To be pissed off with people in petrol station...

zeezeek · 20/06/2014 21:19

I probably am. I usually am. But here goes.

Was in the petrol station this morning as DH borrowed my car, used all the petrol and didn't bother to replace it despite now being retired and having more time than me, the git. I was on my way to a seriously important meeting and got stuck behind a variety of people who:

  • decided that they had to do their week's shopping in the petrol station shop
  • then had to check their messages and reply to them before starting the engine
  • had to sort out/fuss over young children (ok I have sympathy and understanding with this one!)
  • had to re-apply lippy and other make up
  • just seemed to take so fucking long to get in their car, get it started and get the fuck out of the petrol station.

It annoyed me.

That doesn't always work. the angle of the pipe in my car is wrong so the gun gets trapped in the hole.

specialsubject · 22/06/2014 12:57

it's all very odd, isn't it? Fill up car, go pay, leave. Don't be surprised when asked for money as appears to happen with some people in supermarkets.

this is the same as the check-in queue for a flight. The people in front take FOREVER, but when I eventually get there it takes a minute if that.

what is so complicated about everyone else? What am I missing?

Wellwellwell3holesintheground · 22/06/2014 13:35

OK. I have owned 7 different cars of varying sizes in the course of 20 years of driving. I have never found one that can't be filled at both sides. Guess I'm just lucky!

Wellwellwell3holesintheground · 22/06/2014 13:36

Boneyback - I now compulsively need to know what you drive!

Charlieboo30 · 22/06/2014 13:40

I once went to sainsburys which had a very boastful sign telling people they had extra long petrol hoses and they would reach either side. Great. Until I tried and nearly pulled the petrol pump with it! Had to drive round again and was so embarrassed. Never again - I'd rather just wait. If it infuriates you, tough.

People who dither about annoy me. Luckily where I usually fill up has seven pumps and the 'shop' sells milk and sweets. That's about it. Never usually have to wait long.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 22/06/2014 13:44

YANBU. It's just inconsiderate to everyone queuing to get petrol then do the weekly shop.

Wellwellwell3holesintheground · 22/06/2014 13:48

Charlie - what car do you drive?

Charlieboo30 · 22/06/2014 13:53

Toyota Aygo now but back then I think I had my Renault Clio. And it wasn't just me - man behind me (lovely guy) could see my rage and got out to 'help'. He couldn't get it to work either. Both tiny cars!

neiljames77 · 22/06/2014 13:56

Not after a pat on the back or anything but if someone is waiting behind me, as soon as I've filled up I move the car forward to let them get to the pump, then I go and pay.
The only downside is that the cashier thinks I'm about to do a runner.

TheMuppetsIsWhereIShouldBe · 22/06/2014 13:59

why does everyone have to go to the pump that their petrol cap is on -.- THEY STRETCH

neiljames77 · 22/06/2014 14:08

TheMuppetsIsWhereIShouldBe - because if you've just cleaned your car, you don't want that dirty pipe to touch and if the drops haven't been shaken off properly they can drip on the body.

IloveJudgeJudy · 22/06/2014 14:11

These threads do make me laugh. So many people on here are getting so het up about something relatively trivial!

In our local Esso/Tesco, you have to queue up with all the customers to pay for your petrol. The pump cannot be used until you have paid as it can't be released. If you don't want to get the cheap petrol, and wait, at places like this, then go to dedicated petrol stations. I bet some of you who are complaining have also bought stuff in the shop while waiting to pay. Smile

fifi669 · 22/06/2014 14:17

I worked in petrol stations for years. They had a policy that if someone drive off without paying it came out of your wages unless you managed to write down the registration etc. People moving off pumps to be helpful would fill me with fear!

I don't think you can really get arsey when people buy a few things in the shop, though I totally agree that once you're done and in the car you should pull away to use your phone/eat etc.

neiljames77 · 22/06/2014 14:27

I'll agree it's not something that winds me up that much. What I find much worse is being behind someone at the lights who waits for them to go green, THEN decides to put the right indicator on.

BillnTedsMostFeministAdventure · 22/06/2014 16:09

"The pump cannot be used until you have paid as it can't be released."

I always assumed that was the case.

BoneyBackJefferson · 22/06/2014 16:59

wellwellwell

At the time it was a Vauxhall astra estate, It also sticks with a vw camper van, (both older cars).

But it should be noted that not only are the fuel pipes on vehicles different so are the pump dispensers at petrol/fuel stations.

sillystring · 22/06/2014 17:22

YANBU. What exactly is it about purchasing petrol that turns people into selfish, dittering bastards. Even my DH does it. He came out of one recently with 10 packets of window wipers that had been reduced to 20p each. Because they were reduced, the till clerk had to put every one through individually with a stupid code. There was a queue of about 20 people behind him, foaming at the mouth. He was oblivious and stupidly happy with his "bargain". You guessed it...they didn't fit our car.

MrsMook · 22/06/2014 17:37

Having stupidly small hands, it's hard enough gripping the lever on the petrol pump. I can't manage doing it on the wrong side of the car too. A shame because my petrol cap is the more popular side.

I find it frustrating that one oetrol sration near me is both pay at pump and in the shop, so you pay at the pump, then still get stuck behind a faffer in the shop. I can't imagine that many peopke have to go in to use cash, and there's not much in there.

AdeptusMechanicus · 22/06/2014 23:42

zeezeek Could you keep a jerry can in the boot with extra fuel to prevent situations such as this ?

PrimalLass · 23/06/2014 06:37

YANBU. It's just inconsiderate to everyone queuing to get petrol then do the weekly shop.

Then petrol stations shouldn't be "mini markets" too.

We had a long thread about all of this the other week.

Tanith · 23/06/2014 06:59

Had someone on Saturday glowering at DH because he'd finished filling up and didn't move forward to let her on.

It was one of those very wide stations with plenty of room between the pumps - why on earth she didn't just drive round us and use the pump in front Confused

londonrach · 23/06/2014 07:44

You not allowed to move your car until you have paid for the petrol so some of the remarks are incorrect. The texting is wrong

VivaLeBeaver · 23/06/2014 07:48

Also when I'm at the second pump in the line filling up, nearly done. The car which was in front of me leaves. So the car waiting behind me decides to squeeze through the tiny gap and get in front of me.

Not one of the petrol stations with masses of space between the rows which is designed for this.

I then can't get past him. Which was obvious. So he can't be arsed to wait for me to finish even though I was there first, but thinks its ok to make me wait? I gave him a piece of my mind! Grin

Minnieisthedevilmouse · 23/06/2014 07:51

Well if I've waited ages for a pump myself why should I hurry just because you are behind me?

Failing to plan is planning to fail. If dh is not helpful with petrol check your car first....?

HKat · 23/06/2014 09:28

The one nearest me has just reopened with a Little Waitrose attached. It dues have some pay at pumps but judging by the queues I've seen so far, they've massively underestimated how popular the shop alone will be - despite the fact there's a fairly large car park attached for non-petrol purchasers! Some peoples even to do a substantial shop in there so I think a petrol only aisle may be on it's way...
