To find the baby names thread bizarre?

boomoohoo · 29/06/2014 09:50

Why do people care what strangers think of their baby name choices? I find it fascinating (hilarious) that people ask advice re potential names of their offspring to complete strangers! Surely the people around you in RL can tell you whether it may suit / be appropriate given ur community or whatever.

I like posting on the baby names threads. I usually say the name is absolutely lovely. regardless I sometimes try and encourage people to use the name they love rather than worrying about what other people think. People overthink baby names a LOT and as for agonizing about middle names .... Confused

picnicbasketcase · 29/06/2014 13:55

Oh, I do like Formica. It sounds wipe clean, yet somehow exotic.

marared · 29/06/2014 14:07

They want to gauge opinion. To find out what people really think of their name choices. Often people in 'real life' are too polite to say, not so the Baby Names topic, and I'm not criticising them as it has to be a good thing Grin

But as far as name suggestions go there seems to be a general similar taste (with exceptions of course!) of names liked and suggested. Though I think you get that with other name-type forum places.

PresidentTwonk · 29/06/2014 14:07

The bit I find odd is when people ask for 'names that go with' eg; 'ds1 is called Toby and I'm pg with dd1 what names go with Toby?' I don't get why! Why do they have to 'go'? They aren't Bert and Ernie, people won't forever say their names together!

marared · 29/06/2014 14:08

I agree President.

marared · 29/06/2014 14:10

I wouldn't be swayed, boomoo. Though people often are it is true

boomoohoo · 29/06/2014 14:10

Don't get me wrong, of course I care what people think of me .. But people won't think badly / well of you based on your choice of name.. They'll either like it or not.. And you won't find a name to please everybody, so may as well just please yourself.

As for checking it doesn't mean something in a different dialect of the country or whatever.. I'm sure even Anne and Julie translate as 'wanker' in some far distant corners of the planet, that your offspring may find themselves in.. Again, if you like it who cares!?

I would definitely care if my name meant 'wank' in another country.

And I feel it my duty to inform anyone who is thinking of calling their daughter Pippa that it means wank/shag/blowjob in Italian/Swedish/Greek respectively.

I think most people would want to avoid calling their kid 'blowjob'.

Ah but Lego do you say HubREE, like the proper French way, or HubRISS?

marared · 29/06/2014 14:15

I think consensus about the name I asked about (a few years ago) was that it was pretentious, middle class and try hard. Grin
I used the name all the same, it works wonderfully for DC, and nobody has ever remarked about it in a negative fashion. But it was interesting to find out what a few strangers thought.

BomberManIsAGirl · 29/06/2014 14:23

Formica is indeed a lovely namebut only when its pronounced For-Mike-A.

For-Mick-A is well chavvy.

It's exciting discussing names and trying them out. I have genuinely seen some lovely names some terrible ones too suggested.

But YY to the 'names like Sarah' 'How about Dallas?' posts!

The other thing that drives me a bit mad when I read over there is the obsession with nicknames! I a, 32, have a fancy, three syllable name and have never been known by a nickname!

marared · 29/06/2014 14:34

No, nor has my DC. Her three syllable name is never shortened by anybody.

mytwoblackandwhitecats · 29/06/2014 14:40

I think some names have an obvious diminutive, such as Jess, Becky, nikki or nick.

But people don't usually (in my experience, anyway) call a Charlotte Lottie or Amelia Lia unless they've been called that since birth and the name on their birth certificate is a formality in a way. One of my great aunts was a Molly - I only found out at her funeral she was christened Mary!

Melons79 · 29/06/2014 14:47

I really like the baby names thread, it does help with the decision. Having said that, some of the names mentioned are very mumsnet. I have never net a little Ignatius, Pperegrine or even a little Rupert in real life.....

marared · 29/06/2014 14:51

Yes, fair point mytwoblackandwhitecats

dementedma · 29/06/2014 15:13

Its one of my favourite threads for bunfights and poncetastic-ness. A name for dc4..we already have Aurora,Lizardbreath,Cholmondley and chlamydia. What would go well?

waterducksback · 29/06/2014 15:29

It's funny when they say Tell me the Truth and
then you Tell them the Truth.

And they don't like it if you say you hate that name, and will get comments from other posters saying ''my great aunt's uncle's dog's owner was called that name! I hope you Burn in Hell for daring to criticize it! ''

Why ask if you only want to hear the 'good' comments. Confused

waterducksback · 29/06/2014 15:32

dementedma,
Even BETTER if its

Aurora-Bee
Lizardbreath-Bee
Cholmondley-Mae
Chlamydia-Mae

and a couple of hyphenated Jim-Bob's thrown in for good measure! [grin

Musn't forget those all important hyphenated, double- barrel hillbilly add ons.

waterducksback · 29/06/2014 15:34

Actually,

Anybody else think that
Chlamydia-Mae has a nice ring to it?

LookingThroughTheFog · 29/06/2014 15:42

I've liked all sorts of inappropriate names that people have had to point out to me.

'Lucifer. Nice ring to it. Lucifer - more interesting than plain Lucy...'

'Grendel - now there's a nice name for a little girl, don't you think?'

'Nym. I like Nym. What could Nym be short for?'

No, Foggy. Step away from all baby-name choices. For ever.

I'm not actually that stupid. It's just when you've been through all the baby names books and nothing seems quite right, and you're not agreeing with your partner who wants Amy, which is a name you've hated since Little Women, and was selected after an old girlfriend FFS, then eventually you start going down complicated avenues...

A couple of family members didn't like the perfectly ordinary name I chose for my daughter. It's ordinary and old name (Roman), but not the usual ones our family usually comes up with. Just 'that's not to my taste' gets a shrug of my shoulders. When people point out I'm being slightly out-there, then I take note.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 29/06/2014 15:56

Surely the people around you in RL can tell you whether it may suit / be appropriate given ur community or whatever

We haven't discussed names with anyone as I don't want people's opinions!
