Pop to the splasheries my lambs and after you've brushed your hair till it shines we'll have a quick practice of 'I sing of Margaret so fair'.

Once we've finished casting the movie, that is....

I know what you mean about the drugging Lonny I'm working my way through the transcripts and becoming increasingly concerned about Stacie who has been immobile for about five books to allow the muscles in her back to 'heal'. Great medical advice there Dr Jem! They must have atrophied away long ago. It's all getting a bit Misery

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 29/06/2014 17:32

Arf at 'it's all getting a bit Misery'.

Esp as the Faithful Anna is now so firmly Dawn French in my head, and didn't French and Saunders do a Misery take off? Brilliant.

In Tom Tackles, she - Tom - reads one of Jo's books and "sniffs at the very mild love-making scenes".

Why is Matey giving her such books? Why is Jo writing such books? Why do all moral codes have an exemption clause when the Jo is involved?

JoeyMaynardsghost · 29/06/2014 18:12

I don't think "love-making" in books back then meant doing the deed shagging I believe it was more the mills and boon-esque "and he kissed her tenderly" followed by a row of

JoeyMaynardsghost · 29/06/2014 18:13

followed by a row of dots. Leaving it to your imagination.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 29/06/2014 18:56

Oh. Well, in that case I shall too. Grin

SolidGoldBrass · 29/06/2014 19:06

Tinuviel - a Morris dancer? Cool. You might like this book which is perhaps the nly one of its kind - an erotic novel about Morris dancers... Smuggle that one into school Wink

desertgirl · 29/06/2014 19:31

I'm not even sure it meant kissing and rows of whatever; some of the books of that sort of era seem to talk about slightly soppy conversation as being 'love making'

Happydaysatlast · 29/06/2014 19:37

Still thinking Gina McKey for Joey, Dawn French for Anna, Jane horrocks for Rosalie Dene and the rest as per Lonnys list.

Happydaysatlast · 29/06/2014 19:38

Jennifer Saunders, Nancy Willmot.?

Tinuviel · 29/06/2014 19:47

Thanks, Solid! Sounds like a hoot! It's been years since I've morris danced - it was a ladies' side but a lot of the DHs (not mine!) were in a men's side which was on The Fast Show and shouted 'Arse'. That is my one claim to fame!

Tinuviel - my one memory of Morris is the group who did the Stick and Bucket dance at the Discworld Jamboree a few years back.

Have been away with friends climbing mountains (only I didn't) and enjoying various crafty things this weekend. We didn't swim in a lake as it was too cold though.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 29/06/2014 20:11

Right, here's another one... in Lavender, Jack comes back from the war just before Christmas, yet Joey dyes herself green and pops out a wean by Easter???? This cannot be... Saucy minx has been having it away with Jockerel then luckily Jack came home in time and thanks to the ignorance of all things childbirthy, she passed it off as his???

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 29/06/2014 20:31

No, no, Lonny, didn't you notice all the references in Highland Twins to Jo being very Wink busy? Daisy was oblivious but Jo was fairly sure Robin understood what was expected in the spring? She was preggers before Jack went missing, hence all the resting on a sofa after the telegram comes.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 29/06/2014 20:38

Love-making scenes: I give you the Solid Lump of Comfort scene. That's what EBD thinks of as mild love-making. I wonder what a passionate love- making scene would look like?

Jack crushed Joey to his manly chest, oblivious to her earphones digging into him. "Oh my dear," he muttered brokenly. "I thought I had lost you."

Joey raised her face to his. "Oh Jack," she whispered. "I'm right here and safe. What's more, I've got something to tell you."

"Joey! You can't mean..."

"Yes. Dr Graves/Courvoisier/other non-obstetrician confirmed it today. We're going to have quads, at long last!"

Vintagejazz · 29/06/2014 20:49

I'm currently reading Lavender and in it EBD says that Hilary Burns had spent Christmas with her 'future husband's family'.

But Hilary Burns didn't meet Peter Graves and get engaged to him until Carola Storms the Chalet School which was set at least six years later Confused.

I agree that the description of Peggy when she meets the Wintertons is uber annoying. In fact, Peggy comes across as a nice but very dull girl in these books. There's no spark or edge to her at all.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 29/06/2014 20:50

But but but hadn't he been away for months before he went missing?

It doesn't add up Too my lamb...

LittleBearPad · 29/06/2014 21:08

I think Hilary Burn's fiancée was killed in the war and then she met Phil Graves years later. I have no idea which book I think I read this in.

Vintagejazz · 29/06/2014 21:19

Thanks LitleBearPad.

hels71 · 29/06/2014 21:34

I also recall reading that Hilary's fiancee was killed in the war and Evvy's too.

SolidGoldBrass · 29/06/2014 22:38

I'm sure I recognize that team. Not Blackheath, is it?

Tinuviel · 30/06/2014 00:25

No, Richmondshire - don't even know if they are still around. It was all a very long time ago.

mummytime · 30/06/2014 07:53

I've just re-read Oberland, and the thing that jumped out at me is that Edna would probably be diagnosed with Asperger's nowadays. Which means EBD is almost certainly drawing her from someone or some people she knew. Maybe this is why despite all the failings I still like the books so much. I also think her having been a teacher (however good or otherwise) really helped her writing.
Admittedly she falls a bit flat when she loses interest in a character (Verity-Ann) or turns someone into a plaster saint.

Happydaysatlast · 30/06/2014 08:12

Edna whose Edna feeling ill as can't recall one. Please advise. Know an Elma!

In peace by Kathleen bruce, very good read, she inserts a killed fiancée for Hilary to cover up an EBDism.

I always assumed Steve was concieved when Jack came home invalided from the war in highland twins?

Anyway no one had access to a gynaecologist did they! Just the San doctors having a go. Grin
