Taffy.

She is a Welsh Springer spaniel (and very cute).

I have asked a few of my friends and they say it's fine but I don't want to offend anyone.

I have googled Taffy and most of the results are sweets.

She will be walked in the local forest first thing in the morning between 7am and 8am so won't come into contact with too many other people. In fact it will mainly be at dog training classes and the vets (although I'd rather not go there too often).

So would appreciate your opinions please.

When I hear Taffy I think of the sweet. What am I missing?

hippoinamudhole · 21/06/2014 18:05

Taffy is a nick name for Welsh people in the same way the English are called Poms by Australians

Never heard of the word taffy

CundtBake · 21/06/2014 18:06

It instantly made me think 'racist term for welsh' but I'm not actually sure if it is a racist term? Just that the only times I've heard it used it's been meant in a racist way.

Andrewofgg · 21/06/2014 18:10

As in Taffy was a Welshman which I won't finish here. I don't think it is ever applied to a Welsh female so perhaps you are OK Smile but if you are worried just choose another name. The dog won't mind.

Topaz25 · 21/06/2014 18:16

OP you live in an area where that expression is common? I've never heard it. Since it also means something innocuous, the sweet, I would say it's ok but it depends whether you live in Wales!

Topaz25 · 21/06/2014 18:17

*do you

ElleCloughie · 21/06/2014 18:18

I used to know an old lady who was called Taffy. Never heard it used in connection with the Welsh apart from when she mentioned it could be used that way once in conversation. I think most people would think it's just a cute name for a dog.

SugarplumKate · 21/06/2014 18:20

My Dad was known as Taff (he was From Cardiff) for his whole life after leaving Wales. I don't see it as an offensive name.

Leeds2 · 21/06/2014 18:20

Could use Toffee, maybe, instead?

hippoinamudhole · 21/06/2014 18:24

I live in East Anglia so the other side of the country really.

Thanks for your comments

My uncle who does live in Wales called his dog taffy don't see the problem tbh I'm welsh btw.

Pipbin · 21/06/2014 18:32

A lot of ex-pat Welsh people I know get called Taff all the time, it's like calling a Scottish person Jock.
I don't think it's a offensive term. I think that there are only a few of us who know the rest of Taffy was a Welshman.

attheendoftheday · 21/06/2014 18:38

Sorry, I'd find it racist not sweet. I think Taffy is often used in a derogatory way.

Disclaimer - I am not Welsh so I recognize that those who are get to decide if they object to the name Taffy.

VivaLeBeaver · 21/06/2014 18:43

I'm welsh and wouldn't consider it an insult. A colleague at work is also Welsh and is known as Taffy. She likes the nickname and also doesn't consider it an insult. Obviously we can't speak for all Welsh people but I wouldn't bat an eyelid at the name Taffy.

hippoinamudhole · 21/06/2014 18:45

I think the consensus is that it's OK to call her Taffy.

Thank you

Another Welsh person here who wouldn't be bothered in the slightest. I've only ever heard it used in an affectionate way so it doesn't hold negative connotations for me. I think it's a sweet name for a dog.

Watercolourfootballs · 21/06/2014 18:50

Pip:

it's like calling a Scottish person Jock

I'm Scottish and I've been offended every time someone called me Jock.

TravellingToad · 21/06/2014 18:52

Taffy is fine, I'd use it happily

spiderlight · 21/06/2014 18:53

I'm Welsh. I've known several dogs, most owned by Welsh people, called Taff/Taffy and I can't imagine anyone being offended by it. It was also my dad's nickname in the RAF and he wasn't remotely offended. My only comment would be that it tends to be a male dog's name, but that doesn't really matter.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 21/06/2014 18:53

I'm Welsh and there's always some wag who calls me Taff. It's a bit old hat now though. Slightly derogatory I would say, a lazy stereotype like Paddy or Jock.

ShouldHaveMarriedTimDowling · 21/06/2014 18:54

Nooo you stole the name of my next dog or cat!

Fab fab name.

(Forriner here mind)

Clearlymisunderstood · 21/06/2014 18:57

I'm welsh and wouldn't consider it an insult at all. It's a cute name for a puppy actually Smile

hippoinamudhole · 21/06/2014 19:01

Personally I thought it may be a bit derogatory but hopefully not racist.

It seems most of the people who have taken the time to reply are Welsh and it is a minority who would object so I am not as concerned as I was

OP posts:
SaucyJack · 21/06/2014 19:04

I have heard it as a nickname for Welsh blokes before, but only ever affectionately.
