potentially kill me.

IrianofWay · 01/07/2014 15:35

When we had one I didn't really care which way up the cutlery went. I did care that everything was rinsed a bit first and I did care that the same things were stacked together. DH didn't. Mainly because it never seemed to be him that put the damned things away!

Bettercallsaul1 · 01/07/2014 17:48

I can see the point of rinsing things if you're not going to wash them immediately - you know, when you haven't used enough dishes and cutlery to justify a wash and you're waiting to put more in later. If you don't rinse first, the food gets dried on to the cutlery and doesn't get properly clean when you wash it.
