To take DS out of school for 4 days next year?

We came back from our family summer holiday last Sunday, 2 weeks in Cyprus at the Holiday village and we absolutely loved it so want to book again asap while we can benefit from the free child place as ds2 is 2 next year so we will have to pay for him too. We went on the 24th May this year and our holiday cost a fortune, no free child place and £1600pp aswell as our wedding in Cyprus on top of this Smile
So we had a look and it's over £1000 cheaper to leave on Thurs the 28th May next year and a free child space but ds1 whose 7 and will start Juniors next year will miss 4-5 days off school and I'm unsure wether to book. We've never had a holiday in term time before and his attendance is great, he's doing really well with all his work and with how much everything cost this year we'd be unable to pay extra to go on the 24th this year so would have to miss out Sad
IABU if i book this holiday as I'm feeling really unsure about it all and would like some advice as to what you would all do?
TIA

Oh well wouldnt say its done me any harm

Except that it's clearly left you with a total disregard for rules that are there for everyone, you included.

The3Bears · 16/06/2014 09:41

Oh bore off, seriously some of the responses on here are just pathetic!
Peterparkersays I'm taking him for 2 weeks 10 days of which falls over half term and 4 days term time! I paid a ridiculous amount this year to go all over half term so don't start saying i should put my childs education before holidays, i was only asking if people thought it was a bad idea as a one off next year, i didn't think 4 days would have that much of an impact in the grand scheme of things!
Also for the record I would be going the year after in half term or the summer holidays as this year we can't afford the extra as we've just got married, plus considering we've just got back from 2 weeks there with a 21 month old who loved sitting in his pram while we walked to tomb of kings etc and absolutely loved it I'm not worried at all about taking a nearly 3 year old there!!

Some rules aren't right. We're not all sheep. This rule is ridiculous and a sledgehammer to crack a nut ie it's to stop a minority of parents from regular truanting.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 16/06/2014 09:42

Not read beyond page 1.

OP you obviously want to go and cab justify it to yourself. You were hoping that others on here would agree with you. This hasn't been the case.

Pretend you'd never started this thread and get booking.

melissa83 · 16/06/2014 09:44

Rhonda - I see that as good that as a good thing Wink

Retropear · 16/06/2014 09:44

Plenty of other threads where the maj would agree with you, just do a search then book and enjoy.

melissa83 · 16/06/2014 09:44

I see all the politicians and the elites are going away in term time just the sheep arent allowed.

dietcokeandcadburys · 16/06/2014 09:44

The solution is simple. Go on a cheaper holiday next year or go for a shorter length of time, then the year after when you can afford it go back to Cyprus for 2 weeks in the school holidays. No ones saying you shouldn't go on holiday, just that you shouldn't go in term time.

MasqueradeWaltzer · 16/06/2014 09:47

BIG mistake to mention the price of the holiday, OP Grin.

I'm on the fence about term time holidays (live in a town with military and seasonal workers) but I do think in this case YABU.

SuburbanRhonda · 16/06/2014 09:56

Some rules aren't right. We're not all sheep

I couldn't agree more, retro. However, I don't believe the way to challenge a rule you think is wrong is to lie about your reasons for flouting it (we can't afford to go in the holidays, my kids were sick, Disneyland is educational and so on).

OP, do check they're not doing optional Year 3 SATs when you plan to be on holiday. That's when we did them. You may not care, but your Ds's teacher will.

ComposHat · 16/06/2014 09:56

Dh thinks we should just book it, in fact he thinks your all abit crazy.

Well the Oracle has been consulted and has given his judgement.

In the light of your husband's contribution will have to totally change my views on the topic and even my entire world view.

op Maybe if I give you a list of my views on politics, social policy, world poverty, the environment and whether Wayne Rooney should start on the left against Uruguay you could ask you Confucius like husband and he can tell me what to think?

Look go op you will be the one in a glorious location whilst half of these will be stuck in tent or in some shit uk location. Stuff that.

SuburbanRhonda · 16/06/2014 10:02

melissa, I just have to ask - what was your Masters degree in again?

Retropear · 16/06/2014 10:03

Who suggested lying?

Sorry re Disneyland in Florida or Paris I'd find many educational opportunities in both locations, many can't afford holidays in the holidays that's hardly news.....

melissa83 · 16/06/2014 10:04

I dont want to write about it on here as want to stay undercover.

SuburbanRhonda · 16/06/2014 10:06

Who suggested lying?

DroppingIn:

"If the 4 days off is before half term, when the time comes tell them he is ill. If it is after, send them an email and tell them your flight has been delayed/you had passports stolen/you all got food poisoning whatever."

SuburbanRhonda · 16/06/2014 10:07

I haven't read the thread because I know exactly what it will say.

OP, I would book it and I wouldn't think twice about it.

The3Bears · 16/06/2014 10:07

No they do not have sats in year 3 here, last year we had a letter a year in advance saying holidays would not be allowed for yr 2 as sats were taking place in may, june and july.

OP posts:
twainiac · 16/06/2014 10:08

OP, again not read much beyond page one - you must do what you think is right for your family.
Do not be a sheep because the government has decreed it - do you really think they always have the peoples best interests at heart? The only person who can decide what is best for you is you. When you look back over your life will you regret taking DS out of school for 4 days? Or will you regret not having a holiday?
It's an individual choice. Following rules blindly, without questioning them, is not necessarily a good thing.

SuburbanRhonda · 16/06/2014 10:09

Optional SATs, OP.

Many schools do them in year 3, 4 and 5, after the KS1 and KS2 SATs are over.

melissa83 · 16/06/2014 10:11

Rhonda - I have pmd you

Never, ever ask advice on flauting Gove's rules on Mumsnet, OP. Just go, if you can justify it to yourself. You don't need the approval of this lot.

It's quite sweet that so many are under Gove's spell, though; this new rule isn't for the benefit of your wunderkind. It's a money-making exercise and another way of making sure that the less rich amongst us don't get to enjoy the same privileges in life as the wealthy, who will either be able to afford holidays in schools breaks or to pay the fines.

Go. You DO have a right to a holiday, despite what this bunch of sourpusses say.
