That's it really, I'm toying with the idea of giving up booze (wine) for good as when I sit and think about the pros and cons, the latter far outweigh the former, seemingly more so as I get older.

And yes, I drink far too much wine, have far too many groggy starts to the day, and am carrying faaaaar to many extra pounds (and I don't mean £).

I see my DCs running round, laughing until they're crying, taking great pleasure in the simple things in life and it's got me thinking.... why does a meal out have to include a bottle of wine, why does watching a football match have to include a few beers.... you get the picture.

I want clarity back, I want to enjoy every day and I'm starting to think this May be far easier without this headache inducing drug?

YANBU. I stopped drinking for 6 months and I felt great. I'm trying to get the courage to do it again, it's not easy.

MrsBigginsPieShop · 18/06/2014 23:31

Because kids don't usually have kids to look after, mortgages to pay, bosses to impress, houses to keep clean, bills to pay, family events to plan, money worries, meals to cook, friends to keep in touch with, dresses to slim in to.....(shall I go on?) :)

Seriously though, I don't think a small glass of wine once a week is a problem. Do try cold turkey as you will feel fab after the first horrible bit. But also don't beat yourself up if you do fancy a glass...

Paq · 18/06/2014 23:31

Kids don't have to worry about mortgage payment, annual appraisals, Middle eastern politics, the bitch next door who parks over your drive, the really slow person ahead of you in the supermarket queue or rapidly sagging boobs.

If I could spend the day messing about in a sand pit I wouldn't drink Wine either.

Paq · 18/06/2014 23:31

Awesome cross post Grin

SecretRed · 18/06/2014 23:38

I drink because work, family finances etc make my very uptight. Wine makes me chill the fuck out!

fanjobiscuits · 18/06/2014 23:39

Because they don't have to put a toddler to bed.

EBearhug · 18/06/2014 23:39

We don't. Some people just find it easier with.

We also don't need alcohol to make idiots of ourselves. Well, I don't. I can be stone cold sober. At least with alcohol, you've got an excuse.

Garcia10 · 18/06/2014 23:42

If I didn't work and didn't hate my job I wouldn't drink. It is what makes my life just about bearable.

The lottery winning me will be a teetotal, size 8 with an amazing complexion and perfect teeth.

Apatite1 · 18/06/2014 23:42

I don't drink, so I'm with the kids here!

LaurieFairyCake · 18/06/2014 23:42

Because we're paying for those wee fuckers to dance around gaily Hmm

CallMeExhausted · 18/06/2014 23:42

Because it is still socially acceptable for kids to spin in circles until they are so dizzy that they fall down and laugh... and laugh... and laugh...

Adults are supposed to have stopped that, so we have to buy a couple pints to get the same effect Grin

ouryve · 18/06/2014 23:43

Because kids don't have to care about so much.

Singlesuzie · 18/06/2014 23:49

We dont need alcohol to have fun but alcohol itself induces a nice fuzzy feeling. It's like asking why do we eat cake- we eat it because we like the taste. We (or I do anyway) drink because we like the feeling.

Boomerwang · 18/06/2014 23:50

I wish I was a kid again. About 3 years old would do, when I'm too young to notice negative things and old enough to run around on my own feet and use the loo rather than poo in a nappy. All I'd care about is whether or not I get an ice cream for pudding, how many stones I can fit in a plastic cup, if my nan has a pound for me and what I can spend it on, whether I get to wear my new shoes to daycare, chasing my shadow around and getting kissed to death by my daddy. That'd be nice.

BackforGood · 18/06/2014 23:50

Well, not everybody does. I've managed to watch lots of games without any beer Grin

However, I'd say I do drink alcohol, not because I need it, but because I enjoy it.
To stick with your comparison, kids don't need water pistols, but life's a lot more fun with them Wink

Of course, the thread becomes different if you find you actually do need alcohol, then that's a different thing altogether.

OorWullie · 18/06/2014 23:51

I pretty much gave up drinking when i had my son five years ago. I have a few glasses of wine (2-3) about twice a year.

I must say I don't miss it one bit for someone who used to drink heavily at least three/four nights a week. I can go out and have a really great time without it. I never have that "could do with a drink" feeling.

But that's just me, plenty of people find it a great way to loosen up and unwind, i think it depends on the individual.

SquidgyMaltLoaf · 18/06/2014 23:51

I don't need alcohol to have fun. I just like the taste of wine!

Scarletohello · 18/06/2014 23:57

Because as adults we don't play, we suppress our feelings, we don't say what we mean, we're often a bit jaded and not excited by the world around us, life can be hard, disappointing and depressing.

Also kids have sweets and pop!

Boomerwang · 18/06/2014 23:59

Sometimes I have more fun when I'm not drinking and everybody else is. I have to be in a certain atmosphere, though, such as a club. I go around making sure my friends are okay and I roll my eyes at their antics but I feel good that I'm watching out for them and I laugh at their silliness when they're drunk.

However, if it's a bbq party or something and I'm the only sober one I get irritated with their stupidness and how I don't see the funny side like they do. Never fun to be the sober one then.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 19/06/2014 00:22

I don't need it. Sometimes it's an added bonus.

I don't need to go bowling to have fun, but once in a while it makes for a great night out.

I don't need to drink alcohol to have fun, but once in a while it makes for a great night out.

Same thing really. It isn't a necessity, it's an optional extra Grin

PrincessBabyCat · 19/06/2014 00:39

Ok, I will bite the bullet. Send all your unwanted alcohol to me and I'll drink it. It won't be easy, but I'll do it for you. Wink

partialderivative · 19/06/2014 01:27

Can you imagine a playtime if kids were allowed to drink?

WaitingForMyMam · 19/06/2014 04:23

Can you imagine a playtime if kids were allowed to drink?

Don't they do that in France? And no one in France has a drinking problem.

I think that's right, anyway.

Xmasbaby11 · 19/06/2014 05:33

We don't need it, but I find it enjoyable. A decent glass of wine is a pleasure. If drunk in moderation, I believe alcohol is fine. I drink a lot less these days with two littlies, but I don't think about giving up completely.

HeyMicky · 19/06/2014 05:41

Because it's delicious WineWineWineWine
