I think you may have missed my point.

You can raise awareness as much as is humanly possible, but how will that put in place the support system needed to apply all of the laws, protections and other damned obvious fixes?

What is needed is well known, as the video says, lots of research, lots of reports, lots of breast beating and sound biting... but what has changed? It is the political will to see through any of the recommendations in any of the reports that is needed, not another round of 'make it the responsibility of Joe Public'.

I haven't signed the petition, as I can't find the actual wording of it on the website so don't know what I'm signing up to! The blurb on the site doesn't state exactly how they want the system to be redesigned, which strikes me as a bit odd.

Nomama · 28/06/2014 12:34

I've just gone back through the site, you're right, Sybil. I can't find the wording of it either.

The sign up is on the front page with no link or mention of where to find it. The Read More doesn't contain it either.

I don't think that anyone isn't aware that abuse can happen so what is it they are wanting to do in this instance? Have more people reporting abuse? Or to go into the situation themselves to try and stop it? Because if it's the first that's fine but you need to be able to deal properly with all the reports ss get at the moment.
I know I have reported two people in two different situations in one situation nothing was done ( that I knew of I should add) the next school year the child was taken off her but he had a good 9 months or so since I had reported of not being fed properly and going within himself whilst his mum carried on with her drinking.
The second time I was worried about physical abuse after a couple of incidents reported it nothing happened (this I do know as it was family) until a while later they got a visit after he was taken in with a broken nose and a crap story as to how it happened. Nothing's been followed up since to my knowledge.
My point is it is very fashionable to raise awareness but that does bugger all on its own to help a situation ss need more powers and less red tape not for people to be aware of something we all know about any way

You make some really valid points, I agree there is a lack of resources and a lack of the necessary political will. Many people are not as aware as you are though so I feel that awareness is a good place to start

I thought if you got 100,000 signatures on a petition it'll be debated in the House of Commons? Isn't that raising awareness? Isn't that telling the politicians, who we elect so they serve us, to do something about what we as the public are bothered about?

I think these politicians forget the order of things. We elect them to serve us. They need to do the things we want them to do otherwise they won't get re-elected. I think that simple process is broken in their minds and that they're running the show.

I read the subsequent posts before watching the video but even then, wouldn't have noticed the stereotyped angle. Maybe leafy suburbia should feature more in these ads?

I think I remember a domestic violence campaigned from about 20 years ago featuring vignettes of so called 'upstanding' 'pillars of the community' 'professional' men who were battering their wives behind the scene.

I found the absence of a child's face in a video called 'See the Child' to be quite striking. But assume that done deliberately for effect.

SquigglySquid · 28/06/2014 13:11

Politicians will make laws based on what their voters want to get another term. If they see their voters want a change in the system (as is shown via petition) and there is a high demand for it, they'll start focusing on it. But they need to know that this is an issues that a lot of people do care about.
