Taffy.

She is a Welsh Springer spaniel (and very cute).

I have asked a few of my friends and they say it's fine but I don't want to offend anyone.

I have googled Taffy and most of the results are sweets.

She will be walked in the local forest first thing in the morning between 7am and 8am so won't come into contact with too many other people. In fact it will mainly be at dog training classes and the vets (although I'd rather not go there too often).

So would appreciate your opinions please.

It used to be very offensive....

Taffy was a Welshman, Taffy was a thief;
Taffy came to my house and stole a piece of beef;
I went to Taffy's house, Taffy wasn't in;
I jumped upon his Sunday hat and poked it with a pin.
Taffy was a Welshman, Taffy was a sham;
Taffy came to my house and stole a piece of lamb;
I went to Taffy's house, Taffy was away,
I stuffed his socks with sawdust and filled his shoes with clay.
Taffy was a Welshman, Taffy was a cheat,
Taffy came to my house, and stole a piece of meat;
I went to Taffy's house, Taffy was not there,
I hung his coat and trousers to roast before a fire

If you thought it may be a bit derogatory, why are you okay calling your dog that?

hippoinamudhole · 21/06/2014 19:07

Now, I've never heard that before at all.

I don't find it derogatory, I worried people would think I was being derogatory

And I don't generally enjoy upsetting people

DH is from Swansea and hates being called a Taff as it's normally associated with Cardiff. Big rivals. Keep him East of Cardiff and you'll be fine.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 21/06/2014 19:25

not racist or derogatory. on the hospital ward at Birmingham children's my brother was on before he died, my brother's nurses made him a certificate of bravery, and they'd nicknamed him 'Taffy'. I treasure that certificate and the fact that they nicknamed him that.

LaVolcan · 21/06/2014 19:25

One of the neighbours' cats is called Taff. His owners are Welsh, so it obviously didn't bother them.

WashingFanatic · 21/06/2014 19:30

Taffy is a nick name for Welsh people in the same way the English are called Poms by Australians

This.

I'm Welsh, I know a few people with the nickname 'Taff' or 'Taffy'.

RiverTam · 21/06/2014 19:34

um, how can someone English be racist towards someone Welsh? Last time I checked English and Welsh are the same race. So, no, it is not racist.

I think it's fine. I wouldn't be offended if an Aussie called their puppy Pom.

Andrewofgg · 21/06/2014 19:39

grovel I wasn't going to quote it at length, you obviously have your flame-proof undies on!

Ludoole · 21/06/2014 19:45

When my ex used to take our cat to the vets, the vets called out the cats first name and ex's surname. Everyone smiled at his name- Paddy Ireland Grin

He was called Paddy because of the way he padded my chest before sleeping.

mermaidstale · 21/06/2014 19:52

Taffy is an English way of saying Daffyd, which is David, so not suitable for a girl.
Taffy is also American for toffee, which would be ok.

Megan46 · 21/06/2014 19:59

I'm Welsh, live in Wales and my previous dog was Taffy . He lived to be 17 and no one ever commented that it was insulting, racist or derogatory when I was calling him. I have also had friends called Taffy . It's definitely an affectionate name here !

Thanks everyone
