There is a massive park area playing fields play park. As I was coming through outside of park area was a Rottweiler, very big dog laying on a grass verge between park entrance and main road. It's a very hot day here, the dog looked very hot. The dog was out of view of the actual playing park and about 100 yards from the playing park and so It appeared no one was with the dog, it appeared very much on it's own.

Just wondered what other pesters would have done? So I can judge if I was UR.

give it a drink if I was able.

DeepThought · 21/06/2014 17:44

I dunno really

Our dog wardendoesn't work weekends so maybe rspca if dog looked distressed?

Topaz25 · 21/06/2014 17:45

I would have kept an eye on things to check the owner wasn't round the corner then called the dog warden. I like dogs so I might have tried to approach and see if the dog was friendly so I could give him some water but I understand that not everyone would feel comfortable doing that.

Topaz25 · 21/06/2014 17:47

Oh I didn't think about dog warden not working weekends, maybe a charity then.

Topaz25 · 21/06/2014 17:49

I'd also check the collar for the owners details if the dog was friendly.

DeepThought · 21/06/2014 17:51

I don't much like dogs, wouldn't go anywhere near so no tag checking or even offering water from moi I'm afraid

I KNOW rottie's are supposed to be softies etc but still.

Alisvolatpropiis · 21/06/2014 17:56

Not really sure. I carry a portable water bottle thing designed for dogs (because I have dogs not randomly) so if it had seemed friendly I would have gone over and put that for the dog to drink from.

Perhaps checked it's collar.

It may well have run off after some scent and left the owners a way behind (not ideal but it can happen).

Possibly owners were in the play park and had let it run around off lead. Very irresponsible but I've seen it happen.

Kleptronic · 21/06/2014 18:09

What did you do, OP?

GreenPetal94 · 21/06/2014 19:24

I think I'd do nothing, dogs pant when they are hot but I'm sure the owner wasn't far and would have taken the dog home and given it a drink

KnackeredMuchly · 21/06/2014 19:35

Go over, wair for an owner, offer him a dog biscuit, check for a collar and tag. Try and get someone else to help me take him to water etc.

KaFayOLay · 21/06/2014 19:41

I would check he was okay, contacted owners if number on tag.
Failing that, I'd have taken him home and sorted out care for him from there.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 21/06/2014 19:51

Seen if he was okay. Given him a drink, contacted owners if he had a tag.

I've twice ended up with random lost dogs in our home which my cats just lived.

Frontier · 21/06/2014 19:55

I can honestly say it wouldn't have occurred to me to do anything

wonderingsoul · 21/06/2014 20:00

Find a different way home...

I wouldn't go near it.

I'd wait a fair bit a way then if no one turned up I'd phone 101

ModreB · 21/06/2014 20:16

If it was approachable, I would have talked to it, tried to give it a drink, checked the collar for contact details, checked its paws to see if it had been running a long time, if it seemed to have been running called RSPCA and police and restrained until they or the owner had got there, or secured it (I always have a spare lead with me - long story).

If not approachable, called Police and RSPCA. And warned other people until they got there.

But, I am a dog person and like most dogs. Dogs are great. Dog owners are sometimes crap.

LST · 21/06/2014 20:17

Go and see if it had a collar. Sit give it a drink and watch it for a while.

What did you do op?

Haroldplaystheharmonica · 21/06/2014 20:18

I would have given it a wide berth, walked home and not given it a second thought. That's just me though, I'm not an animal person and Rottweilers scare the crap out of me.

Alisvolatpropiis · 21/06/2014 20:20

I suspect, but of course could easily be wrong, that op didn't stop to check on the dog.

Not judging, Rottweilers are big dogs and if one is unfamiliar with dogs in general never mind the larger breeds that could be very off putting.

Nobody is perfect.

TheWholeOfTheSpoon · 21/06/2014 20:23

I wouldn't have gone anywhere near it. I love dogs but Rotties terrify me ever since my stupid friend's Rottie bit me.

D0oinMeCleanin · 21/06/2014 20:27

Run away and then send dd2 back with a dish of water and instructions to go and try to find it's owner. I have an irrational and overwhelming fear of rotties. Dd2 seems quite partial to them.

I'd then ring the OOH dog warden if the owner couldn't be found.

TheWholeOfTheSpoon · 21/06/2014 20:49

Do you think the OP went for the "Take dog home" option and is now pinned up against the wall of her living room?! Grin

hellskitty · 21/06/2014 21:09

Ring the police.I wouldn't give a stuff about the dog's safety, but I would care about the safety of people round about.

FreudiansSlipper · 21/06/2014 21:21

Call 101 what irresponsible owners

A dog that size can defend itself it am more concerned about children

D0oinMeCleanin · 21/06/2014 21:24

A dog that size cannot defend itself from cars or over heating. Most dogs that size wouldn't defend themselves from thugs either.
