To think you should not be rewarded with Asda vouchers for paying your council rent on time?

Just that really. I can't believe they are rewarding people for paying rent in time!!

But loads of businesses offer rewards for paying early or on time. Why is it so bad when a council do the same?

Does it really matter if a few comfortable people benefit? It's probably saving the council a fortune. I know if I was struggling and had to choose between say, paying my TV late or my phone, I'd pay my TV late, because I get 10% off my phone bill for paying on time.

I think it's a bit genius, tbh. Those that really struggle don't have to choose between rent or food. Those don't struggle have no reason to whinge about those that do and have the added incentive to prioritise rent through tighter months. Win win.

KirjavaTheCat · 27/06/2014 23:01

These vouchers, did they happen to mention how much they were for?

And just because they aren't poor, doesn't mean these little incentives and helping hands aren't massively appreciated by those who face real difficulty in meeting their rent because they genuinely don't have a pot to piss in.

It has to be doing some good if it hasn't been picked up in the Daily Mail yet.

VampyreofTimeandMemory · 27/06/2014 23:01

what on earth makes you think I was directing my comment at you? talk about self-important.

I am arguing against ignorant snobbery, fyi.

WanderingAway · 27/06/2014 23:21

I am a HA tenant with a low income. I don't think people should be getting rewarded for paying their rent on time. Rent needs to be paid, you don't have a choice, you either pay it or get evicted.

dawndonnaagain · 27/06/2014 23:23

FFS. Some councils have an occasional prize draw into which you can be entered if you pay your rent on time for a specified period.
That's all. It's an incentive, in the same way that those who are in a position to be able to manage regular mortgage payments are offered different incentives.

shouldbeelsewhere · 27/06/2014 23:51

The housing association I rent from sends periodic rent statements. If you have no rent arrears, no antisocial behaviour and an up to date gas safety check you get put into a draw to win a £10 supermarket voucher (they let you choose tesco/sainsbury). Given the gas safety check costs way more than that giving one out of several thousand properties £10 saves money.

A man knocked on my council house door this week (how very dare I have a front door?) He wanted to do some work on my roof. Probably hundreds of pounds worth. I checked with him 3 times that he was sure. He said 'absolutely sure'. I said I was surprised because the council hadn't told me, so he offered to show me the order form.... For 3 doors down!

I should have let him get on with it, right? Except that I'm an honest council tenant, as are many.

AKeyFox · 28/06/2014 00:50

We have had 4 no shows (one of which time was because he was shagging a tenant opposite)

Now, that's an incentive scheme.Wink

usualnamechanger · 28/06/2014 01:07

I want those vouchers, I will take any vouchers: morrisons, sainsburys, waitrose, tesco, lidl, asda, harrods food hall, ocado etc.

But not aldi because it's too far from where I live Grin

ThatsYouThatIs · 28/06/2014 07:04

Darkesteyes, it's not acceptable for you to be treated like that by the HA/contractor. I've been a tenant and I know how annoying it is, having taken a day off work for a repair appointment only for them not to turn up.
The vast majority of tenants are like you and me and make time for the gas check but there are some that don't and it's these they're targeting with the vouchers as taking them to court for access to the property is not cheap.

musicalendorphins2 · 28/06/2014 07:33

I know someone who lived in a rough townhouse development, and the landlord would give any tenants who paid on time $100.00 off of that months rent. The person I knew was always getting behind in rent, and was evicted in the end. I guess landlords can get desperate.

ForalltheSaints · 28/06/2014 11:29

Incentivising prompt payment yes, not a reward that only supports larger stores and not smaller businesses.

Darkesteyes · 28/06/2014 14:25

Thatsyouthatis.

But when the HA/contractor doesn't turn up....its the same outcome. The safety check doesn't get done

Because a lot of LLs will pick the cheapest contractor available...

angelohsodelight · 28/06/2014 14:31

Bloody ridiculous!

Darkesteyes · 29/06/2014 21:48

Thatsyou heres the latest wheeze.

We had no flush on our toilet on 15/16 June so our landlord sent two blokes out to fix it.

This was around the same time that AW were digging up the street again because of the leaks.

When I first noticed the low pressure I asked DH if it could be our cheapo HA at fault "Don't be stupid" was the reply I got. I also told him about the gurgling sounds going through the pipes. "Its your imagination" was the reply I got. Followed by "its just an airlock" when he heard it himself the other night.
Well I ran tonights bath and there was FA water including nothing in the tank.
I called him in to the bathroom and showed him and said You think this is normal then? He finally checked the stopcock and it hadn't been turned on again properly by the blokes who fixed the toilet flush. After some adjustment it now seems to be working normally. FFS
