who is unreasonable regarding the bastard cat? you decide!

The cat is a bastard. There is no cure. He just is.

He sleeps all day (when not demanding good - usually hourly). Then at night he likes to go out.

And in.

And out.

And in.

And out.

And in.

And out.

'Oh get a cat flap' I hear you cry, but the door is unsuitable and even if there was one the kitchen door is closed at night and Bastard Cat has an irrational hatred of closed doors.

So...

He's out and decides he needs to come in. So he shouts and wails loudly until someone gets up and opens a door or window.

Repeat every 2 hours.

And reverse.

I think that if the bathroom window is left open he can come and go and all I need to do is wake up enough to open the bedroom door. Then Bastard Cat can come in and snuggle my head.

H thinks that is just inviting him to shout at the bedroom door. And it should be closed.

But then I have to wake up enough to trek downstairs to let him in.

Please decide who is right.

Thanks

Bastard Cat needs drugs. Moggiedon should do it.

TitsCrossed · 14/06/2014 23:34

let me in

An oldie but goodie.

PhaedraIsMyName · 14/06/2014 23:36

Your thread has the words "cat" and "who is being unreasonable" in it. I don't even need to read it.

Of course it's you.

BerylStreep · 14/06/2014 23:36

Our cat can not only open doors by herself (she hangs off the handle), she can also turn the key in the lock, by putting her claw through the hole in the key.

She's doing it right now. I have come home from work a few times to find the back door lying wide open, and I am amazed we haven't been burgled.

BertieBotts · 14/06/2014 23:38

You need to take every door out. Then burn the doors, or the cat will find them and meow at them.

This is my favourite part of this thread Grin

steppemum · 14/06/2014 23:43

Beryl - leaving the key in the lock is making it easy for burglars, if you are out lock the door and remove the key!

enormouse · 14/06/2014 23:47

I have looked after an escape artist cat like beryls . Dps parents kitten. After being spayed she stayed with us so the other cats wouldn't nibble her stitches.

The little git would get upstairs, through 3 closed doors and into our bedroom to let us know she had demands.

This was particularly impressive as she had a cone on her head. And only 3 legs.

She also broke a kettle during her stay.

Lesshastemorespeed · 14/06/2014 23:50

Has he been 'done'?

steppemum · 14/06/2014 23:51

I know 2 cats (ours and one of my mums) who liked to sleep on the bed, but weren't allowed.

They waited until the humans in the house started to do going to bed type moves and then sneaked upstairs and hid under the bed.

then once said humans are asleep, come out and climb onto bed and snuggle down.

stealthsquiggle · 14/06/2014 23:51

I feel your pain, OP. When I was a teenager one of our cats would sit and twang the lead on the leaded window of my bedroom until I let her in - and I learned the hard way that that involved being awake enough to check if she was bringing anything in with her. If she was, and I said no, she would sit and crunch it loudly outside the window before resuming the twanging Angry

Our cats have always been shut out at least as far as the kitchen at night. Tonight, however, having had enough of washing the blood of assorted small mammals off the kitchen floor in the morning, I have shut them right out in "their" room (utility room). It is too far from anyone's bedrooms for scratching at the door to wake anyone, but I am anticipating a concerted attack on DD's 3rd floor dormer window, which is open enough to prevent suffocation/ heat stroke, but not enough for them to get in.

Seems to me you have two choices - shut BC out and buy earplugs, or leave internal doors open and give him the run of the house. Why does your bedroom door have to be shut (ours is always open because I am a fresh air freak )

e have a plug in nightlight, it is very very dim, just enough for dcs to see the way to the loo in the pitch black. You could put one in ds bedroom, or the landing, and then leave your bedroom door open.

Runesigil · 15/06/2014 01:32

Train a cat? Are you insane?

Read on another forum. A couple were delighted with their new pet cat, only prob was it scratched at the back of the sofa. The Man of the house decided to teach it not to, so every time it started to scratch the back of the sofa, he in his wisdom, put the cat outside.
For the next 16 years, every time the cat wanted to go out, it scratched the back of the sofa Grin

shockinglybadteacher · 15/06/2014 02:50

My dad's cat has trained him to let her in whenever she howls. Doesn't matter if it's 4am, he'll get up (cursing) to let her through the window or open the front door for her.

Cat doesn't even bother if I'm staying at my parents' place, my mum and me are there and my dad is out. Or if my mum's alone and my dad is out. The cat tried it on with both of us once (howling outside the window). It lasted from 1am to 7am. We didn't let her in, no matter how annoying and plaintive she sounded. She hasn't tried since.

Bastard Cat has trained you :) You'll probably have a couple of unpleasant nights with him howling at you, but give him the choice - he stays in and gets to snuggle up, or he goes outside, doesn't get let back in until you get up and makes the best of it. The only way to do that is ignore him until he stops.

Monty27 · 15/06/2014 03:57

All cats are bloody annoying. I have renamed my two; Get and Out Grin

mindthegap79 · 15/06/2014 07:13

Cat flaps in all internal doors. We have glass doors across the back and thought we couldn't have a cat flap, but DH engineered a solution. He drilled a 40cm tunnel through the cavity wall, put a cat flap on each end and lined the tunnel with cat flap extenders (compatible with cat flaps, available at pet shops). Cat 1 got the hang of the tunnel straight away, and after weeks of taping it open and us + cat 1 showing him how (and offering encouragement and support 24/7), so did cat 2.

Now they trot merrily through with all their 'thank you for our fab tunnel' presents.

dementedma · 15/06/2014 09:22

Glass door here and upstairs flat so tunnel through wall idea would result in plummet to certain death in downstairs neighbours yard.(tempted to try it)
Bastard cat twanhs the outside of the door with his claws and has shredded it. We hung a bell on the door at Christmas and he learned to stand on his back legs and ring it- which was funny but just another annoying noise in the end. We go with leaving our bedroom door open but dh snores like a warthjog which results in Ds waking up and slamming our door which startles bastard cat now asleep on our bed and makes him realise that actually he would lime to be outside after all....

HappyLashes · 15/06/2014 10:04

When DP (now DH) moved in he couldn't understand why I left my bedroom window open in order to hear my cat meow at the back door, directly below, at 1am every night when I would go down and let him in. It didn't take long before DP was the one going downstairs at 1am Grin

10 years on, new house, cat flap in back door, cat flap from kitchen to utility room, all internal doors left open and the cat I love more than anything still has DH wrapped around his little paw! He gets up with DH at 4.30am and meows until he gets meat from the fridge, insists on pushing onto DH's knee to share breakfast. Meows at the front door to be let out and immediately comes back in through the cat flap and goes straight back to the front door. Nibbles DH's armpits and ears when he's asleep.

AtYourCervix · 15/06/2014 21:10

Bastard Cat has now vanished. Not been in for tea. Git.

ApproachingATunnel · 15/06/2014 21:16

Chuck him out during the day in hope he won't find anywhere to sleep and will be tired at night?

Failing that, i dont know, perhaps a few nights of chucking him out and not letting back in (if you can stand the cries) would help?

ApproachingATunnel · 15/06/2014 21:20

I generally love cats but there is one in the neighbourhood who comes to shit under our front window or driveway (gravel). Not related, sorry but since we're talking about bastard cats...

ShatnersBassoon · 15/06/2014 21:20

Quick, move house. That'll teach the bastard.
