shop assistant refused to sell me slice of cake I wanted!

I should post this in aibu, but...

I went to a grocery shop today. I went to the bakery section and told the assistant I'd like a slice of a nice chocolate they had. It was a rectangle shaped cake, already cut into squares like a tottenham cake, with quite a few squared already removed. I pointed to the corner slice as I liked the look of it and it's topping.

At that point the assistant said she could sell me one of the other squares, but not that one. She said it wouldn't be good for the next customers! There was some mention of the shape of the pieces left and exposing them. I left the counter. This was an already cut cake all for sale remember.

When I reached the checkout with my other items, I thought a little more about it and thought it bizarre and went to seek a manager to see why I couldn't buy the piece of cake. I found some sort of a supervisor who went halfheartedly to the counter. The first assistant and the supervisor then had a bit of a conversation, in Turkish I think so I couldn't understand them. He was decidedly unfriendly and said she said the sides of the adjoining pieces would be exposed and dry out. There were many bit of the cake missing so most pieces were exposed and which ever piece I was given would expose at least one but mostly two sides of adjoining pieces anyway (same as removing the corner I had chosen). The cake had already been completely cut up completely for sale. He hummed and hawed, but eventually sold me the slice. No attempt at any customer service.

I have never been refused an item on sale like this before. In fact in most deli's, it is 'which one do you want?'

Are they rubbish shopkeepers or should this customer have been grateful for any allocation of the item?

ps I had it after my lunch, and very nice it was too.

YANBU. I regularly ask for a particular piece or slice of cake/pie/meat whatever. I bought some haddock fillets the other day and I think I got the fishmonger to hold up each fillet before I made my final choice.

I actually have no shame.

Btw there was nothing wrong with the shopkeepers talking to each other in their own language. It's not rude at all.

Oh god sorry. That was a bit stalkerish!

VivaLeBeaver · 29/06/2014 18:15

In morrisons if you buy a pre cooked chicken they always ask you which one you want.

Birdsighland · 29/06/2014 18:18

Balloon, my mother once told my brother the doctor would do an autopsy on him. He was quite alarmed. She meant to say a biopsy.

I never ask for which slice/piece I want, just look wistfully at the best one and downcast if they pass over it.

Fresh fish though and I do say, because that's something that really varies.

TensionWheelsCoolHeels · 29/06/2014 18:19

I reckon the assistant had her eye on the bit you wanted, and the discussion you weren't party to went along the lines of ' it's my slice, my tea break is in 5 mins and I've been saving that' Grin

TensionWheelsCoolHeels · 29/06/2014 18:20

By the way I've not RTFT so if I've just repeated what someone else said earlier, sorry!

douchbag · 29/06/2014 18:25

This reminded me of yesterday in Gregg's yes Gregg's when I refused the burnt slice of pizza and asked for a different slice. She got all miffed at me Shock

BomberManIsAGirl · 29/06/2014 18:27

I would choose this slice. It's clearly bigger than its nieghbours, it only has one edge exposed, the icing looks nice and plentiful and it's not a corner.
Corners are undesirable as they are more often over baked.

My money/My choice, what's the problem?
Has no one ever shopped in a Continental market? sheesh the shop assistant would be under interrogation there. Talk about inspecting produce.

It's you pay - you say innit.

Not sure why on earth they'd cut the whole cake in advance, that's just silly.
Never heard of Tottenham Cake before either, you learn something every day.

Sidthesausage · 29/06/2014 18:44

He was saving the huge slice for his own lunch!

Hissy · 29/06/2014 18:45

Is there a First World Problem section I can nominate this for?

Grin
PhaedraIsMyName · 29/06/2014 18:51

Obviously the corner square is the one to go for if the cake is iced on the sides and the top.

I admire you OP for sticking to your guns. And they should have a cover on the cake.

CointreauVersial · 29/06/2014 18:58

Didn't Mel'n'Sue do a piece all about Tottenham Cake on the last series of GBBO? Or maybe it was the One Show....anyway, I'd never heard of it until then, but apparently it is definitely A Thing.

Meanwhile, yes, very odd about the slice choice issue, but it's not something to get worked up about.

AryaOfHouseSnark · 29/06/2014 19:01

Isn't it a bit coconutty ? Or is that Manchester cake.
How was your cake op ? Was it worth it ?

Fedupnagging · 29/06/2014 19:14

Loving this thread. Grin. And yes, I generally ask for a specific piece of cheese, meat, cake etc if I see one I particularly like the look of.

My money, my choice.

Oh, and burnt bacon ... Yum!

NewtRipley · 29/06/2014 19:31

Hissy

I think AIBU should be re -designated a First World Problem area. It would be jollier.

Ragwort · 29/06/2014 19:38

YANBU - it is a pet hate of mine not to be given the exact piece of cake/slice of pie/slices of ham - whatever when I am being personally served.

I hate to make sweeping judgements but customer service is pretty awful in this country (and yes, I do work in customer service Grin).

This reminds me of my grandma years ago who asked for some nice looking apples at the back of the display in an old fashioned greengrocer - they were clearly fresher and better than the ones at the front of the display - the greengrocer replied 'they are all the same' my DGM was quick off the mark and said 'if they're all the same then it doesn't matter if I have the ones at the back does it' Grin.

I regularly buy cake from a lovely deli and I always point out the specific piece I want and am given it. Smile

greeneggsandjam · 29/06/2014 19:42

I once asked for a cake, pointed it out and was told that was just for the customers to look at. hmm. it was only a cupcake.

krasnayaplats · 29/06/2014 21:05

This reminds of a bakers shop near where I used to live. Staff were rude and when my exh complained they started talking about him in another language. Unfortunately or maybe fortunately he was multilingual and knew they were calling him a dick. He replied in their language, in uncompromising terms. Never really felt able to show face there after. Was torn because although the service was rotten the bread was lovely.
