To let my 6 year old stay up to watch the football on Thursday?

Just that really. I am aware that as issues go this is not a big one, but I'm having an indecisive moment! He is really into his football, and it is obviously an important game. He is normally in bed by 8ish, so may well be a little grumpy at school on Friday as a result of being up until 10 or so to watch the game. But then it is only one day and he'll have the weekend to recover. So am I?

What time is kick off. I let my ds 11 stay up last match but it ran into a Sunday

idontlikealdi · 18/06/2014 13:48

My DH still talks wistfully of the time in the 1986 world cup when he was woken up at 10pm and allowed to come down and watch one of the England games. It was a defining moment to him and his football obsession. He was 9, so yes, if he loves it, let him stay up!

chocoholic05 · 18/06/2014 13:48

I'm having exactly the same dilemma. Mine are aged six and eight. They both need/like their sleep and get very grumpy and difficult to get up if they have a late night. However both say they want to watch the match Thursday night. No answers sorry I feel your dilemma!

squoosh · 18/06/2014 13:50

I'd let him stay up till he nodded off.

Canthisonebeused · 18/06/2014 13:50

I would tbh. I have been letting my dd stay up for the majority of late games, but not last night way too tired and I must say though this morning she was hanging. So I will just play it be ear for the remainder but I'll let her on Thursday.

MasqueradeWaltzer · 18/06/2014 13:52

YANBU, it's 8 o'clock kick off, isn't it? Not 11, like the other day. And I'd bet good money he won't be the only child yawning in class on Friday morning ;).

WorraLiberty · 18/06/2014 13:52

He's only got to get through Friday so I would if he really wants to

gimcrack · 18/06/2014 13:55

Make him pack his bag, lay out his clothes and have a bath. Then give him a lie-in, quick brekkie and steam him out of the house the next day. Or let him watch til half time.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 18/06/2014 13:58

Look, if you are a football fan it's an important match. Let him stay up - it's only a dilemma once every four years. If it's a crap game he may well take himself off to bed in disgust anyway :)

JohnFarleysRuskin · 18/06/2014 14:01

My problem is, if the 6 yr old stays up, the 5 yr old will want to stay up too, (and won't watch nicely) Dilemmas, dilemmas.

aquashiv · 18/06/2014 14:04

Gosh there is no way in this world I wont let mine. Besides it will all be over soon .

Booooooooooooooooooooooooo · 18/06/2014 14:18

Oh you've got to haven't you?

YANBU!

Flexibilityiskey · 18/06/2014 14:25

Hmm, I'm thinking I probably will, but I do feel sorry for the teacher on Friday. He is one of those children who, whatever time he goes to bed, will still be wide awake by 7am, hence I am usually careful to get him to bed early on school nights. We watched the first game on iplayer, at 7am on the Sunday morning as there was no way I could have stayed awake long enough to watch that, let alone him.

I think if the 5 year old isn't interested and won't sit and watch you either need to just be firm and sent the 5 year old to bed being the worst mother ever Grin or set the rule if up sitting watching nicely, no warnings and they will go to bed if they don't watch football.

I do day this to my dd, the reason she's up is to watch football anything not related to the match then it's bed. So far it's not been needed as she has actually sat and wAtched.

teaandthorazine · 18/06/2014 14:33

Yes, let him stay up. I know six is little, but it'll be done and dusted by 10pm and it's Friday the next day. Just make sure he gets the chance to catch up over the weekend if he needs it.

It's my ds's birthday so there's no chance of getting out of it for me! (He'll be 11 though so...) It's not exactly a regular thing and, who knows, it might even be a decent game!

olaflikeswarmhugs · 18/06/2014 14:35

I would totally let him stay up to watch it !

olaflikeswarmhugs · 18/06/2014 14:36

And I say that as a Scot with absolutely no interest in English football GrinGrin

MezleyM · 18/06/2014 14:41

TBH, I have let DS (8) stay up most nights to watch football...he tends to fall asleep quite quickly though! I'm sure he will stay awake for England though! His teacher is a massive fan and has been encouraging all the boys in their football obsession.
And our au pair is Spanish...she's not quite recovered from last Friday yet...

ComposHat · 18/06/2014 14:42

I was exactly the sane age as your son during Mexico 86 and can still remember being woken by my dad so I could watch yhe England match.

It was great I remember everything being so vivid and colourful on the TV. I remembrr being captivated by the football, but mostly by this place far away that was bright and exciting and hot and noisey.

squoosh · 18/06/2014 14:43

I remember all of Ireland sitting up one night to watch Barry McGuigan win something.

Canthisonebeused · 18/06/2014 15:46

I'd like to hope your ds teacher is equally encouraging the girls football obsessions to compos

Canthisonebeused · 18/06/2014 15:47

Sorry compos that was in response to mazley
