... Dark hair. I have tried it. Within 3 weeks the new growth is very visible. Then it has to grow a certain length before being redone. It's very expensive to keep having it done professionally, but the main issue is that my legs look ok for only approx 2 weeks per professional wax.

So... I am now waxing them myself, every few days to get rid of new growth. Legs look ok from a distance but wouldn't want them inflected in bright sunlight, lol! There are still several spare hairs that are visible in certain light. I can see this level of hair growth would be fine if I was fair, but I'm not.

What's the secret? Do I persevere?

Thanks for that link Lying, have just ordered myself some.
I used to use those years ago and they are fab, haven't seen them in ages.
I just started waxing as I'm fed up of shaving rash -first bikini wax yesterday wasn't as bad as I thought it would be!

NorksAreMesssy · 22/06/2014 08:07

I lied! I haven't got a silk epil at all!

I have "Philips HP6577/00 SatinPerfect Wet and Dry Epilator" perfectly brilliant and on Amazon at the moment very heavily discounted.

NorksAreMesssy · 22/06/2014 08:09

And the twirly hair remover face thingy is called an 'epistick'

YellowStripe · 22/06/2014 08:36

I can't 'work' my epi stick! Tried it on my eyebrows last night and managed to get nothing out except some fringe hairs!

doziedoozie · 22/06/2014 08:47

Laser treatment - www.sknclinics.co.uk/treatments-and-pricing/laser-hair-removal - expensive though.

DrSeuss · 22/06/2014 08:52

Immac- available from Poundland.

PixieofCatan · 22/06/2014 09:03

You have to be persistant. I have very dark, thick hair. I waxed my legs for a couple of years and by the end of that time the hair was much much thinner and I had some bald patches. This was years ago though and since then I've shaved when I've had to. A lot of the hair comes back darker again now, but it's much less evenly spread and less dense. This winter I'll be going back to waxing I think.

I also only ever did it at home with strips. I tried a tub of wax once and made such a mess that it was just getting silly! I've only once had it done professionally and she was a crap beautician, did my make up too and I looked like a clown. I'd also "spot wax" if patches came up before others when I did wax.

It took about six months of waxing as soon as they wewre long enough for mine to settle down when I started waxing, I started late one summer and did it through the winter.

I have a laser gun thing that I need to try use this summer when I shave as well, see if that helps!

japanese For some of us though, shaving means that the hair grows back to stubble within hours. Through my teens I wasn't allowed to wax, only shave, I'd shave in the morning before school, and by my afternoon PE lesson I'd have stubble.

I also can't shave every day, my legs get really dry and sore.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 22/06/2014 09:13

I am pale with dark hair

IPL - have boots machine, didn't really seem to work

Epilating - find it very painful. Will use as a top up between waxing

Wax strips - useful, but not great for large areas. Often get them cheap in B&M/Home bargains places.

Warm wax - my method of choice. Only use immac or the boots wax though. Others I've tried wouldn't wash off properly and made an awful mess.

Shaving - it's ok, but doesn't really agree with my skin.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 22/06/2014 09:27

I'm with Japanese Margaret on this one, if there was a better way to remove hair than shaving then men would be doing it!

Bunbaker · 22/06/2014 09:36

I have hairy legs if I don't keep on top of it, and have found waxing only keeps them hair free for a few days longer than shaving. I have tried epilating, but had awful ingrowing hairs no matter how much exfoliating I did. So I have just gone back to shaving. It is quick, cheap and easy.

neverputasockinatoaster · 22/06/2014 09:42

I have an epilator which is fab for lower legs and armpits.
Shaving gives me a horrible rash and lasts about ten minutes!
My upper legs and bikini line are a nightmare and I pretend they don't exist.
Mostly I wear trousers and skirts to my ankles so I'm a bit slack on the hair removing front!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 22/06/2014 10:29

Japanese... That's true, sad but true. I hadn't really thought that much about it because I could go out unwaxed and probably nobody would notice. I'm blonde, pale and not very hairy at all. If I were dark-haired I might not feel so brave. It's insidious, isn't it, this pressure that women are under because it is only women that are under it. :(

I have been using an episick on my face for years. I love mine. Used to wax and all sorts. Only use the stick now. Have even mastered doing eyebrows with mine.

Tanacot · 22/06/2014 10:59

Does no one like Veet/Immac? I do my legs every 4-6 weeks with cream and that's it. (Use a razor for my armpits every day)

Bunbaker · 22/06/2014 11:05

Chemical hair removers last no longer than shaving on me and is therefore far more expensive and full of chemicals that get into the water supply.

MrsGoslingWannabe · 22/06/2014 11:41

I'm lucky if I get a whole week of hair-free legs after waxing. It drives me mad! I have to tell DD that if she wants to go swimming it must be this week or wait another 4! I was thinking I'd try plucking any extra that appear but I guess this wouldn't work with the cycles. Grr, hair growth cycles, menstrual cycles - they can f* off!

Frogisatwat · 22/06/2014 11:48

I like how my legs feel when smooth. Its not so much societal pressure in my case lets not have a fanjo debate though

fatlazymummy · 22/06/2014 12:10

I go swimming all year round, so never let my hairs grow.
I use a lady shaver - it takes a couple of minutes and it's done for a few days. I have dark hair, though probably not as thick and dark as some people. Thankfully I've never had ingrowing hairs, which I can see would be a problem.
I use hair removing cream for my daughter (she has special needs so won't tolerate a razor).
I've never even been tempted to try waxing, I just don't get the point.

Tanacot · 22/06/2014 12:47

Oh that makes sense, if it doesn't last for other people. I thought it was a function of the cream!

Tanacot · 22/06/2014 12:54

Oh for me it's totally societal. I could not give two shits for myself, but I run/bike/swim every day and feel ashamed and self conscious when I have visible hair - this goes for bikini line (oh for a sportswear boyshort tankini that fits), armpits and legs. I don't judge other people - rather admire them - when they defy the convention, but after some thought and trying to go natural, I found that I curbed my activities and dress when I was hairy, and felt awkward all the time, so I surrendered this battle.

I don't know why this one defeats me - I don't habitually wear makeup and I'm happy to go around in flat shoes with cropped hair --a shaved head even, though I observe I was a lot happier to do that when I was younger and better looking. But the hair thing, I can't beat it. It's in deep.

ThisIsmySecretPassword · 22/06/2014 14:46

When I was younger I used wide packing tape. You smooth your hair down your leg and press a long strip of tape on. Then you roll the tape up your leg so that it rolls itself into little tubes. The hairs get rolled into the tape. It worked really well for me. Confused

However, as I mentioned earlier, the philips lumea thing from Boots is working brilliantly for me. My skin is pale and my hair is dark. It requires upkeep but there are no in growing hairs. It was v expensive but I am a total fan. My DDs are both dark haired too so I thought between the three if us it would be worth it.

MrsDavidBowie · 22/06/2014 14:50

Lasering..gone forever.

emms1981 · 22/06/2014 19:29

my legs are never smooth :( if i wax or shave i always have little spots on my legs anyone have any idea why that is?

thenightsky · 22/06/2014 19:54

I think it's normal to have little dots on your legs if you shave or yank hairs out by waxing, epilating etc. It's just that we are led to believe we should have smooth, even coloured skin due to seeing endless airbrushed photos in magazines etc.

Meglet · 22/06/2014 21:36

emms I think the black dots are the next baby hair starting to grow. I always get them.

It's funny how my skin can tolerate regular waxing but shaving makes it feel like acid has been poured over it.
