To think you should not be rewarded with Asda vouchers for paying your council rent on time?

Just that really. I can't believe they are rewarding people for paying rent in time!!

Going into my local ADSA is a punishment, not a reward.

Is that really happening?

Considering the cost of sending housing officers out repeatedly, the court costs, the admin costs etc..

The vouchers would be cheaper.

They shouldn't HAVE to be rewarding people to keep to their contract but obviously it's needed.

Plenty of people give discounts for prompt payment, isn't this similar?

People in council housing are often people who struggle financially.

Some people will have to make the choice of doing a shop or paying rent, and they'd rather they (or their kids) ate.

Giving ASDA vouchers might give them the inventive to pay their rent on time because they can still eat.

But no, yeah, it's probably just giving a random reward because scroungers etc. Count yourself thankful that you're so privileged this didn't occur to you.

Of course people who are on low incomes should not be rewarded financially. Let's take even more off of them

Yes it's happening. Well in my area it is. When are they going to reward me for paying my council tax on time? Might call my mortgage provider and ask them to reward me for paying my mortgage on time!

Feel like I've gone back to school when the naughty children would be good for one day and be rewarded and you look at the teacher as if to say "where is my reward for being good every day?"

Surely people in this position will get Housing benefit to pay their rent? If it could be paid direct to the LL, there would be much less need to reward people for something they should do automatically.

People whose HB has been reduced because they have a spare room might still struggle, but at least the tenant wouldn't be able to create so much debt in rent arrears.

I get rewarded from my mobile phone company for paying my bill early.

I get a whopping £3.30 pcm.

I think it's a brilliant idea, because of the reasons Saoirseba mentioned.

Having to choose between paying rent and doing the food shopping shouldn't happen, yet that is the reality for some. If this eases that burden then I'm all for it.

I'd hope those who are well off enough for them to never have to pay the rent late would consider refusing the vouchers, though. Or are they given out on a case-by-case basis?

I think it is cheaper to pay your council tax on time, isn't it? Because otherwise you get charged interest, don't you? And your mortgage, in the long run, in the sense that interest is calculated daily on the outstanding balance?

Actually we should get upgraded to Waitrose as we pay by DD, so most of the month we're actually in credit.

AFAIK the asda voucher scheme is like a crisis fund. So instead of someone having no choice but to go to a food bank run by volunteers, the Local Authority is getting on board and running this voucher scheme.

It's a good thing.

If someone is desperate enough to need a food bank, then they deserve the asda vouchers.

I could do with some vouchers, yes! And I can't link to the story as it isn't a story I've read. A relative said "yay, got my asda vouchers for paying my rent on time through today." Not sure what the criteria are or anything. They moved into a council house about 6 months ago.

But will Waitrose take them?

They both work and it is not a case of them not paying rent or eating.
